Fifth generation (5G) wireless system is expected to enable new device-to-device (D2D) and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications that will impact both consumers and industry. Moreover, for efficient M2M communication, both one dimensional (1-D) and two dimensional (2-D) beam switching is highly needed for high data-rate wireless radio links. A planar array with 2-D beam switching capabilities is highly desirable in 5G system. This thesis proposes a new technique of achieving simple and cost effective 2-D beam switching array antenna at 28 GHz for 5G wireless system. The technique involves lateral cascading of Butler matrix (BM) beamforming network (BFN). However, designing a planar BM at 28 GHz that will allow K-connector is not a trivial issue because the distances between the ports are X/4 electrical length apart. Nevertheless, two branch line coupler (BLC) with unequal ports separation at 28 GHz on a single substrate are designed and applied to design 1-D switched beam antennas based on BLC and 4 * 4 BM. Then two of these antennas are laterally cascaded to achieve 2-D beam switching antenna. This novel concept is the basis for choosing BM BFN in the design. The proposed 1-D array antennas on BLC and BM have wide measured impedance bandwidth of 18.9% (5.3 GHz) and 21.7% (6.1 GHz) and highest gain of 14.6 dBi and 15.9 dBi, respectively. The 2-D switched beam antenna on cascaded BLC has highest realized gain of 14.9 dB, radiation efficiency of 86%, 86.8%, 85.5%, and 83.4% at ports 1 to 4, respectively. The switching range of from -25o to +18° in the x-z plane and from -18o to 24o in the y-z plane, while the 2-D switched beam antenna based on cascaded 4 * 4 BM has switching range of -41o to 43o in the x-z plane and -43o to 42o in the y-z plane with highest realized gain of 14.4 dBi. The proposed antennas have great potentials for 5G wireless communication system applications

The tremendous growth in Wireless Communications System has greatly increased the need to improve the accuracy of predicting signal propagation. It is important to have a tool that can be used to predict the signal coverage area, a method to determine the path loss in microcells, the attenuation due to different partitions and the effect of the environments. To understand radio propagation characteristics in buildings for Personal Communication Systems (PCSs), a comprehensive measurement was carried out in a shopping and business complex, The Mall, in Kuala Lumpur. Two types of Base Station (BS) antennas, Omni-directional and Panel antenna, were mounted on the ceiling and wall respectively. The Mobile Station (MS) uses an antenna with 3dB gain, height 0.5 m and 1.2 m respectively, at 935 MHz carrier frequency. Many test settings were chosen in the office, on the floor sharing with the atrium, lower ground floor and car park, with Line-of-Sight (LOS) and without LOS. The results show some variations of signal strengths with distance that have distinct near and far field regions. The buildings where the measurements were carried out typically have walls and columns constructed from concrete blocks. Within the building the time spread of arriving radio signals depends on reflections and scattering from the structure of the buildings. The results of these measurements are presented and discussed in order to investigate penetration losses in walls, soft boards and floors. The results showed that shadowing due to the objects has a greater influence on the signal strength than the distance between the transmitting and receiving antenna. The path loss within a building is linearly dependent on the logarithm of the distance, on the number of obstacles blocking the signal, on the number of walls between transmitter and receiver antenna, and on the number of floors vertically between the transmitter and receiver antennas. Another important factor is the type of the environment it is operating in, which is given as the factor n. Comparisons between predicted and measured results have shown that the model is capable of predicting the attenuation within the building for different environment

