Channel assignment and routing in cooperative and competitive wireless mesh networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Docter of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.In this thesis, the channel assignment and routing problems have been investigated for both cooperative and competitive Wireless Mesh networks (WMNs). A dynamic and distributed channel assignment scheme has been proposed which generates the network topologies ensuring less interference and better connectivity. The proposed channel assignment scheme is capable of detecting the node failures and mobility in an efficient manner. The channel monitoring module precisely records the quality of bi-directional links in terms of link delays. In addition, a Quality of Service based Multi-Radio Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector (QMR-AODV) routing protocol has been devised. QMR-AODV is multi-radio compatible and provides delay guarantees on end-to-end paths. The inherited problem of AODV’s network wide flooding has been solved by selectively forwarding the routing queries on specified interfaces. The QoS based delay routing metric, combined with the selective route request forwarding, reduces the routing overhead from 24% up to 36% and produces 40.4% to 55.89% less network delays for traffic profiles of 10 to 60 flows, respectively. A distributed channel assignment scheme has been proposed for competitive WMNs, where the problem has been investigated by applying the concepts from non-cooperative bargaining Game Theory in two stages. In the first stage of the game, individual nodes of the non-cooperative setup is considered as the unit of analysis, where sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of Nash Equilibrium (NE) and Negotiation-Proof Nash Equilibrium (N-PNE) have been derived. A distributed algorithm has been presented with perfect information available to the nodes of the network. In the presence of perfect information, each node has the knowledge of interference experience by the channels in its collision domain. The game converges to N-PNE in finite time and the average fairness achieved by all the nodes is greater than 0.79 (79%) as measured through Jain Fairness Index. Since N-PNE and NE are not always a system optimal solutions when considered from the end-nodes prospective, the model is further extended to incorporate non-cooperative end-users bargaining between two end user’s Mesh Access Points (MAPs), where an increase of 10% to 27% in end-to-end throughput is achieved. Furthermore, a non-cooperative game theoretical model is proposed for end-users flow routing in a multi-radio multi-channel WMNs. The end user nodes are selfish and compete for the channel resources across the WMNs backbone, aiming to maximize their own benefit without taking care for the overall system optimization. The end-to-end throughputs achieved by the flows of an end node and interference experienced across the WMNs backbone are considered as the performance parameters in the utility function. Theoretical foundation has been drawn based on the concepts from the Game Theory and necessary conditions for the existence of NE have been extensively derived. A distributed algorithm running on each end node with imperfect information has been implemented to assess the usefulness of the proposed mechanism. The analytical results have proven that a pure strategy Nash Equilibrium exists with the proposed necessary conditions in a game of imperfect information. Based on a distributed algorithm, the game converges to a stable state in finite time. The proposed game theoretical model provides a more reasonable solution with a standard deviation of 2.19Mbps as compared to 3.74Mbps of the random flow routing. Applications of Repeated Games in Wireless Networks: A Survey
A repeated game is an effective tool to model interactions and conflicts for
players aiming to achieve their objectives in a long-term basis. Contrary to
static noncooperative games that model an interaction among players in only one
period, in repeated games, interactions of players repeat for multiple periods;
and thus the players become aware of other players' past behaviors and their
future benefits, and will adapt their behavior accordingly. In wireless
networks, conflicts among wireless nodes can lead to selfish behaviors,
resulting in poor network performances and detrimental individual payoffs. In
this paper, we survey the applications of repeated games in different wireless
networks. The main goal is to demonstrate the use of repeated games to
encourage wireless nodes to cooperate, thereby improving network performances
and avoiding network disruption due to selfish behaviors. Furthermore, various
problems in wireless networks and variations of repeated game models together
with the corresponding solutions are discussed in this survey. Finally, we

The Spectrum Shortage Problem: Channel Assignment and Cognitive Networks
Recent studies have shown that the proliferation of wireless applications and services, experienced in the last decade, is leading to the challenging spectrum shortage problem.
We provide a general overview regarding the spectrum shortage problem from the point of view of different technologies.
First, we propose solutions based on multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks in order to improve the usage of unlicensed wireless resources.
Then, we move our focus on cognitive networks in order to analyze issues and solutions to opportunistically use licensed wireless resources.
In wireless mesh networks, the spectrum shortage problem is addressed equipping each device with multiple radios which are turned on different orthogonal channels.
We propose G-PaMeLA, which splits in local sub-problems the joint channel assignment and routing problem in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks.
Results demonstrate that G-PaMeLA significantly improves network performance, in terms of packet loss and throughput fairness compared to algorithms in the literature.
Unfortunately, even if orthogonal channels are used, wireless mesh networks result in what is called spectrum overcrowding.
In order to address the spectrum overcrowding problem, careful analysis on spectrum frequencies has been conducted.
These studies identified the possibility of transmitting on licensed channels, which are surprisingly underutilized.
With the aim of addressing the resources problem using licensed channels, cognitive access and mesh networks have been developed.
In cognitive access networks, we identify as the major problem the self-coexistence, which is the ability to access channels on a non-interfering basis with respect to licensed and unlicensed wireless devices.
We propose two game theoretic frameworks which differentiate in having non-cooperative (NoRa) and cooperative (HeCtor) cognitive devices, respectively.
Results show that HeCtor achieves higher throughput than NoRa but at the cost of higher computational complexity, which leads to a smaller throughput in cases where rapid changes occur in channels' occupancy.
In contrast, NoRa attains the same throughput independent of the variability in channels' occupancy, hence cognitive devices adapt faster to such changes.
