Abstractionâs ecologies : post-industrialization, waste and the commodity form in Prunella Cloughâs paintings of the 1980s and 1990s
This articleâs aims are twofold: firstly, it argues that Prunella Cloughâs engagement with consumer items in her paintings of the 1980s and 1990s constitute a sustained engagement with the fluctuating nature of the commodity form, moving beyond the established critical narrative whereby these works are understood as simply redeeming âeverydayâ materials. Secondly, in order to do this, it proposes new artistic frameworks for Cloughâs work, moving away from her early association with Neo-Romanticism to foreground her relationship with Pop and Minimalism, and with Post-Conceptual painting. Thermodynamics of D-brane Probes
We discuss the dynamics and thermodynamics of particle and D-brane probes
moving in non-extremal black hole/brane backgrounds. When a probe falls from
asymptotic infinity to the horizon, it transforms its potential energy into
heat, , which is absorbed by the black hole in a way consistent with the
first law of thermodynamics. We show that the same remains true in the
near-horizon limit, for BPS probes only, with the BPS probe moving from AdS
infinity to the horizon. This is a quantitative indication that the brane-probe
reaching the horizon corresponds to thermalization in gauge theory. It is shown
that this relation provides a way to reliably compute the entropy away from the

Superconducting Vortices induced Periodic Magnetoresistance Oscillations in Single Crystal Au Nanowires
We show in this paper that it is possible to induce superconducting vortices
in a gold nanowire connected to superconducting electrodes. The gold nanowire
acquires superconductivity by the proximity effect. The differential
magnetoresistance of the nanowire beyond a critical magnetic field shows
uniform oscillations with increasing field with a period of \phi0/(2\pir^2)
(\phi0 = h/2e is the superconducting flux quantum, r = 35 nm is the radius of
the nanowire). We demonstrate that these periodic oscillations are the
signatures of the sequential generation and moving of vortices across the gold
nanowire
Nearsightedness of Electronic Matter
In an earlier paper, W. Kohn had qualitatively introduced the concept of
"nearsightedness" of electrons in many-atom systems. It can be viewed as
underlying such important ideas as Pauling's "chemical bond," "transferability"
and Yang's computational principle of "divide and conquer." It describes the
fact that, for fixed chemical potential, local electronic properties, like the
density , depend significantly on the effective external potential only
at nearby points. Changes of that potential, {\it no matter how large}, beyond
a distance have {\it limited} effects on local electronic
properties, which rapidly tend to zero as function of . In the
present paper, the concept is first sharpened for representative models of
uncharged fermions moving in external potentials, followed by a discussion of
the effects of electron-electron interactions and of perturbing external

Implementation and Deployment of a Library of the High-level Application Programming Interfaces (SemSorGrid4Env)
The high-level API service is designed to support rapid development of thin web applications and mashups beyond the state of the art in GIS, while maintaining compatibility with existing tools and expectations. It provides a fully configurable API, while maintaining a separation of concerns between domain experts, service administrators and mashup developers. It adheres to REST and Linked Data principles, and provides a novel bridge between standards-based (OGC O&M) and Semantic Web approaches. This document discusses the background motivations for the HLAPI (including experiences gained from any previously implemented versions), before moving onto specific details of the final implementation, including configuration and deployment instructions, as well as a full tutorial to assist mashup developers with using the exposed observation data