The wireless frequency spectrum is a very valuable resource in the field of communications. Over the years, different bands of the spectrum were licensed to various communications systems and standards. As a result, most of the easily accessible parts of it ended up being theoretically occupied. This made it somewhat difficult to accommodate new wireless technologies, especially with the rise of communications concepts such as the Machine to Machine (M2M) communications and the Internet of Things (IoT). It was necessary to find ways to make better use of wireless spectrum. Cognitive Radio is one concept that came into the light to tackle the problem of spectrum utilization. Various technical reports stated that the spectrum is in fact under-utilized. Many frequency bands are not heavily used over time, and some bands have low activity. Cognitive Radio (CR) Networks aim to exploit and opportunistically share the already licensed spectrum. The objective is to enable various kinds of communications while preserving the licensed parties' right to access the spectrum without interference. Cognitive radio networks have more than one approach to spectrum sharing. In interweave spectrum sharing scheme, cognitive radio devices look for opportunities in the spectrum, in frequency and over time. Therefore, and to find these opportunities, they employ what is known as spectrum sensing. In a spectrum sensing phase, the CR device scans certain parts of the spectrum to find the voids or white spaces in it. After that it exploits these voids to perform its data transmission, thus avoiding any interference with the licensed users. Spectrum sensing has various classifications and approaches. In this thesis, we will present a general review of the main spectrum sensing categories. Furthermore, we will discuss some of the techniques employed in each category including their respective advantages and disadvantages, in addition to some of the research work associated with them. Our focus will be on cooperative spectrum sensing, which is a popular research topic. In cooperative spectrum sensing, multiple CR devices collaborate in the spectrum sensing operation to enhance the performance in terms of detection accuracy. We will investigate the soft-information decision fusion approach in cooperative sensing. In this approach, the CR devices forward their spectrum sensing data to a central node, commonly known as a Fusion Center. At the fusion center, this data is combined to achieve a higher level of accuracy in determining the occupied parts and the empty parts of the spectrum while considering Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, we will address the issue of high power consumption due to the sampling process of a wide-band of frequencies at the Nyquist rate. We will apply the 1-bit Quantization technique in our work to tackle this issue. The simulation results show that the detection accuracy of a 1-bit quantized system is equivalent to a non-quantized system with only 2 dB less in Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Finally, we will shed some light on multiple antenna spectrum sensing, and compare its performance to the cooperative sensing

Without measurements, sustainable development effort can not progress in the right direction. Wireless sensor networks are vital for monitoring in real time and making accurate measurements for such an endeavor. However small energy storage in the sensors can become a bottleneck if the wireless sensor network is not optimized at the hardware and software level. Directional antennas are such optimization technologies at the hardware level. They have advantages over the omnidirectional antennas, such as high gain, less interference, longer transmission range, and less power consumption. In wireless sensor networks, most of the energy is consumed for communication. Considering the limited energy in small scale batteries of the sensors, energy efficient (aware) routing, is one of the most important software optimization techniques. The main goal of the technique is to improve the lifetime of the wireless sensor networks. In the light of these observations, it is desirable to do a coupled design of directional antennas with network software, for fully exploiting the advantages offered by directional antenna technology. In this thesis, the possibilities of doing such integrated design are surveyed and improvements are suggested. The design of the proposed microstrip patch antenna array is discussed and the performance characteristics are assessed through simulations. In the benchmarks, the proposed routing method showed improvements in energy usage compared to the existing approaches.Ölçümler olmadan sürdürülebilir kalkınma çabaları doğru yönde ilerleyemez. In present era, cellular communication plays a vital role for communicating over long distance. The number of mobile subscribers is increasing tremendously day by day. 3GPP LTE is the evolution of the UMTS in response to ever-increasing demands for high quality multimedia services according to users\u27 expectations. The average data consumption exceeds hundreds of Megabytes per subscriber per month. To introduce, summarize and get acquainted with this new technology LTE is one of the main objectives of my thesis. The Downlink is always considered an important factor in terms of coverage and capacity aspects in between Downlink and Uplink factors for cellular communication. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) are the new technologies which enhance the performance of the traditional wireless communication experience for downlink. In this thesis, we considered the downlink system for channel estimation by using different algorithms and interpolation methods. Channel Estimation algorithms such as Least Squares Estimation (LSE) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) have been evaluated for different channel models. The interpolation method used in algorithms is Linear, Piecewise constant, Averaged and Pilot averaged. I measured the performance of these algorithms in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Symbol Error Rate (SER). The results are presented to illustrate the salient concept of the LTE communication system

