    Design and realization of precise indoor localization mechanism for Wi-Fi devices

    Despite the abundant literature in the field, there is still the need to find a time-efficient, highly accurate, easy to deploy and robust localization algorithm for real use. The algorithm only involves minimal human intervention. We propose an enhanced Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) based positioning algorithm for Wi-Fi capable devices, called the Dynamic Weighted Evolution for Location Tracking (DWELT). Due to the multiple phenomena affecting the propagation of radio signals, RSSI measurements show fluctuations that hinder the utilization of straightforward positioning mechanisms from widely known propagation loss models. Instead, DWELT uses data processing of raw RSSI values and applies a weighted posterior-probabilistic evolution for quick convergence of localization and tracking. In this paper, we present the first implementation of DWELT, intended for 1D location (applicable to tunnels or corridors), and the first step towards a more generic implementation. Simulations and experiments show an accuracy of 1m in more than 81% of the cases, and less than 2m in the 95%.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Ibeacon based proximity and indoor localization system

    User location can be leveraged to provide a wide range of services in a variety of indoor locations including retails stores, hospitals, airports, museums and libraries etc. The widescale proliferation of user devices such as smart phones and the interconnectivity among different entities, powered by Internet of Things (IoT), makes user device-based localization a viable approach to provide Location Based Services (LBS). Location based services can be broadly classified into 1) Proximity based services that provides services based on a rough estimate of users distance to any entity, and 2) Indoor localization that locates a user\u27s exact location in the indoor environment rather than a rough estimate of the distance. The primary requirements of these services are higher energy efficiency, localization accuracy, wide reception range, low cost and availability. Technologies such as WiFi, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Ultra Wideband (UWB) have been used to provide both indoor localization and proximity based services. Since these technologies are not primarily intended for LBS, they do not fulfill the aforementioned requirements. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled beacons that use Apple\u27s proprietary iBeacon protocol are mainly intended to provide proximity based services. iBeacons satisfy the energy efficiency, wide reception range and availability requirements of LBS. However, iBeacons are prone to noise due to their reliance on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), which drastically fluctuates in indoor environments due to interference from different obstructions. This limits its proximity detection accuracy. In this thesis, we present an iBeacon based proximity and indoor localization system. We present our two server-based algorithms to improve the proximity detection accuracy by reducing the variation in the RSSI and using the RSSI-estimated distance, rather than the RSSI itself, for proximity classification. Our algorithms Server-side Running Average and Server-side Kalman Filter improves the proximity detection accuracy by 29% and 32% respectively in contrast to Apple\u27s current approach of using moving average of RSSI values for proximity classification. We utilize a server-based approach because of the greater computing power of servers. Furthermore, server-based approach helps reduce the energy consumption of user device. We describe our cloud based architecture for iBeacon based proximity detection. We also use iBeacons for indoor localization. iBeacons are not primarily intended for indoor localization as their reliance on RSSI makes them unsuitable for accurate indoor localization. To improve the localization accuracy, we use Bayesian filtering algorithms such as Particle Filter (PF), Kalman Filter (KF), and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). We show that by cascading Kalman Filter and Extended Kalman Filter with Particle Filter, the indoor localization accuracy can be improved by 28% and 33.94% respectively when compared with only using PF. The PF, KFPF and PFEKF algorithm on the server side have average localization error of 1.441 meters, 1.0351 meters and 0.9519 meters respectively

    Hybrid ToF and RSSI real-time semantic tracking with an adaptive industrial internet of things architecture

    Real-time asset tracking in indoor mass production manufacturing environments can reduce losses associated with pausing a production line to locate an asset. Complemented by monitored contextual information, e.g. machine power usage, it can provide smart information, such as which components have been machined by a worn or damaged tool. Although sensor based Internet of Things (IoT) positioning has been developed, there are still key challenges when benchmarked approaches concentrate on precision, using computationally expensive filtering and iterative statistical or heuristic algorithms, as a trade-off for timeliness and scalability. Precise but high-cost hardware systems and invasive infrastructures of wired devices also pose implementation issues in the Industrial IoT (IIoT). Wireless, selfpowered sensors are integrated in this paper, using a novel, communication-economical RSSI/ToF ranging method in a proposed semantic IIoT architecture. Annotated data collection ensures accessibility, scalable knowledge discovery and flexibility to changes in consumer and business requirements. Deployed at a working indoor industrial facility the system demonstrated comparable RMS ranging accuracy (ToF 6m and RSSI 5.1m with 40m range) to existing systems tested in non-industrial environments and a 12.6-13.8m mean positioning accuracy

