Prosodic Event Recognition using Convolutional Neural Networks with Context Information
This paper demonstrates the potential of convolutional neural networks (CNN)
for detecting and classifying prosodic events on words, specifically pitch
accents and phrase boundary tones, from frame-based acoustic features. Typical
approaches use not only feature representations of the word in question but
also its surrounding context. We show that adding position features indicating
the current word benefits the CNN. In addition, this paper discusses the
generalization from a speaker-dependent modelling approach to a
speaker-independent setup. The proposed method is simple and efficient and
yields strong results not only in speaker-dependent but also

A simple model for detection of rare sound events
We propose a simple recurrent model for detecting rare sound events, when the
time boundaries of events are available for training. Our model optimizes the
combination of an utterance-level loss, which classifies whether an event
occurs in an utterance, and a frame-level loss, which classifies whether each
frame corresponds to the event when it does occur. The two losses make use of a
shared vectorial representation the event, and are connected by an attention
mechanism. We demonstrate our model on Task 2 of the DCASE 2017 challenge, and

Polyphonic Sound Event Detection by using Capsule Neural Networks
Artificial sound event detection (SED) has the aim to mimic the human ability
to perceive and understand what is happening in the surroundings. Nowadays,
Deep Learning offers valuable techniques for this goal such as Convolutional
Neural Networks (CNNs). The Capsule Neural Network (CapsNet) architecture has
been recently introduced in the image processing field with the intent to
overcome some of the known limitations of CNNs, specifically regarding the
scarce robustness to affine transformations (i.e., perspective, size,
orientation) and the detection of overlapped images. This motivated the authors
to employ CapsNets to deal with the polyphonic-SED task, in which multiple
sound events occur simultaneously. Specifically, we propose to exploit the
capsule units to represent a set of distinctive properties for each individual
sound event. Capsule units are connected through a so-called "dynamic routing"
that encourages learning part-whole relationships and improves the detection
performance in a polyphonic context. This paper reports extensive evaluations
carried out on three publicly available datasets, showing how the CapsNet-based
algorithm not only outperforms standard CNNs but also allows to achieve the
best results with respect to the state of the art algorithms
Polyphonic audio tagging with sequentially labelled data using CRNN with learnable gated linear units
Audio tagging aims to detect the types of sound events occurring in an audio
recording. To tag the polyphonic audio recordings, we propose to use
Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss function on the top of
Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN) with learnable Gated Linear Units
(GLU-CTC), based on a new type of audio label data: Sequentially Labelled Data
(SLD). In GLU-CTC, CTC objective function maps the frame-level probability of
labels to clip-level probability of labels. To compare the mapping ability of
GLU-CTC for sound events, we train a CRNN with GLU based on Global Max Pooling
(GLU-GMP) and a CRNN with GLU based on Global Average Pooling (GLU-GAP). And we
also compare the proposed GLU-CTC system with the baseline system, which is a
CRNN trained using CTC loss function without GLU. The experiments show that the
GLU-CTC achieves an Area Under Curve (AUC) score of 0.882 in audio tagging,
outperforming the GLU-GMP of 0.803, GLU-GAP of 0.766 and baseline system of
0.837. That means based on the same CRNN model with GLU, the performance of CTC
mapping is better than the GMP and GAP mapping. Given both based on the CTC

Exploiting Contextual Information for Prosodic Event Detection Using Auto-Context
Prosody and prosodic boundaries carry significant information regarding linguistics and paralinguistics and are important aspects of speech. In the field of prosodic event detection, many local acoustic features have been investigated; however, contextual information has not yet been thoroughly exploited. The most difficult aspect of this lies in learning the long-distance contextual dependencies effectively and efficiently. To address this problem, we introduce the use of an algorithm called auto-context. In this algorithm, a classifier is first trained based on a set of local acoustic features, after which the generated probabilities are used along with the local features as contextual information to train new classifiers. By iteratively using updated probabilities as the contextual information, the algorithm can accurately model contextual dependencies and improve classification ability. The advantages of this method include its flexible structure and the ability of capturing contextual relationships. When using the auto-context algorithm based on support vector machine, we can improve the detection accuracy by about 3% and F-score by more than 7% on both two-way and four-way pitch accent detections in combination with the acoustic context. For boundary detection, the accuracy improvement is about 1% and the F-score improvement reaches 12%. The new algorithm outperforms conditional random fields, especially on boundary detection in terms of F-score. It also outperforms an n-gram language model on the task of pitch accent detection
Listening for Sirens: Locating and Classifying Acoustic Alarms in City Scenes
This paper is about alerting acoustic event detection and sound source
localisation in an urban scenario. Specifically, we are interested in spotting
the presence of horns, and sirens of emergency vehicles. In order to obtain a
reliable system able to operate robustly despite the presence of traffic noise,
which can be copious, unstructured and unpredictable, we propose to treat the
spectrograms of incoming stereo signals as images, and apply semantic
segmentation, based on a Unet architecture, to extract the target sound from
the background noise. In a multi-task learning scheme, together with signal
denoising, we perform acoustic event classification to identify the nature of
the alerting sound. Lastly, we use the denoised signals to localise the
acoustic source on the horizon plane, by regressing the direction of arrival of
the sound through a CNN architecture. Our experimental evaluation shows an
average classification rate of 94%, and a median absolute error on the
localisation of 7.5{\deg} when operating on audio frames of 0.5s, and of
2.5{\deg} when operating on frames of 2.5s. The system offers excellent
performance in particularly challenging scenarios, where the noise level is

Multi-View Networks For Multi-Channel Audio Classification
In this paper we introduce the idea of multi-view networks for sound
classification with multiple sensors. We show how one can build a multi-channel
sound recognition model trained on a fixed number of channels, and deploy it to
scenarios with arbitrary (and potentially dynamically changing) number of input
channels and not observe degradation in performance. We demonstrate that at
inference time you can safely provide this model all available channels as it
can ignore noisy information and leverage new information better than standard
baseline approaches. The model is evaluated in both an anechoic environment and
in rooms generated by a room acoustics simulator. We demonstrate that this
model can generalize to unseen numbers of channels as well as unseen room
