Virtual Texture Generated using Elastomeric Conductive Block Copolymer in Wireless Multimodal Haptic Glove.
Haptic devices are in general more adept at mimicking the bulk properties of materials than they are at mimicking the surface properties. This paper describes a haptic glove capable of producing sensations reminiscent of three types of near-surface properties: hardness, temperature, and roughness. To accomplish this mixed mode of stimulation, three types of haptic actuators were combined: vibrotactile motors, thermoelectric devices, and electrotactile electrodes made from a stretchable conductive polymer synthesized in our laboratory. This polymer consisted of a stretchable polyanion which served as a scaffold for the polymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). The scaffold was synthesized using controlled radical polymerization to afford material of low dispersity, relatively high conductivity (0.1 S cm-1), and low impedance relative to metals. The glove was equipped with flex sensors to make it possible to control a robotic hand and a hand in virtual reality (VR). In psychophysical experiments, human participants were able to discern combinations of electrotactile, vibrotactile, and thermal stimulation in VR. Participants trained to associate these sensations with roughness, hardness, and temperature had an overall accuracy of 98%, while untrained participants had an accuracy of 85%. Sensations could similarly be conveyed using a robotic hand equipped with sensors for pressure and temperature
Trajectory Deformations from Physical Human-Robot Interaction
Robots are finding new applications where physical interaction with a human
is necessary: manufacturing, healthcare, and social tasks. Accordingly, the
field of physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) has leveraged impedance
control approaches, which support compliant interactions between human and
robot. However, a limitation of traditional impedance control is that---despite
provisions for the human to modify the robot's current trajectory---the human
cannot affect the robot's future desired trajectory through pHRI. In this
paper, we present an algorithm for physically interactive trajectory
deformations which, when combined with impedance control, allows the human to
modulate both the actual and desired trajectories of the robot. Unlike related
works, our method explicitly deforms the future desired trajectory based on
forces applied during pHRI, but does not require constant human guidance. We
present our approach and verify that this method is compatible with traditional
impedance control. Next, we use constrained optimization to derive the
deformation shape. Finally, we describe an algorithm for real time
implementation, and perform simulations to test the arbitration parameters.
Experimental results demonstrate reduction in the human's effort and
improvement in the movement quality when compared to pHRI with impedance
control alone
Robot Impedance Control and Passivity Analysis with Inner Torque and Velocity Feedback Loops
Impedance control is a well-established technique to control interaction
forces in robotics. However, real implementations of impedance control with an
inner loop may suffer from several limitations. Although common practice in
designing nested control systems is to maximize the bandwidth of the inner loop
to improve tracking performance, it may not be the most suitable approach when
a certain range of impedance parameters has to be rendered. In particular, it
turns out that the viable range of stable stiffness and damping values can be
strongly affected by the bandwidth of the inner control loops (e.g. a torque
loop) as well as by the filtering and sampling frequency. This paper provides
an extensive analysis on how these aspects influence the stability region of
impedance parameters as well as the passivity of the system. This will be
supported by both simulations and experimental data. Moreover, a methodology
for designing joint impedance controllers based on an inner torque loop and a
positive velocity feedback loop will be presented. The goal of the velocity
feedback is to increase (given the constraints to preserve stability) the

Position / force control of systems subjected to communicaton delays and interruptions in bilateral teleoperation

