Learning to Navigate Cloth using Haptics
We present a controller that allows an arm-like manipulator to navigate
deformable cloth garments in simulation through the use of haptic information.
The main challenge of such a controller is to avoid getting tangled in, tearing
or punching through the deforming cloth. Our controller aggregates force
information from a number of haptic-sensing spheres all along the manipulator
for guidance. Based on haptic forces, each individual sphere updates its target
location, and the conflicts that arise between this set of desired positions is
resolved by solving an inverse kinematic problem with constraints.
Reinforcement learning is used to train the controller for a single
haptic-sensing sphere, where a training run is terminated (and thus penalized)
when large forces are detected due to contact between the sphere and a
simplified model of the cloth. In simulation, we demonstrate successful
navigation of a robotic arm through a variety of garments, including an
isolated sleeve, a jacket, a shirt, and shorts. Our controller out-performs two
baseline controllers: one without haptics and another that was trained based on

Control of free-flying space robot manipulator systems
New control techniques for self contained, autonomous free flying space robots were developed and tested experimentally. Free flying robots are envisioned as a key element of any successful long term presence in space. These robots must be capable of performing the assembly, maintenance, and inspection, and repair tasks that currently require human extravehicular activity (EVA). A set of research projects were developed and carried out using lab models of satellite robots and a flexible manipulator. The second generation space robot models use air cushion vehicle (ACV) technology to simulate in 2-D the drag free, zero g conditions of space. The current work is divided into 5 major projects: Global Navigation and Control of a Free Floating Robot, Cooperative Manipulation from a Free Flying Robot, Multiple Robot Cooperation, Thrusterless Robotic Locomotion, and Dynamic Payload Manipulation. Human factors in space telepresence
The problems of interfacing a human with a teleoperation system, for work in space are discussed. Much of the information presented here is the result of experience gained by the M.I.T. Space Systems Laboratory during the past two years of work on the ARAMIS (Automation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence Systems) project. Many factors impact the design of the man-machine interface for a teleoperator. The effects of each are described in turn. An annotated bibliography gives the key references that were used. No conclusions are presented as a best design, since much depends on the particular application desired, and the relevant technology is swiftly changing
NASA space station automation: AI-based technology review
Research and Development projects in automation for the Space Station are discussed. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation technologies are planned to enhance crew safety through reduced need for EVA, increase crew productivity through the reduction of routine operations, increase space station autonomy, and augment space station capability through the use of teleoperation and robotics. AI technology will also be developed for the servicing of satellites at the Space Station, system monitoring and diagnosis, space manufacturing, and the assembly of large space structures
The astronaut and the banana peel: An EVA retriever scenario
To prepare for the problem of accidents in Space Station activities, the Extravehicular Activity Retriever (EVAR) robot is being constructed, whose purpose is to retrieve astronauts and tools that float free of the Space Station. Advanced Decision Systems is at the beginning of a project to develop research software capable of guiding EVAR through the retrieval process. This involves addressing problems in machine vision, dexterous manipulation, real time construction of programs via speech input, and reactive execution of plans despite the mishaps and unexpected conditions that arise in uncontrolled domains. The problem analysis phase of this work is presented. An EVAR scenario is used to elucidate major domain and technical problems. An overview of the technical approach to prototyping an EVAR system is also presented
