    Probabilistic three-dimensional object tracking based on adaptive depth segmentation

    Object tracking is one of the fundamental topics of computer vision with diverse applications. The arising challenges in tracking, i.e., cluttered scenes, occlusion, complex motion, and illumination variations have motivated utilization of depth information from 3D sensors. However, current 3D trackers are not applicable to unconstrained environments without a priori knowledge. As an important object detection module in tracking, segmentation subdivides an image into its constituent regions. Nevertheless, the existing range segmentation methods in literature are difficult to implement in real-time due to their slow performance. In this thesis, a 3D object tracking method based on adaptive depth segmentation and particle filtering is presented. In this approach, the segmentation method as the bottom-up process is combined with the particle filter as the top-down process to achieve efficient tracking results under challenging circumstances. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency, as well as robustness of the tracking algorithm utilizing real-world range information

Despite the fact that all methods may be derived from a “natural” dynamical model within a unified framework, from an engineering perspective there are a number of trade-offs that lead to different strategies depending upon the applications and the goals one is targeting. We want to characterize and compare the properties of each model such that the engineer may choose the one best suited to the specific application. We analyze the properties of filters derived from each dynamical model under a variety of experimental conditions, assess the accuracy of the estimates, their robustness to measurement noise, sensitivity to initial conditions and visual angle, effects of the bas-relief ambiguity and occlusions, dependence upon the number of image measurements and their sampling rate

    Optical Flow Constraints on Deformable Models With Applications to Face Tracking

    Optical flow provides a constraint on the motion of a deformable model. We derive and solve a dynamic system incorporating flow as a hard constraint, producing a model-based least-squares optical flow solution. Our solution also ensures the constraint remains satisfied when combined with edge information, which helps combat tracking error accumulation. Constraint enforcement can be relaxed using a Kalman filter, which permits controlled constraint violations based on the noise present in the optical flow information, and enables optical flow and edge information to be combined more robustly and efficiently. We apply this framework to the estimation of face shape and motion using a 3D deformable face model. This model uses a small number of parameters to describe a rich variety of face shapes and facial expressions. We present experiments in extracting the shape and motion of a face from image sequences which validate the accuracy of the method. They also demonstrate that our treatment of optical flow as a hard constraint, as well as our use of a Kalman filter to reconcile these constraints with the uncertainty in the optical flow, are vital for improving the performance of our system

    Review and classification of vision-based localisation techniques in unknown environments

    International audienceThis study presents a review of the state-of-the-art and a novel classification of current vision-based localisation techniques in unknown environments. Indeed, because of progresses made in computer vision, it is now possible to consider vision-based systems as promising navigation means that can complement traditional navigation sensors like global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) and inertial navigation systems. This study aims to review techniques employing a camera as a localisation sensor, provide a classification of techniques and introduce schemes that exploit the use of video information within a multi-sensor system. In fact, a general model is needed to better compare existing techniques in order to decide which approach is appropriate and which are the innovation axes. In addition, existing classifications only consider techniques based on vision as a standalone tool and do not consider video as a sensor among others. The focus is addressed to scenarios where no a priori knowledge of the environment is provided. In fact, these scenarios are the most challenging since the system has to cope with objects as they appear in the scene without any prior information about their expected position

    3D multi-object tracking (3D MOT) stands as a pivotal domain within autonomous driving, experiencing a surge in scholarly interest and commercial promise over recent years. Despite its paramount significance, 3D MOT confronts a myriad of formidable challenges, encompassing abrupt alterations in object appearances, pervasive occlusion, the presence of diminutive targets, data sparsity, missed detections, and the unpredictable initiation and termination of object motion trajectories. Countless methodologies have emerged to grapple with these issues, yet 3D MOT endures as a formidable problem that warrants further exploration. This paper undertakes a comprehensive examination, assessment, and synthesis of the research landscape in this domain, remaining attuned to the latest developments in 3D MOT while suggesting prospective avenues for future investigation. Our exploration commences with a systematic exposition of key facets of 3D MOT and its associated domains, including problem delineation, classification, methodological approaches, fundamental principles, and empirical investigations. Subsequently, we categorize these methodologies into distinct groups, dissecting each group meticulously with regard to its challenges, underlying rationale, progress, merits, and demerits. Furthermore, we present a concise recapitulation of experimental metrics and offer an overview of prevalent datasets, facilitating a quantitative comparison for a more intuitive assessment. Lastly, our deliberations culminate in a discussion of the prevailing research landscape, highlighting extant challenges and charting possible directions for 3D MOT research.     3D Tracking Using Multi-view Based Particle Filters

    Visual surveillance and monitoring of indoor environments using multiple cameras has become a field of great activity in computer vision. Usual 3D tracking and positioning systems rely on several independent 2D tracking modules applied over individual camera streams, fused using geometrical relationships across cameras. As 2D tracking systems suffer inherent difficulties due to point of view limitations (perceptually similar foreground and background regions causing fragmentation of moving objects, occlusions), 3D tracking based on partially erroneous 2D tracks are likely to fail when handling multiple-people interaction. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a Bayesian framework for combining 2D low-level cues from multiple cameras directly into the 3D world through 3D Particle Filters. This method allows to estimate the probability of a certain volume being occupied by a moving object, and thus to segment and track multiple people across the monitored area. The proposed method is developed on the basis of simple, binary 2D moving region segmentation on each camera, considered as different state observations. In addition, the method is proved well suited for integrating additional 2D low-level cues to increase system robustness to occlusions: in this line, a naïve color-based (HSI) appearance model has been integrated, resulting in clear performance improvements when dealing with complex scenarios