The human operator sends commands through the controller (master) system to execute the tasks from a distance. The operator is provided with necessary (visual, audio or haptic) feedback to accomplish the mission remotely. In bilateral teleoperation, continuous feedback from the remote environment is generated. Thus, the operator can handle the task as if the operator is in the remote environment relying on the relevant feedback. Since teleoperation deals with systems controlled from a distance, time delays and package losses in transmission of information are present. These communication failures affect the human perception and system stability, and thus, the ability of operator to handle the task successfully. The objective of this thesis is to investigate and develop a control algorithm, which utilizes model mediated teleoperation integrating parallel position/force controllers, to compensate for the instability issues and excessive forcing applied to the environment arising from communication failures. Model mediation technique is extended for three-degrees-of-freedom teleoperation and a parallel position/force controller, impedance controller, is integrated in the control algorithm. The proposed control method is experimentally tested by using Matlab Simulink blocksets for real-time experimentation in which haptic desktop devices, Novint Falcon and Phantom Desktop are configured as master and slave subsystems of the bilateral teleoperation. The results of these tests indicate that the stability and passivity of proposed bilateral teleoperation systems are preserved during constant and variable time delays and data losses while the position and force tracking test results provide acceptable performance with bounded errors
Haptics in Robot-Assisted Surgery: Challenges and Benefits
Robotic surgery is transforming the current surgical practice, not only by improving the conventional surgical methods but also by introducing innovative robot-enhanced approaches that broaden the capabilities of clinicians. Being mainly of man-machine collaborative type, surgical robots are seen as media that transfer pre- and intra-operative information to the operator and reproduce his/her motion, with appropriate filtering, scaling, or limitation, to physically interact with the patient. The field, however, is far from maturity and, more critically, is still a subject of controversy in medical communities. Limited or absent haptic feedback is reputed to be among reasons that impede further spread of surgical robots. In this paper objectives and challenges of deploying haptic technologies in surgical robotics is discussed and a systematic review is performed on works that have studied the effects of providing haptic information to the users in major branches of robotic surgery. It has been tried to encompass both classical works and the state of the art approaches, aiming at delivering a comprehensive and balanced survey both for researchers starting their work in this field and for the experts
DandelionTouch: High Fidelity Haptic Rendering of Soft Objects in VR by a Swarm of Drones
To achieve high fidelity haptic rendering of soft objects in a high mobility
virtual environment, we propose a novel haptic display DandelionTouch. The
tactile actuators are delivered to the fingertips of the user by a swarm of
drones. Users of DandelionTouch are capable of experiencing tactile feedback in
a large space that is not limited by the device's working area. Importantly,
they will not experience muscle fatigue during long interactions with virtual
objects. Hand tracking and swarm control algorithm allow guiding the swarm with
hand motions and avoid collisions inside the formation.
Several topologies of the impedance connection between swarm units were
investigated in this research. The experiment, in which drones performed a
point following task on a square trajectory in real-time, revealed that drones
connected in a Star topology performed the trajectory with low mean positional
error (RMSE decreased by 20.6% in comparison with other impedance topologies
and by 40.9% in comparison with potential field-based swarm control). The
achieved velocities of the drones in all formations with impedance behavior
were 28% higher than for the swarm controlled with the potential field
algorithm.
Additionally, the perception of several vibrotactile patterns was evaluated
in a user study with 7 participants. The study has shown that the proposed
combination of temporal delay and frequency modulation allows users to
successfully recognize the surface property and motion direction in VR
simultaneously (mean recognition rate of 70%, maximum of 93%). DandelionTouch
suggests a new type of haptic feedback in VR systems where no hand-held or

A robot hand testbed designed for enhancing embodiment and functional neurorehabilitation of body schema in subjects with upper limb impairment or loss.
Many upper limb amputees experience an incessant, post-amputation "phantom limb pain" and report that their missing limbs feel paralyzed in an uncomfortable posture. One hypothesis is that efferent commands no longer generate expected afferent signals, such as proprioceptive feedback from changes in limb configuration, and that the mismatch of motor commands and visual feedback is interpreted as pain. Non-invasive therapeutic techniques for treating phantom limb pain, such as mirror visual feedback (MVF), rely on visualizations of postural changes. Advances in neural interfaces for artificial sensory feedback now make it possible to combine MVF with a high-tech "rubber hand" illusion, in which subjects develop a sense of embodiment with a fake hand when subjected to congruent visual and somatosensory feedback. We discuss clinical benefits that could arise from the confluence of known concepts such as MVF and the rubber hand illusion, and new technologies such as neural interfaces for sensory feedback and highly sensorized robot hand testbeds, such as the "BairClaw" presented here. Our multi-articulating, anthropomorphic robot testbed can be used to study proprioceptive and tactile sensory stimuli during physical finger-object interactions. Conceived for artificial grasp, manipulation, and haptic exploration, the BairClaw could also be used for future studies on the neurorehabilitation of somatosensory disorders due to upper limb impairment or loss. A remote actuation system enables the modular control of tendon-driven hands. The artificial proprioception system enables direct measurement of joint angles and tendon tensions while temperature, vibration, and skin deformation are provided by a multimodal tactile sensor. The provision of multimodal sensory feedback that is spatiotemporally consistent with commanded actions could lead to benefits such as reduced phantom limb pain, and increased prosthesis use due to improved functionality and reduced cognitive burden
