Multi-perspective neural architecture for recommendation system
Abstract(#br)Currently, there starts a research trend to leverage neural architecture for recommendation systems. Though several deep recommender models are proposed, most methods are too simple to characterize users’ complex preference. In this paper, for a fine-grained analysis, users’ ratings are explained from multiple perspectives, based on which, we propose our neural architectures. Specifically, our model employs several sequential stages to encode the user and item into hidden representations. In one stage, the user and item are represented from multiple perspectives and in each perspective, the representation of user and that of item put attentions to each other. Last, we metric the output representations from the final stage to approach the users’ ratings. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves substantial improvements against baselines
Sequential Recommendation with Self-Attentive Multi-Adversarial Network
Recently, deep learning has made significant progress in the task of
sequential recommendation. Existing neural sequential recommenders typically
adopt a generative way trained with Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). When
context information (called factor) is involved, it is difficult to analyze
when and how each individual factor would affect the final recommendation
performance. For this purpose, we take a new perspective and introduce
adversarial learning to sequential recommendation. In this paper, we present a
Multi-Factor Generative Adversarial Network (MFGAN) for explicitly modeling the
effect of context information on sequential recommendation. Specifically, our
proposed MFGAN has two kinds of modules: a Transformer-based generator taking
user behavior sequences as input to recommend the possible next items, and
multiple factor-specific discriminators to evaluate the generated sub-sequence
from the perspectives of different factors. To learn the parameters, we adopt
the classic policy gradient method, and utilize the reward signal of
discriminators for guiding the learning of the generator. Our framework is
flexible to incorporate multiple kinds of factor information, and is able to
trace how each factor contributes to the recommendation decision over time.
Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world datasets demonstrate the
superiority of our proposed model over the state-of-the-art methods, in terms
of effectiveness and interpretability
Latent Relational Metric Learning via Memory-based Attention for Collaborative Ranking
This paper proposes a new neural architecture for collaborative ranking with
implicit feedback. Our model, LRML (\textit{Latent Relational Metric Learning})
is a novel metric learning approach for recommendation. More specifically,
instead of simple push-pull mechanisms between user and item pairs, we propose
to learn latent relations that describe each user item interaction. This helps
to alleviate the potential geometric inflexibility of existing metric learing
approaches. This enables not only better performance but also a greater extent
of modeling capability, allowing our model to scale to a larger number of
interactions. In order to do so, we employ a augmented memory module and learn
to attend over these memory blocks to construct latent relations. The
memory-based attention module is controlled by the user-item interaction,
making the learned relation vector specific to each user-item pair. Hence, this
can be interpreted as learning an exclusive and optimal relational translation
for each user-item interaction. The proposed architecture demonstrates the
state-of-the-art performance across multiple recommendation benchmarks. LRML
outperforms other metric learning models by in terms of Hits@10 and
nDCG@10 on large datasets such as Netflix and MovieLens20M. Moreover,
qualitative studies also demonstrate evidence that our proposed model is able
to infer and encode explicit sentiment, temporal and attribute information
despite being only trained on implicit feedback. As such, this ascertains the
ability of LRML to uncover hidden relational structure within implicit

Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives
With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have
been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility
of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in
many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many
problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered
considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and
natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the
attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The
influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its
effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems
research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is
flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent
research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely,
we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models,
along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Finally,
we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new

Context-Aware Systems for Sequential Item Recommendation
Quizlet is the most popular online learning tool in the United States, and is
used by over 2/3 of high school students, and 1/2 of college students. With
more than 95% of Quizlet users reporting improved grades as a result, the
platform has become the de-facto tool used in millions of classrooms. In this
paper, we explore the task of recommending suitable content for a student to
study, given their prior interests, as well as what their peers are studying.
We propose a novel approach, i.e. Neural Educational Recommendation Engine
(NERE), to recommend educational content by leveraging student behaviors rather
than ratings. We have found that this approach better captures social factors
that are more aligned with learning. NERE is based on a recurrent neural
network that includes collaborative and content-based approaches for
recommendation, and takes into account any particular student's speed, mastery,
and experience to recommend the appropriate task. We train NERE by jointly
learning the user embeddings and content embeddings, and attempt to predict the
content embedding for the final timestamp. We also develop a confidence
estimator for our neural network, which is a crucial requirement for
productionizing this model. We apply NERE to Quizlet's proprietary dataset, and
present our results. We achieved an R^2 score of 0.81 in the content embedding
space, and a recall score of 54% on our 100 nearest neighbors. This vastly
exceeds the recall@100 score of 12% that a standard matrix-factorization
approach provides. We conclude with a discussion on how NERE will be deployed,
and position our work as one of the first educational recommender systems for
the K-12 space
Telepath: Understanding Users from a Human Vision Perspective in Large-Scale Recommender Systems
Designing an e-commerce recommender system that serves hundreds of millions
of active users is a daunting challenge. From a human vision perspective,
there're two key factors that affect users' behaviors: items' attractiveness
and their matching degree with users' interests. This paper proposes Telepath,
a vision-based bionic recommender system model, which understands users from
such perspective. Telepath is a combination of a convolutional neural network
(CNN), a recurrent neural network (RNN) and deep neural networks (DNNs). Its
CNN subnetwork simulates the human vision system to extract key visual signals
of items' attractiveness and generate corresponding activations. Its RNN and
DNN subnetworks simulate cerebral cortex to understand users' interest based on
the activations generated from browsed items. In practice, the Telepath model
has been launched to JD's recommender system and advertising system. For one of
the major item recommendation blocks on the JD app, click-through rate (CTR),
gross merchandise value (GMV) and orders have increased 1.59%, 8.16% and 8.71%
respectively. For several major ads publishers of JD demand-side platform, CTR,
GMV and return on investment have increased 6.58%, 61.72% and 65.57%
respectively by the first launch, and further increased 2.95%, 41.75% and
