    System design of the MeerKAT L - band 3D radar for monitoring near earth objects

    This thesis investigates the current knowledge of small space debris (diameter less than 10 cm) and potentially hazardous asteroids (PHA) by the use of radar systems. It clearly identifies the challenges involved in detecting and tracking of small space debris and PHAs. The most significant challenges include: difficulty in tracking small space debris due to orbital instability and reduced radar cross-section (RCS), errors in some existing data sets, the lack of dedicated or contributing instruments in the Southern Hemisphere, and the large cost involved in building a high-performance radar for this purpose. This thesis investigates the cooperative use of the KAT-7 (7 antennas) and MeerKAT (64 antennas) radio telescope receivers in a radar system to improve monitoring of small debris and PHAs was investigated using theory and simulations, as a cost-effective solution. Parameters for a low cost and high-performance radar were chosen, based on the receiver digital back-end. Data from such radars will be used to add to existing catalogues thereby creating a constantly updated database of near Earth objects and bridging the data gap that is currently being filled by mathematical models. Based on literature and system requirements, quasi-monostatic, bistatic, multistatic, single input multiple output (SIMO) radar configurations were proposed for radio telescope arrays in detecting, tracking and imaging small space debris in the low Earth orbit (LEO) and PHAs. The maximum dwell time possible for the radar geometry was found to be 30 seconds, with coherent integration limitations of 2 ms and 121 ms for accelerating and non-accelerating targets, respectively. The multistatic and SIMO radar configurations showed sufficient detection (SNR 13 dB) for small debris and quasi-monostatic configuration for PHAs. Radar detection, tracking and imaging (ISAR) simulations were compared to theory and ambiguities in range and Doppler were compensated for. The main contribution made by this work is a system design for a high performance, cost effective 3D radar that uses the KAT-7 and MeerKAT radio telescope receivers in a commensal manner. Comparing theory and simulations, the SNR improvement, dwell time increase, tracking and imaging capabilities, for small debris and PHAs compared to existing assets, was illustrated. Since the MeerKAT radio telescope is a precursor for the SKA Africa, extrapolating the capabilities of the MeerKAT radar to the SKA radar implies that it would be the most sensitive and high performing contributor to space situational awareness, upon its completion. From this feasibility study, the MeerKAT 3D distributed radar will be able to detect debris of diameter less than 10 cm at altitudes between 700 km to 900 km, and PHAs, with a range resolution of 15 m, a minimum SNR of 14 dB for 152 pulses for a coherent integration time of 2.02 ms. The target range (derived from the two way delay), velocity (from Doppler frequency) and direction will be measured within an accuracy of: 2.116 m, 15.519 m/s, 0.083° (single antenna), respectively. The range, velocity accuracies and SNR affect orbit prediction accuracy by 0.021 minutes for orbit period and 0.0057° for orbit inclination. The multistatic radar was found to be the most suitable and computationally efficient configuration compared to the bistatic and SIMO configurations, and beamforming should be implemented as required by specific target geometry

    Ground-based ISAR imaging of cooperative and non-cooperative sea vessels with 3-D rotational motion

    Includes bibliographical references (leaves 175-188).Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) images of sea vessels are a rich source of information for radar cross section (RCS) measurement and ship classification. However, ISAR imaging of sea vessels is a challenging task because the 3-D rotational motion of such vessels often gives rise to blurring. Blurry ISAR images are not desirable because they lead to inaccurate parameter estimation, which reduces the probability of correct classification. The objective of this thesis is to explain how 3-D rotational motion causes blurring in ISAR imagery and to develop effective techniques for imaging cooperative and non-cooperative sea vessels for RCS measurement and ship-classification purposes respectively. Much research has been done to investigate the effect of 3-D rotational motion on an ISAR image under the assumption that an object's axis of rotation is constant over the coherent processing interval (CPI). In this thesis, a new quaternion-based system model is proposed to characterise the amount of blurring in an ISAR image when a sea vessel possesses 3-D rotational motion over a CPI. Simulations were done to characterise the migration of a scatterer through Doppler cells due to the time-varying nature of the Doppler generating axis of rotation. Simulation results with realistic 3-D rotational motion show substantial blurring in the cross-range dimension of the resulting ISAR image, and this blurring is attributed to the time-varying nature of the angle of the Doppler generating axis of rotation and the object's rotation rate over the CPI

