    A Hybrid Approach for Data Analytics for Internet of Things

    The vision of the Internet of Things is to allow currently unconnected physical objects to be connected to the internet. There will be an extremely large number of internet connected devices that will be much more than the number of human being in the world all producing data. These data will be collected and delivered to the cloud for processing, especially with a view of finding meaningful information to then take action. However, ideally the data needs to be analysed locally to increase privacy, give quick responses to people and to reduce use of network and storage resources. To tackle these problems, distributed data analytics can be proposed to collect and analyse the data either in the edge or fog devices. In this paper, we explore a hybrid approach which means that both innetwork level and cloud level processing should work together to build effective IoT data analytics in order to overcome their respective weaknesses and use their specific strengths. Specifically, we collected raw data locally and extracted features by applying data fusion techniques on the data on resource constrained devices to reduce the data and then send the extracted features to the cloud for processing. We evaluated the accuracy and data consumption over network and thus show that it is feasible to increase privacy and maintain accuracy while reducing data communication demands.Comment: Accepted to be published in the Proceedings of the 7th ACM International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2017

    Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age

    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications, and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees, active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and Is SLAM solved

    A Data-Driven Condition Monitoring of Product Quality Analysis System Based on RS and AHP

    Mechanical and electrical products have complex structure and intelligent control system, their reliability plays an important role in the normal operation of security facilities. However, most manufacturers usually pay more attention to the product designing and manufacturing quality, with little interest in the intelligent fault diagnosis. The objective of this study is to develop the products quality intelligent analysis and management system based on Rough Set (RS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Firstly, this paper reviews the principle of hardware, software design, monitoring platform and quality analysis system to reduce the number of information transfer with computer technology. Secondly, the fault types and feature extractions of different faults of elevators are presented and simplified by using RS theory. Then, the objective weight of level index model can be obtained by AHP method, and the comprehensive analysis weight of each index is obtained by using the value of subjective and objective weight coefficients with the golden ratio. Finally, a comprehensive decision weight of the major index for quality control analysis system of many vertical elevators is presented. The results show that the data-driven condition monitoring and quality analysis system is a kind of important means to prevent a disaster of complex mechanical and electrical products

    An optimal clustering algorithm based distance-aware routing protocol for wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensors Networks (WSN) consist of low power devices that are deployed at different geographical isolated areas to monitor physical event. Sensors are arranged in clusters. Each cluster assigns a specific and vital node which is known as a cluster head (CH). Each CH collects the useful information from its sensor member to be transmitted to a sink or Base Station (BS). Sensor have implemented with limited batteries (1.5V) that cannot have replaced. To resolve this issue and improve network stability, the proposed scheme adjust the transmission range between CHs and their members. The proposed approach is evaluated via simulation experiments and compared with some references existing algorithms. Our protocol seemed improved performance in terms of extended lifetime and achieved more than 35% improvements in terms of energy consumptio

    Indoor location based services challenges, requirements and usability of current solutions

    Indoor Location Based Services (LBS), such as indoor navigation and tracking, still have to deal with both technical and non-technical challenges. For this reason, they have not yet found a prominent position in people’s everyday lives. Reliability and availability of indoor positioning technologies, the availability of up-to-date indoor maps, and privacy concerns associated with location data are some of the biggest challenges to their development. If these challenges were solved, or at least minimized, there would be more penetration into the user market. This paper studies the requirements of LBS applications, through a survey conducted by the authors, identifies the current challenges of indoor LBS, and reviews the available solutions that address the most important challenge, that of providing seamless indoor/outdoor positioning. The paper also looks at the potential of emerging solutions and the technologies that may help to handle this challenge