A Localization System for Optimizing the Deployment of Small Cells in 2-Tier Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Due to the ever growing population of mobile device users and expansion on the number of devices and applications requiring data usage, there is an increasing demand for improved capacity in wireless cellular networks. Cell densification and 2-tier heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are two solutions which will assist 5G systems in meeting these growing capacity demands. Small-cell deployment over existing heterogeneous networks have been considered by researchers. Different strategies for deploying these small-cells within the existing network among which are random, cell-edge and high user concentration (HUC) have also been explored. Small cells deployed on locations of HUC offloads traffic from existing network infrastructure, ensure good Quality of Service (QoS) and balanced load in the network but there is a challenge of identifying HUC locations. There has been considerable research performed into techniques for determining user location and cell deployment. Currently localization can be achieved using time dependent methods such as Time of Arrival (ToA), Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA), or Global Positioning Systems (GPS). GPS based solutions provide high accuracy user positioning but suffer from concerns over user privacy, and other time dependent approaches require regular synchronization which can be difficult to achieve in practice. Alternatively, Received Signal Strength (RSS) based solutions can provide simple anonymous user data, requiring no extra hardware within the mobile handset but often rely on triangulation from adjacent Base Stations (BS). In mobile cellular networks such solutions are therefore often only applicable near the cell edge, as installing additional BS would increase the complexity and cost of a network deployment. The work presented in this thesis overcomes these limitations by providing an observer system for wireless networks that can be used to periodically monitor the cell coverage area and identify regions of high concentrations of users for possible small cell deployment in 2-tier heterogeneous networks. The observer system comprises of two collinear antennas separated by λ/2. The relative phase of each antenna was varied using a phase shifter so that the combined output of the two antennas were used to create sum and difference radiation patterns, and to steer the antenna radiation pattern creating different azimuth positions for AoA estimation. Statistical regression analysis was used to develop range estimation models based on four different environment empirical pathloss models for user range estimation. Users were located into clusters by classifying them into azimuth-range classes and counting the number of users in each class. Locations for small cell deployment were identified based on class population. BPEM, ADEM, BUEM, EARM and NLOS models were developed for more accurate range estimation. A prototype system was implemented and tested both outdoor and indoor using a network of WiFi nodes. Experimental results show close relationship with simulation and an average PER in range estimation error of 80% by applying developed error models. Based on both simulation and experiment, system showed good performance. By deploying micro-, pico-, or femto-cells in areas of higher user concentration, high data rates and good quality of service in the network can be maintained. The observer system provides the network manager with relative angle of arrival (AoA), distance estimation and relative location of user clusters within the cell. The observer system divides the cell into a series of azimuthal and range sectors, and determines which sector the users are located in. Simulation and a prototype design of the system is presented and results have shown system robustness and high accuracy for its purpose

Fifth generation (5G), is being considered as a revolutionary technology in the telecommunication domain whose the challenges are mainly to achieve signal quality and great ability to work with free spectrum in the millimetre waves. Besides, other important innovations are the introduction of a more current architecture and the use of multiple antennas in transmission and reception. Digital communication using multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) wireless links has recently emerged as one of the most significant technical advances in modern communications. MIMO technology is able to offer a large increase in the capacity of these systems, without requiring a considerable increase in bandwidth or power required for transmission. This dissertation presents an overview of theoretical concepts of MIMO systems. With such a system a spatial diversity gain can be obtained by using space-time codes, which simultaneously exploit the spatial domain and the time domain. SISO, SIMO and MISO systems are differentiated by their channel capacity and their configuration in relation to the number of antennas in the transmitter/receiver. To verify the effectiveness of the MIMO systems a comparison between the capacity of SISO and MIMO systems has been performed using the Shannon’s principles. In the MIMO system some variations in the number of antennas arrays have been considered, and the superiority of transmission gains of the MIMO systems have been demonstrated. Combined with millimetre waves (mmWaves) technology, massive MIMO systems, where the number of antennas in the base station and the number of users are large, is a promising solution. SDR implementations have been performed considering a platform with Matlab code applied to MIMO 2x2 Radio and Universal Software Peripheral Radio (USRP). A detailed study was initially conducted to analyze the architecture of the USRP. Complex structures of MIMO systems can be simplified by using mathematical methods implemented in Matlab for the synchronization of the USRP in the receiver side. SISO transmission and reception techniques have been considered to refine the synchronization (with 16-QAM), thus facilitating the future implementation of the MIMO system. OpenAirInterface has been considered for 4G and 5G implementations of actual mobile radio communication systems. Together with the practical MIMO, this type of solution is the starting point for future hardware building blocks involving massive MIMO systems.