    EyeLS: Shadow-Guided Instrument Landing System for Intraocular Target Approaching in Robotic Eye Surgery

    Robotic ophthalmic surgery is an emerging technology to facilitate high-precision interventions such as retina penetration in subretinal injection and removal of floating tissues in retinal detachment depending on the input imaging modalities such as microscopy and intraoperative OCT (iOCT). Although iOCT is explored to locate the needle tip within its range-limited ROI, it is still difficult to coordinate iOCT's motion with the needle, especially at the initial target-approaching stage. Meanwhile, due to 2D perspective projection and thus the loss of depth information, current image-based methods cannot effectively estimate the needle tip's trajectory towards both retinal and floating targets. To address this limitation, we propose to use the shadow positions of the target and the instrument tip to estimate their relative depth position and accordingly optimize the instrument tip's insertion trajectory until the tip approaches targets within iOCT's scanning area. Our method succeeds target approaching on a retina model, and achieves an average depth error of 0.0127 mm and 0.3473 mm for floating and retinal targets respectively in the surgical simulator without damaging the retina.Comment: 10 page

    Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar: Focused Image Formation and Aliasing Artifact Mitigation

    Traditional monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platforms force the user to choose between two image types: larger, low resolution images or smaller, high resolution images. Switching to a Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (WAM-SAR) approach allows formation of large high-resolution images. Unfortunately, WAM-SAR suffers from two significant implementation problems. First, wavefront curvature effects, non-linear flight paths, and warped ground planes lead to image defocusing with traditional SAR processing methods. A new 3-D monostatic/bistatic image formation routine solves the defocusing problem, correcting for all relevant wide-angle effects. Inverse SAR (ISAR) imagery from a Radar Cross Section (RCS) chamber validates this approach. The second implementation problem stems from the large Doppler spread in the wide-angle scene, leading to severe aliasing problems. This research effort develops a new anti-aliasing technique using randomized Stepped-Frequency (SF) waveforms to form Doppler filter nulls coinciding with aliasing artifact locations. Both simulation and laboratory results demonstrate effective performance, eliminating more than 99% of the aliased energy

    Investigation of ground moving target indication techniques for a multi-channel synthetic aperture radar

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an imaging technique that creates two dimensional images of the scattering objects in the illuminated ground scene. The objects in the illuminated ground scene may be truly stationary, e.g. buildings etc. or in motion relative to these stationary objects, e.g. cars on a highway. In SAR, the radar platform is moving during the imaging period, hence everything that the radar illuminates has motion relative to the radar platform. In order to specifically detect objects on the ground that are moving relative to stationary ground objects (often termed clutter), processing techniques called Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) techniques are required. This is especially required for targets that are moving at relative velocities lower than the stationary clutter's relative velocity to the radar platform (endo-clutter detection). This dissertation investigates five multichannel GMTI techniques being Displaced Phase Centre Antenna (DPCA), Along Track Interferometry (ATI), Iterative Adaptive Approach (IAA), Space Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) and Velocity SAR (VSAR) in literature and assesses the performance of two selected GMTI techniques (ATI and DPCA) on simulated and measured radar data to compare them and identify their strengths and weaknesses. The radar data were measured with a C-band FMCW radar in a controlled environment with known parameters and cooperating targets. The performances of the techniques were assessed in terms of moving target detection within clutter and sensitivity to inaccuracies in the physical system setup. The DPCA technique exhibited some attractive characteristics over the ATI technique. These included its robustness against false alarm in noise dominated cells - ATI exhibited large phase residuals in noise dominated cells, due to the random nature of the phase in these cells. Furthermore, DPCA seem to not suffer from false alarms due to volumetric scattering of vegetation to the extent that was observed with ATI. Lastly, DPCA exhibited more robustness against temporal misalignment errors introduced between the measurement channels, compared to ATI. These observations lead to the conclusion that DPCA would be a practically better choice to implement for the purpose of moving target detection, compared to ATI. However, a double threshold approach, which used DPCA as a pre-processing step to ATI, proved to be superior to DPCA alone in terms of moving target indication within clutter and noise. This approach was verified through implementation on the measured radar data in this study

