BeSpaceD: Towards a Tool Framework and Methodology for the Specification and Verification of Spatial Behavior of Distributed Software Component Systems
In this report, we present work towards a framework for modeling and checking
behavior of spatially distributed component systems. Design goals of our
framework are the ability to model spatial behavior in a component oriented,
simple and intuitive way, the possibility to automatically analyse and verify
systems and integration possibilities with other modeling and verification
tools. We present examples and the verification steps necessary to prove
properties such as range coverage or the absence of collisions between
components and technical details
ScaRR: Scalable Runtime Remote Attestation for Complex Systems
The introduction of remote attestation (RA) schemes has allowed academia and
industry to enhance the security of their systems. The commercial products
currently available enable only the validation of static properties, such as
applications fingerprint, and do not handle runtime properties, such as
control-flow correctness. This limitation pushed researchers towards the
identification of new approaches, called runtime RA. However, those mainly work
on embedded devices, which share very few common features with complex systems,
such as virtual machines in a cloud. A naive deployment of runtime RA schemes
for embedded devices on complex systems faces scalability problems, such as the
representation of complex control-flows or slow verification phase.
In this work, we present ScaRR: the first Scalable Runtime Remote attestation
schema for complex systems. Thanks to its novel control-flow model, ScaRR
enables the deployment of runtime RA on any application regardless of its
complexity, by also achieving good performance. We implemented ScaRR and tested
it on the benchmark suite SPEC CPU 2017. We show that ScaRR can validate on
average 2M control-flow events per second, definitely outperforming existing

Virtual and rapid prototyping of an underactuated space end effector
A fast and reliable verification of an initial concept is an important need in the field of mechatronics. Usually, the steps for a successful design require multiple iterations involving a sequence of design phases-the initial one and several improvements-and the tests of the resulting prototypes, in a trial and error scheme. Now a day’s software and hardware tools allow for a faster approach, in which the iterations between design and prototyping are by far reduced, even to just one in favorable situation. This work presents the design, manufacturing and testing of a robotic end effector for space applications, realized through virtual prototyping, followed by rapid prototyping realization. The first process allows realizing a mathematical model of the robotic system that, once all the simulations confirm the effectiveness of the design, can be directly used for the rapid prototyping by means of 3D printing. The workflow and the results of the process are described in detail in this paper, showing the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the performance of both the virtual end effector and the actual physical robotic hand
Wisent: Robust Downstream Communication and Storage for Computational RFIDs
Computational RFID (CRFID) devices are emerging platforms that can enable
perennial computation and sensing by eliminating the need for batteries.
Although much research has been devoted to improving upstream (CRFID to RFID
reader) communication rates, the opposite direction has so far been neglected,
presumably due to the difficulty of guaranteeing fast and error-free transfer
amidst frequent power interruptions of CRFID. With growing interest in the
market where CRFIDs are forever-embedded in many structures, it is necessary
for this void to be filled. Therefore, we propose Wisent-a robust downstream
communication protocol for CRFIDs that operates on top of the legacy UHF RFID
communication protocol: EPC C1G2. The novelty of Wisent is its ability to
adaptively change the frame length sent by the reader, based on the length
throttling mechanism, to minimize the transfer times at varying channel
conditions. We present an implementation of Wisent for the WISP 5 and an
off-the-shelf RFID reader. Our experiments show that Wisent allows transfer up
to 16 times faster than a baseline, non-adaptive shortest frame case, i.e.
single word length, at sub-meter distance. As a case study, we show how Wisent
enables wireless CRFID reprogramming, demonstrating the world's first
