In DC–DC switching-mode converters, a simple and elegant hysteretic controller is used to regulate the basic buck, boost and buck–boost converters under slightly different configurations. In AC–DC converters, the input current shaping for power factor correction posts a constraint. But, several brilliant commercial controllers are demonstrated for boost and fly back converters to achieve almost perfect power factor correction. Even though the maintenance cost of DC motor is higher than the induction motor, it is widely used in industries as the speed control of DC motor is highly attractive feature for researchers.     MULTI-DOMAIN, MULTI-OBJECTIVE-OPTIMIZATION-BASED APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF CONTROLLERS FOR POWER ELECTRONICS

    Power converter has played a very important role in modern electric power systems. The control of power converters is necessary to achieve high performance. In this study, a dc-dc buck converter is studied. The parameters of a notional proportional-integral controller are to be selected. Genetic algorithms (GAs), which have been widely used to solve multi-objective optimization problems, is used in order to locate appropriate controller design. The control metrics are specified as phase margin in frequency domain and voltage error in time-domain. GAs presented the optimal tradeoffs between these two objectives. Three candidate control designs are studied in simulation and experimentally. There is some agreement between the experimental results and the simulation results, but there are also some discrepancies due to model error. Overall, the use of multi-domain, multi-objective-optimization-based approach has proven feasible

    Simulation-based coyote optimization algorithm to determine gains of PI controller for enhancing the performance of solar PV water-pumping system

    In this study, a simulation-based coyote optimization algorithm (COA) to identify the gains of PI to ameliorate the water-pumping system performance fed from the photovoltaic system is presented. The aim is to develop a stand-alone water-pumping system powered by solar energy, i.e., without the need of electric power from the utility grid. The voltage of the DC bus was adopted as a good candidate to guarantee the extraction of the maximum power under partial shading conditions. In such a system, two proportional-integral (PI) controllers, at least, are necessary. The adjustment of (Proportional-Integral) controllers are always carried out by classical and tiresome trials and errors techniques which becomes a hard task and time-consuming. In order to overcome this problem, an optimization problem was reformulated and modeled under functional time-domain constraints, aiming at tuning these decision variables. For achieving the desired operational characteristics of the PV water-pumping system for both rotor speed and DC-link voltage, simultaneously, the proposed COA algorithm is adopted. It is carried out through resolving a multiobjective optimization problem employing the weighted-sum technique. Inspired on theCanis latransspecies, the COA algorithm is successfully investigated to resolve such a problem by taking into account some constraints in terms of time-domain performance as well as producing the maximum power from the photovoltaic generation system. To assess the efficiency of the suggested COA method, the classical Ziegler-Nichols and trial-error tuning methods for the DC-link voltage and rotor speed dynamics, were compared. The main outcomes ensured the effectiveness and superiority of the COA algorithm. Compared to the other reported techniques, it is superior in terms of convergence rapidity and solution qualities

    Speed control of an SPMSM using a tracking differentiator-PID controller scheme with a genetic algorithm

    In this paper, a tracking differentiator-proportional integral and derivative (TD-PID) control scheme is proposed to control the speed of a surface mount permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM). The TD is used to generate the necessary transient profile for both the reference and the output speed, which are compared with each other to produce the error signals that feed into the PID controller. In addition to the TD unit parameters, the PID controller’s parameters are tuned to achieve the optimum new multi-objective performance index, comprised of the integral of the time absolute error (ITAE), the absolute square of the control energy signal (USQR), and the absolute value of the control energy signal (UABS) and utilizing a genetic algorithm (GA). A nonlinear model of the SPMSM is considered in the design and the performance of the proposed TD-PID scheme was validated by comparing its performance with that of a traditional PI controller in a MATLAB environment. Different case studies were tested to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, results including peak overshoot, energy consumption, control signal chatter, and 30% improvement in the OPI, with variable reference speeds, load torque, and parameters uncertainties.     An optimized fractional order PID controller for suppressing vibration of AC motor

    Fractional order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is composed of a number of integer order PID controllers. It is more accurate to control the complex system than the traditional integer order PID controller. The values of parameters of the fractional order PID controller play a decisive role for the control effect. Because the fractional order PID controller added two adjustable parameters than the traditional PID controller, it is very difficult to tune parameters. So the Back Propagation (BP) neural network is selected to optimize the parameters of the fractional order PID controller in order to obtain the high performance. Then the optimized fractional order PID controller and the traditional PID controller are used to control AC motor speed governing system. And the vibration spectrum and stator current spectrum under different rotating speeds are compared and analyzed in detail. The results show that the optimized fractional order PID controller has better vibration suppression performance than the traditional PID controller. The reason is that the optimized fractional order PID controller changed the stator current component, and further changed the frequency components and the amplitude of the vibration signal of the motor

    The quickly increasing, widespread use of wind generation around the world reduces carbon emissions, decreases the effects of global warming, and lowers dependence on fossil fuels. However, the growing penetration of wind power requires more effort to maintain power systems stability. This dissertation focuses on developing a novel algorithm which dynamically optimizes the proportional-integral (PI) controllers of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) driven by a wind turbine to increase the transient performance based on small signal stability analysis. Firstly, the impact of wind generation is introduced. The stability of power systems with wind generation is described, including the different wind generator technologies, and the challenges in high wind penetration conditions. Secondly, the small signal stability analysis model of wind turbines with DFIG is developed, including detailed rotor/grid side converter models, and the interface with the power grid. Thirdly, Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is selected to off-line calculate the optimal parameters of DFIG PI gains to maximize the damping ratios of system eigenvalues in different wind speeds. Based on the historical data, the artificial neural networks (ANNs) are designed, trained, and have the ability to quickly forecast the optimal parameters. The ANN controllers are designed to dynamically adjust PI gains online. Finally, system studies have been provided for a single machine connected to an infinite bus system (SMIB), a single machine connected to a weak grid (SMWG), and a multi machine system (MMS), respectively. A detailed analysis for MMS with different wind penetration levels has been shown according to grid code. Moreover, voltage stability improvement and grid loss reduction in IEEE 34-bus distribution system, including WT-DFIG under unbalanced heavy loading conditions, are investigated. The simulation results show the algorithm can greatly reduce low frequency oscillations and improve transient performance of DFIGs system. It realizes off-line optimization of MMS, online forecasts the optimal PI gains, and adaptively adjusts PI gains. The results also provide some useful conclusions and explorations for wind generation design, operations, and connection to the power grid. Advisors: Sohrab Asgarpoor and Wei Qia

    Artificial Intelligent Tuning PI Controller on Wind Turbine System with Three-Phase Grid Connected System

    In order to generate the electricity from the wind turbine system with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to the three-phase grid connected system, it is very challenging because the electricity generated from wind energy resource is inconstancy. In this paper, the electrical power between the two systems are regulated by PI controller. For tuning the gains of PI controller, artificial intelligent methods, particle swarm optimization (PSO), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), artificial neural networks (ANN), are applied. The experiments of the control systems are testing at 200 w and 400 w. The experimental results show that the rise time of an electrical power of control system at 200 w tuning gains of the PI controller by ANN combined with PSO is better than the traditional tuning methods, pole placement. Therefore, the proposed intelligent system can not only reduce the overshoot of the active power but also improve the response power