In cognitive mesh networks, we analyze the coordination problem among cognitive devices because it is the major concern in implementing mesh networks in environments which change in time and space.
We propose Connor, a clustering algorithm to address the coordination problem, which establishes common local control channels.
Connor, in contrast with existing algorithms in the literature, does not require synchronization among cognitive mesh devices and allows a fast re-clustering when changes occur in channel's occupancy by licensed users.
Results show that Connor performs better than existing algorithms in term of number of channels used for control purposes and time to reach and stay on stable configurations
Adaptive resource allocation for cognitive wireless ad hoc networks
Widespread use of resource constrained wireless ad hoc networks requires careful management of the network resources in order to maximize the utilization. In cognitive wireless networks, resources such as spectrum, energy, communication links/paths, time, space, modulation scheme, have to be managed to maintain quality of service (QoS). Therefore in the first paper, a distributed dynamic channel allocation scheme is proposed for multi-channel wireless ad hoc networks with single-radio nodes. The proposed learning scheme adapts the probabilities of selecting each channel as a function of the error in the performance index at each step.
Due to frequent changes in topology and flow traffic over time, wireless ad hoc networks require a dynamic routing protocol that adapts to the changes of the network while allocating network resources. In the second paper, approximate dynamic programming (ADP) techniques are utilized to find dynamic routes, while solving discrete-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation forward-in-time for route cost. The third paper extends the dynamic routing to multi-channel multi-interface networks which are affected by channel uncertainties and fading channels. By the addition of optimization techniques through load balancing over multiple paths and multiple wireless channels, utilization of wireless channels throughout the network is enhanced.
Next in the fourth paper, a decentralized game theoretic approach for resource allocation of the primary and secondary users in a cognitive radio networks is proposed. The priorities of the networks are incorporated in the utility and potential functions which are in turn used for resource allocation. Basics of coalitional games with applications to communications and networking
Game theory is the study of decision making in an interactive environment. Coalitional games fulfill the promise of group efficient solutions to problems involving strategic actions. Formulation of optimal player behavior is a fundamental element in this theory. This paper comprises a self-instructive didactic means to study basics of coalitional games indicating how coalitional game theory tools can provide a framework to tackle different problems in communications and networking. We show that coalitional game approaches achieve an improved performance compare to non-cooperative game theoretical solutions
A Game Theory based Contention Window Adjustment for IEEE 802.11 under Heavy Load
The 802.11 families are considered as the most applicable set of standards for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) where nodes make access to the wireless media using random access techniques. In such networks, each node adjusts its contention window to the minimum size irrespective of the number of competing nodes, so in saturated mode and excessive number of nodes available, the network performance is reduced due to severe collision probability. A cooperative game is being proposed to adjust the users’ contention windows in improving the network throughput, delay and packet drop ratio under heavy traffic load circumstances. The system’s performance evaluated by simulations indicate some superiorities of the proposed method over 802.11-DCF (Distribute Coordinate Function)
Resource allocation in networks via coalitional games
The main goal of this dissertation is to manage resource allocation in network
engineering problems and to introduce efficient cooperative algorithms to obtain high performance, ensuring fairness and stability. Specifically, this dissertation introduces
new approaches for resource allocation in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) wireless networks and in smart power grids by casting the problems to the coalitional game framework and by providing a constructive iterative algorithm based on dynamic learning theory.

Fair relay selection in wireless rural networks using game theory
Access to Internet is the key to facilitate the economic growth and development of the rural communities and to bridge the digital-divide between the urban and rural population. The traditional broadband access technologies are not always suitable for the rural areas due to their difficult topography and sparsely populated communities. Specialized relay stations can be deployed to extend the coverage of a wireless rural network but they come with an inherited increase in the infrastructural cost. An alternative is to utilize the in-range users as relays to enhance the coverage range of the wireless rural network.
In this thesis, the in-range ordinary users termed as primary users (PUs) are used to act as relays for the out-of-range users called the secondary users (SUs). Two relay selection solutions, the Fair Battery Power Consumption (FBPC) algorithm and the Credit based Fair Relay Selection (CF-RS) protocol have been proposed with the aim of providing fair chance to every PU to assist the SUs, thus resulting in fair utilization of battery power of all relays along with the coverage extension. The FBPC algorithm uses the concept of proportional fairness as the relay selection criterion. However, if only proportionally fair consumption of battery power is taken as the relay selection parameter, the FBPC algorithm may result in selecting relays with poor channel conditions. The rural network may also consist of selfish PUs which need to be incentivized to use their resources for the SUs. The CF-RS protocol is developed which takes into account both the achievable data rate and consumption of battery power for selection of a relay. The CF-RS protocol is formulated using Stackelberg game which employs a credit-based incentive mechanism to motivate the self-interested PUs to help the SUs by providing instantaneous as well as long term benefit to the PUs.
A basic network model consisting of PUs and SUs has been simulated and the performance of the FBPC algorithm and the CF-RS protocol have been evaluated in terms of data rate and utility achievable at the SUs, dissipation of battery power of the PUs and Jain’s fairness index to determine fairness in utilization of battery power. The results obtained show that the FBPC algorithm achieves approximately 100% fairness for utilization of battery power of relays but compromises the data rate attainable by the SUs. Thus the FBPC algorithm shall be viewed as a trade-off between the fair battery power dissipation of relays and the data rate achievable by the SUs. Whereas, the CF-RS protocol provides 55% better utility and longer service time to the SUs without harming the attainable data rate and achieves 80% fairness. When the CF-RS protocol is used for relay selection, it is advantageous even for the self-interested users to participate in the relaying process to earn some benefit to utilize it when needed to buy assistance from other users