    A bluetooth low energy indoor positioning system with channel diversity, weighted trilateration and Kalman filtering

    Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology are currently becoming real and available, which has made them grow in popularity and use. However, there are still plenty of challenges related to this technology, especially in terms of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) fluctuations due to the behaviour of the channels and the multipath effect, that lead to poor precision. In order to mitigate these effects, in this paper we propose and implement a real Indoor Positioning System based on Bluetooth Low Energy, that improves accuracy while reducing power consumption and costs. The three main proposals are: frequency diversity, Kalman filtering and a trilateration method what we have denominated “weighted trilateration”. The analysis of the results proves that all the proposals improve the precision of the system, which goes up to 1.82 m 90% of the time for a device moving in a middle-size room and 0.7 m for static devices. Furthermore, we have proved that the system is scalable and efficient in terms of cost and power consumption. The implemented approach allows using a very simple device (like a SensorTag) on the items to locate.     Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge, and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control, learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity, localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature, and identify topics that require more research attention in the future

    Indoor positioning of shoppers using a network of bluetooth low energy beacons

    In this paper we present our work on the indoor positioning of users (shoppers), using a network of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons deployed in a large wholesale shopping store. Our objective is to accurately determine which product sections a user is adjacent to while traversing the store, using RSSI readings from multiple beacons, measured asynchronously on a standard commercial mobile device. We further wish to leverage the store layout (which imposes natural constraints on the movement of users) and the physical configuration of the beacon network, to produce a robust and efficient solution. We start by describing our application context and hardware configuration, and proceed to introduce our node-graph model of user location. We then describe our experimental work which begins with an investigation of signal characteristics along and across aisles. We propose three methods of localization, using a “nearest-beacon” approach as a base-line; exponentially averaged weighted range estimates; and a particle-filter method based on the RSSI attenuation model and Gaussian-noise. Our results demonstrate that the particle filter method significantly out-performs the others. Scalability also makes this method ideal for applications run on mobile devices with more limited computational capabilitie

    BLE Beacons for Indoor Positioning at an Interactive IoT-Based Smart Museum

    The Internet of Things (IoT) can enable smart infrastructures to provide advanced services to the users. New technological advancement can improve our everyday life, even simple tasks as a visit to the museum. In this paper, an indoor localization system is presented, to enhance the user experience in a museum. In particular, the proposed system relies on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons proximity and localization capabilities to automatically provide the users with cultural contents related to the observed artworks. At the same time, an RSS-based technique is used to estimate the location of the visitor in the museum. An Android application is developed to estimate the distance from the exhibits and collect useful analytics regarding each visit and provide a recommendation to the users. Moreover, the application implements a simple Kalman filter in the smartphone, without the need of the Cloud, to improve localization precision and accuracy. Experimental results on distance estimation, location, and detection accuracy show that BLE beacon is a promising solution for an interactive smart museum. The proposed system has been designed to be easily extensible to the IoT technologies and its effectiveness has been evaluated through experimentation

    RSSI Based Indoor Localization for Smartphone Using Fixed and Mobile Wireless Node

    Nowadays with the dispersion of wireless networks, smartphones and diverse related services, different localization techniques have been developed. Global Positioning System (GPS) has a high rate of accuracy for outdoor localization but the signal is not available inside of buildings. Also other existing methods for indoor localization have low accuracy. In addition, they use fixed infrastructure support. In this paper, we present a novel system for indoor localization, which also works well outside. We have developed a mathematical model for estimating location (distance and direction) of a mobile device using wireless technology. Our experimental results on Smartphones (Android and iOS) show good accuracy (an error less than 2.5 meters). We have also used our developed system in asset tracking and complex activity recognition
