    Simulating water-entry/exit problems using Eulerian-Lagrangian and fully-Eulerian fictitious domain methods within the open-source IBAMR library

    In this paper we employ two implementations of the fictitious domain (FD) method to simulate water-entry and water-exit problems and demonstrate their ability to simulate practical marine engineering problems. In FD methods, the fluid momentum equation is extended within the solid domain using an additional body force that constrains the structure velocity to be that of a rigid body. Using this formulation, a single set of equations is solved over the entire computational domain. The constraint force is calculated in two distinct ways: one using an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework of the immersed boundary (IB) method and another using a fully-Eulerian approach of the Brinkman penalization (BP) method. Both FSI strategies use the same multiphase flow algorithm that solves the discrete incompressible Navier-Stokes system in conservative form. A consistent transport scheme is employed to advect mass and momentum in the domain, which ensures numerical stability of high density ratio multiphase flows involved in practical marine engineering applications. Example cases of a free falling wedge (straight and inclined) and cylinder are simulated, and the numerical results are compared against benchmark cases in literature.Comment: The current paper builds on arXiv:1901.07892 and re-explains some parts of it for the reader's convenienc

    High-fidelity Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis and Design Optimization for Rotorcraft Applications

    A multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis of rotorcraft simulations involving tightly coupled high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and comprehensive analysis solvers is presented and evaluated. A sensitivity-enabled fluid dynamics solver and a nonlinear flexible multibody dynamics solver are coupled to predict aerodynamic loads and structural responses of helicopter rotor blades. A discretely consistent adjoint-based sensitivity analysis available in the fluid dynamics solver provides sensitivities arising from unsteady turbulent flows and unstructured dynamic overset meshes, while a complex-variable approach is used to compute structural sensitivities with respect to aerodynamic loads. The multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis is conducted through integrating the sensitivity components from each discipline of the coupled system. Accuracy of the coupled system is validated by conducting simulations for a benchmark rotorcraft model and comparing solutions with established analyses and experimental data. Sensitivities of lift computed by the multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis are verified by comparison with the sensitivities obtained by complex-variable simulations. Finally the multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis is applied to a constrained gradient-based design optimization for a HART-II rotorcraft configuration

    Time-Spectral Rotorcraft Simulations on Overset Grids

    The Time-Spectral method is derived as a Fourier collocation scheme and applied to NASA's overset Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver OVERFLOW. The paper outlines the Time-Spectral OVERFLOWimplementation. Successful low-speed laminar plunging NACA 0012 airfoil simulations demonstrate the capability of the Time-Spectral method to resolve the highly-vortical wakes typical of more expensive three-dimensional rotorcraft configurations. Dealiasing, in the form of spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV), facilitates the convergence of Time-Spectral calculations of high-frequency flows. Finally, simulations of the isolated V-22 Osprey tiltrotor for both hover and forward (edgewise) flight validate the three-dimensional Time-Spectral OVERFLOW implementation. The Time-Spectral hover simulation matches the time-accurate calculation using a single harmonic. Significantly more temporal modes and SVV are required to accurately compute the forward flight case because of its more active, high-frequency wake

    Tsunamis Generated by Submerged Landslides: Numerical Analysis of the Near-Field Wave Characteristics

    ABSTRACT: The accurate modeling of the landslide?generated tsunami characteristics in the so-called near-field is crucial for many practical applications. In this paper, we present a new full-3-D numerical method for modeling tsunamis generated by rigid and impermeable landslides in OpenFOAM® based on the overset mesh technique. The approach has been successfully validated through the numerical reproduction of past experiments for landslide?generated tsunamis triggered by a rigid and impermeable wedge at a sloping coast. The method has been applied to perform a detailed numerical study of the near-field wave features induced by submerged landslides. A parametric analysis has been carried out to explore the importance of the landslide's initial acceleration, directly related to the landslide-triggering mechanisms, on the tsunami generation process and on the related wave properties. Near-field analysis of the numerical results confirms that the influence of the initial acceleration on the tsunami wave properties is significant, affecting wave height, wave period, and wave celerity. Furthermore, it is found that the tsunami generation mechanism experiences a saturation effect for increasing landslide's initial acceleration, confirming and extending previous studies. Moreover, the resulting extended database, composed of previous experimental data and new numerical ones, spanning a wider range of governing parameters, has been represented in the form of a “nondimensional wavemaker curve,” and a new relationship for predicting the wave properties in the near-field as a function of the Hammack number is proposed

    Fluid-structure interaction modeling on a 3D ray-strengthened caudal fin

    In this paper, we present a numerical model capable of solving the fluid-structure interaction problems involved in the dynamics of skeleton-reinforced fish fins. In this model, the fluid dynamics is simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations using a finite-volume method based on an overset, multi-block structured grid system. The bony rays embedded in the fin are modeled as nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli beams. To demonstrate the capability of this model, we numerically investigate the effect of various ray stiffness distributions on the deformation and propulsion performance of a 3D caudal fin. Our numerical results show that with specific ray stiffness distributions, certain caudal fin deformation patterns observed in real fish (e.g. the cupping deformation) can be reproduced through passive structural deformations. Among the four different stiffness distributions (uniform, cupping, W-shape and heterocercal) considered here, we find that the cupping distribution requires the least power expenditure. The uniform distribution, on the other hand, performs the best in terms of thrust generation and efficiency. The uniform stiffness distribution, per se, also leads to 'cupping' deformation patterns with relatively smaller phase differences between various rays. The present model paves the way for future work on dynamics of skeleton-reinforced membranes

    Validation of a roll decay test of an offshore installation vessel using openfoam

    In this work, the offshore heavy lift DP2 jack-up vessel Innovation from the DEME group is studied using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) toolbox OpenFOAM. The two-phase Navier-Stokes fluid solver is coupled with a motion solver using a partitioned fluid-structure interaction algorithm. Firstly, two dimensional numerical simulations of a cross-section of the hull are performed using two different mesh motion techniques: a mesh morphing method and an overset mesh method. Subsequently, the addition of a bilge keel pair on the hull is studied numerically by performing a two dimensional roll decay simulation. Finally, a three dimensional simulation is performed for a roll decay test and validated by using experimental data measured in the MARIN seakeeping and manoeuvring basin. As a first result, the coupled CFD–motion solver proofs to be a promising toolbox for the study of fluid-structure interaction problems of realistic marine structures such as an offshore installation vessel
