    Vehicle detection using background subtraction and clustering algorithms

    Traffic congestion has raised worldwide as a result of growing motorization, urbanization, and population. In fact, congestion reduces the efficiency of transportation infrastructure usage and increases travel time, air pollutions as well as fuel consumption. Then, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) comes as a solution of this problem by implementing information technology and communications networks. One classical option of Intelligent Transportation Systems is video camera technology. Particularly, the video system has been applied to collect traffic data including vehicle detection and analysis. However, this application still has limitation when it has to deal with a complex traffic and environmental condition. Thus, the research proposes OTSU, FCM and K-means methods and their comparison in video image processing. OTSU is a classical algorithm used in image segmentation, which is able to cluster pixels into foreground and background. However, only FCM (Fuzzy C-Means) and K-means algorithms have been successfully applied to cluster pixels without supervision. Therefore, these methods seem to be more potential to generate the MSE values for defining a clearer threshold for background subtraction on a moving object with varying environmental conditions. Comparison of these methods is assessed from MSE and PSNR values. The best MSE result is demonstrated from K-means and a good PSNR is obtained from FCM. Thus, the application of the clustering algorithms in detection of moving objects in various condition is more promising

    Vehicle Classification For Automatic Traffic Density Estimation

    Automatic traffic light control at intersection has recently become one of the most active research areas related to the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Due to the massive growth in urbanization and traffic congestion, intelligent vision based traffic light controller is needed to reduce the traffi c delay and travel time especially in developing countries as the current automatic time based control is not realistic while sensor-based tra ffic light controller is not reliable in developing countries. Vision based traffi c light controller depends mainly on traffic congestion estimation at cross roads, because the main road junctions of a city are these roads where most of the road-beds are lost. Most of the previous studies related to this topic do not take unattended vehicles into consideration when estimating the tra ffic density or traffi c flow. In this study we would like to improve the performance of vision based traffi c light control by detecting stationary and unattended vehicles to give them higher weights, using image processing and pattern recognition techniques for much e ffective and e ffecient tra ffic congestion estimation

    Accelerated hardware video object segmentation: From foreground detection to connected components labelling

    This is the preprint version of the Article - Copyright @ 2010 ElsevierThis paper demonstrates the use of a single-chip FPGA for the segmentation of moving objects in a video sequence. The system maintains highly accurate background models, and integrates the detection of foreground pixels with the labelling of objects using a connected components algorithm. The background models are based on 24-bit RGB values and 8-bit gray scale intensity values. A multimodal background differencing algorithm is presented, using a single FPGA chip and four blocks of RAM. The real-time connected component labelling algorithm, also designed for FPGA implementation, run-length encodes the output of the background subtraction, and performs connected component analysis on this representation. The run-length encoding, together with other parts of the algorithm, is performed in parallel; sequential operations are minimized as the number of run-lengths are typically less than the number of pixels. The two algorithms are pipelined together for maximum efficiency

    Mixture gaussian V2 based microscopic movement detection of human spermatozoa

    Healthy and superior sperm is the main requirement for a woman to get pregnant. To find out how the quality of sperm is needed several checks. One of them is a sperm analysis test to see the movement of sperm objects, the analysis is observed using a microscope and calculated manually. The first step in analyzing the scheme is detecting and separating sperm objects. This research is detecting and calculating sperm movements in video data. To detect moving sperm, the background processing of sperm video data is essential for the success of the next process. This research aims to apply and compare some background subtraction algorithms to detect and count moving sperm in microscopic videos of sperm fluid, so we get a background subtraction algorithm that is suitable for the case of sperm detection and sperm count. The research methodology begins with the acquisition of sperm video data. Then, preprocessing using a Gaussian filter, background subtraction, morphological operations that produce foreground masks, and compared with moving sperm ground truth images for validation of the detection results of each background subtraction algorithm. It also shows that the system has been able to detect and count moving sperm. The test results show that the MoG (Mixture of Gaussian) V2 (2 Dimension Variable) algorithm has an f-measure value of 0.9449 and has succeeded in extracting sperm shape close to its original form and is superior compared to other methods. To conclude, the sperm analysis process can be done automatically and efficiently in terms of time
