Ontological Matchmaking in Recommender Systems
The electronic marketplace offers great potential for the recommendation of
supplies. In the so called recommender systems, it is crucial to apply
matchmaking strategies that faithfully satisfy the predicates specified in the
demand, and take into account as much as possible the user preferences. We
focus on real-life ontology-driven matchmaking scenarios and identify a number
of challenges, being inspired by such scenarios. A key challenge is that of
presenting the results to the users in an understandable and clear-cut fashion
in order to facilitate the analysis of the results. Indeed, such scenarios
evoke the opportunity to rank and group the results according to specific
criteria. A further challenge consists of presenting the results to the user in
an asynchronous fashion, i.e. the 'push' mode, along with the 'pull' mode, in
which the user explicitly issues a query, and displays the results. Moreover,
an important issue to consider in real-life cases is the possibility of
submitting a query to multiple providers, and collecting the various results.
We have designed and implemented an ontology-based matchmaking system that
suitably addresses the above challenges. We have conducted a comprehensive
experimental study, in order to investigate the usability of the system, the
performance and the effectiveness of the matchmaking strategies with real

Models of Interaction as a Grounding for Peer to Peer Knowledge Sharing
Most current attempts to achieve reliable knowledge sharing on a large scale have relied on pre-engineering of content and supply services. This, like traditional knowledge engineering, does not by itself scale to large, open, peer to peer systems because the cost of being precise about the absolute semantics of services and their knowledge rises rapidly as more services participate. We describe how to break out of this deadlock by focusing on semantics related to interaction and using this to avoid dependency on a priori semantic agreement; instead making semantic commitments incrementally at run time. Our method is based on interaction models that are mobile in the sense that they may be transferred to other components, this being a mechanism for service composition and for coalition formation. By shifting the emphasis to interaction (the details of which may be hidden from users) we can obtain knowledge sharing of sufficient quality for sustainable communities of practice without the barrier of complex meta-data provision prior to community formation
Business Process Retrieval Based on Behavioral Semantics
This paper develops a framework for retrieving business processes considering search requirements based on behavioral semantics properties; it presents a framework called "BeMantics" for retrieving business processes based on structural, linguistics, and behavioral semantics properties. The relevance of the framework is evaluated retrieving business processes from a repository, and collecting a set of relevant business processes manually issued by human judges. The "BeMantics" framework scored high precision values (0.717) but low recall values (0.558), which implies that even when the framework avoided false negatives, it prone to false positives. The highest pre- cision value was scored in the linguistic criterion showing that using semantic inference in the tasks comparison allowed to reduce around 23.6 % the number of false positives. Using semantic inference to compare tasks of business processes can improve the precision; but if the ontologies are from narrow and specific domains, they limit the semantic expressiveness obtained with ontologies from more general domains. Approaches to Semantic Web Services: An Overview and Comparison
Abstract. The next Web generation promises to deliver Semantic Web Services (SWS); services that are self-described and amenable to automated discovery, composition and invocation. A prerequisite to this, however, is the emergence and evolution of the Semantic Web, which provides the infrastructure for the semantic interoperability of Web Services. Web Services will be augmented with rich formal descriptions of their capabilities, such that they can be utilized by applications or other services without human assistance or highly constrained agreements on interfaces or protocols. Thus, Semantic Web Services have the potential to change the way knowledge and business services are consumed and provided on the Web. In this paper, we survey the state of the art of current enabling technologies for Semantic Web Services. In addition, we characterize the infrastructure of Semantic Web Services along three orthogonal dimensions: activities, architecture and service ontology. Further, we examine and contrast three current approaches to SWS according to the proposed dimensions

Semantic Matchmaking as Non-Monotonic Reasoning: A Description Logic Approach
Matchmaking arises when supply and demand meet in an electronic marketplace,
or when agents search for a web service to perform some task, or even when
recruiting agencies match curricula and job profiles. In such open
environments, the objective of a matchmaking process is to discover best
available offers to a given request. We address the problem of matchmaking from
a knowledge representation perspective, with a formalization based on
Description Logics. We devise Concept Abduction and Concept Contraction as
non-monotonic inferences in Description Logics suitable for modeling
matchmaking in a logical framework, and prove some related complexity results.
We also present reasonable algorithms for semantic matchmaking based on the
devised inferences, and prove that they obey to some commonsense properties.
Finally, we report on the implementation of the proposed matchmaking framework,
which has been used both as a mediator in e-marketplaces and for semantic web
services discovery
