ClimbAR - An Arkansas Rock Climbing Documentary

    Get PDF
The goal of this thesis project, ‘ClimbAR’ - a rock climbing documentary - is to tell the story of a fringe sport/outdoor activity in the state of Arkansas. The history of the sport has been passed down primarily by word of mouth and contained within a small, tight knit group of Arkansas rock climbers since its humble beginnings in the 1980s. Though many of the original climbers in the state have since moved on, a new generation of adventurers have taken the reins. This film focuses on the newest generation of Arkansas rock climbers. Like many climbers in the state, this story uses Cole Fennel’s guidebooks, “Rock Climbing Arkansas” Vol. I & II, to more accurately portray the wide variety of rock climbing locations in the Ozarks

    Get PDF
This paper will first provide background information about Virtual Reality in order to better analyze its development throughout history and into the future. Next, this essay begins an in-depth historical analysis of how virtual reality has developed prior to 1970, a pivotal year in Virtual Reality history, followed by an exploration of how this development paradigm shifted between the 1970\u27s and the turn of the century. The historical analysis of virtual reality is concluded by covering the modern period from 2000-present. Finally, this paper examines the layout of the virtual reality field in respect to he history and innovations presented

The Image of Taiwan as a Travel Destination: Perspectives from Mainland China

    Get PDF
This study presents the perceived and projected image of Taiwan as a travel destination from perspectives from Mainland China. The perceived image of Taiwan was examined by interviewing 28 Mainland Chinese; the projected image of Taiwan was investigated by analyzing articles in China's most popular travel magazines. The different types of images of Taiwan among visitors, nonvisitors, and travel magazines were compared. The projected image changed notably after the opening of Taiwan's tourism to travelers from Mainland China. The results of this study could help destination marketing organizations to assess their marketing strategies for the Mainland Chinese travel market

Too big, will fail. Megaevents and protest participation

    Get PDF
The paper examines the relationship between "social democratic megaevents" (Olympic Games and World Expos) and political protests. It tries to analyze the reasons that led these popular ceremonies to act in our societies as catalysts of social conflict and activators of an "agonistic citizenship". Today some structural characteristics of the network society - growth of urban populations; increase in migration flows; widening of socioeconomic disparities - determined a renewed "political" interest for these great public rituals, which in a previous season of the modernity had shown themselves capable to patch up the lacerations of the social fabric. But in recent years something is broken in the relationship between megaevents and urban populations and we are witnessing a growing antagonism against events historically conceived with a function of social "glue". The aim is therefore to reflect on the meaning of this "antagonistic drift" of "social democratic megaevents" through the analysis of a specific case study: the Attitudine NoExpo Network (Milan 2015). We identified four crucial dimensions to trace the NoExpo movement's physiognomy and define the reasons for its opposition to the world fair: the historical relation between Milan and a cultural form of antagonism; the crucial role of the territorial factor in the formation and evolution of the movement; the centrality of the practices in the structuring of the movement's identity; the adoption of an instrumental and tactical approach in the choice and use of media

Measure the Evacuees’ Preference on Architectural Cues by CAVE

    Get PDF
An evacuees’ preference prediction function on architectural cues are described here as a crucial part of the evacuation model to simulate how the evacuees search the route to exit according to the architectural information in the public underground space. The model is developed to evaluate the egress design in the initial space design stage and to provide the existing compositive evacuation models a support on the usage of architectural information. First the over simplification on the architectural information in the existing evacuation models is discussed. Then a list of so-called architectural cues and the related evacuation model are introduced, in which the evacuees always egress to the seen or remembered architectural cue with the highest preference in every step. The emphasis of the paper is put on the analysis of the preference function including the CAVE-based conjoint analysis research method, the experiment design and implementation of the virtual drill, and the estimation of the parameters from the collected choices. The preference function for five architectural cue pairs, Doorway-Doorway, Stair-Stair, Exit-Exit, Doorway-Stair, Exit-Stair is built from the choice data of nearly one hundred Chinese subjects