    GNSS-based passive radar techniques for maritime surveillance

    The improvement of maritime traffic safety and security is a subject of growing interest, since the traffic is constantly increasing. In fact, a large number of human activities take place in maritime domain, varying from cruise and trading ships up to vessels involved in nefarious activities such as piracy, human smuggling or terrorist actions. The systems based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder cannot cope with non-cooperative or non-equipped vessels that instead can be detected, tracked and identified by means of radar system. In particular, passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems can perform these tasks without a dedicated transmitter, since they exploit illuminators of opportunity as transmitters. The lack of a dedicated transmitter makes such systems low cost and suitable to be employed in areas where active sensors cannot be placed such as, for example, marine protected areas. Innovative solutions based on terrestrial transmitters have been considered in order to increase maritime safety and security, but these kinds of sources cannot guarantee a global coverage, such as in open sea. To overcome this problem, the exploitation of global navigation satellites system (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity is a prospective solution. The global, reliable and persistent nature of these sources makes them potentially able to guarantee the permanent monitoring of both coastal and open sea areas. To this aim, this thesis addresses the exploitation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity in passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems for maritime surveillance. The main limitation of this technology is the restricted power budget provided by navigation satellites, which makes it necessary to define innovative moving target detection techniques specifically tailored for the system under consideration. For this reason, this thesis puts forward long integration time techniques able to collect the signal energy over long time intervals (tens of seconds), allowing the retrieval of suitable levels of signal-to-disturbance ratios for detection purposes. The feasibility of this novel application is firstly investigated in a bistatic system configuration. A long integration time moving target detection technique working in bistatic range&Doppler plane is proposed and its effectiveness is proved against synthetic and experimental datasets. Subsequently the exploitation of multiple transmitters for the joint detection and localization of vessels at sea is also investigated. A single-stage approach to jointly detect and localize the ship targets by making use of long integration times (tens of seconds) and properly exploiting the spatial diversity offered by such a configuration is proposed. Furthermore, the potential of the system to extract information concerning the detected target characteristics for further target classification is assessed

    Novel Hybrid-Learning Algorithms for Improved Millimeter-Wave Imaging Systems

    Increasing attention is being paid to millimeter-wave (mmWave), 30 GHz to 300 GHz, and terahertz (THz), 300 GHz to 10 THz, sensing applications including security sensing, industrial packaging, medical imaging, and non-destructive testing. Traditional methods for perception and imaging are challenged by novel data-driven algorithms that offer improved resolution, localization, and detection rates. Over the past decade, deep learning technology has garnered substantial popularity, particularly in perception and computer vision applications. Whereas conventional signal processing techniques are more easily generalized to various applications, hybrid approaches where signal processing and learning-based algorithms are interleaved pose a promising compromise between performance and generalizability. Furthermore, such hybrid algorithms improve model training by leveraging the known characteristics of radio frequency (RF) waveforms, thus yielding more efficiently trained deep learning algorithms and offering higher performance than conventional methods. This dissertation introduces novel hybrid-learning algorithms for improved mmWave imaging systems applicable to a host of problems in perception and sensing. Various problem spaces are explored, including static and dynamic gesture classification; precise hand localization for human computer interaction; high-resolution near-field mmWave imaging using forward synthetic aperture radar (SAR); SAR under irregular scanning geometries; mmWave image super-resolution using deep neural network (DNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT) architectures; and data-level multiband radar fusion using a novel hybrid-learning architecture.     Battle damage assessment using inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR)

    An imaging radar, like ISAR, offers a combatant the capability to perform long range surveillance with high quality imagery for positive target identification. Extending this attractive feature to the battle damage assessment problem (BDA) gives the operator instant viewing of the target's behavior when it is hit. As a consequence, immediate and decisive action can be quickly taken (if required). However, the conventional Fourier processing adopted by most ISAR systems does not provide adequate time resolution to capture the target's dynamic responses during the hit. As a result, the radar image becomes distorted. To improve the time resolution, time-frequency transform (TFT) methods of ISAR imaging have been proposed. Unlike traditional Fourier-based processing, TFT's allows variable time resolution of the entire event that falls within the ISAR coherent integration period to be extracted as part of the imaging process. We have shown in this thesis that the use of linear Short Time-Frequency Transforms allows the translational response of the aircraft caused by a blast force to be clearly extracted. The TFT extracted images not only tell us how the aircraft responds to a blast effect but also provides additional information about the cause of image distortion in the traditional ISAR display.http://archive.org/details/battledamagesses109451223Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
