    3D Tracking Using Multi-view Based Particle Filters

    Visual surveillance and monitoring of indoor environments using multiple cameras has become a field of great activity in computer vision. Usual 3D tracking and positioning systems rely on several independent 2D tracking modules applied over individual camera streams, fused using geometrical relationships across cameras. As 2D tracking systems suffer inherent difficulties due to point of view limitations (perceptually similar foreground and background regions causing fragmentation of moving objects, occlusions), 3D tracking based on partially erroneous 2D tracks are likely to fail when handling multiple-people interaction. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a Bayesian framework for combining 2D low-level cues from multiple cameras directly into the 3D world through 3D Particle Filters. This method allows to estimate the probability of a certain volume being occupied by a moving object, and thus to segment and track multiple people across the monitored area. The proposed method is developed on the basis of simple, binary 2D moving region segmentation on each camera, considered as different state observations. In addition, the method is proved well suited for integrating additional 2D low-level cues to increase system robustness to occlusions: in this line, a naĂŻve color-based (HSI) appearance model has been integrated, resulting in clear performance improvements when dealing with complex scenarios

    Motion Cooperation: Smooth Piece-Wise Rigid Scene Flow from RGB-D Images

    We propose a novel joint registration and segmentation approach to estimate scene flow from RGB-D images. Instead of assuming the scene to be composed of a number of independent rigidly-moving parts, we use non-binary labels to capture non-rigid deformations at transitions between the rigid parts of the scene. Thus, the velocity of any point can be computed as a linear combination (interpolation) of the estimated rigid motions, which provides better results than traditional sharp piecewise segmentations. Within a variational framework, the smooth segments of the scene and their corresponding rigid velocities are alternately refined until convergence. A K-means-based segmentation is employed as an initialization, and the number of regions is subsequently adapted during the optimization process to capture any arbitrary number of independently moving objects. We evaluate our approach with both synthetic and real RGB-D images that contain varied and large motions. The experiments show that our method estimates the scene flow more accurately than the most recent works in the field, and at the same time provides a meaningful segmentation of the scene based on 3D motion.Universidad de MĂĄlaga.     Occlusion-Robust MVO: Multimotion Estimation Through Occlusion Via Motion Closure

    Visual motion estimation is an integral and well-studied challenge in autonomous navigation. Recent work has focused on addressing multimotion estimation, which is especially challenging in highly dynamic environments. Such environments not only comprise multiple, complex motions but also tend to exhibit significant occlusion. Previous work in object tracking focuses on maintaining the integrity of object tracks but usually relies on specific appearance-based descriptors or constrained motion models. These approaches are very effective in specific applications but do not generalize to the full multimotion estimation problem. This paper presents a pipeline for estimating multiple motions, including the camera egomotion, in the presence of occlusions. This approach uses an expressive motion prior to estimate the SE (3) trajectory of every motion in the scene, even during temporary occlusions, and identify the reappearance of motions through motion closure. The performance of this occlusion-robust multimotion visual odometry (MVO) pipeline is evaluated on real-world data and the Oxford Multimotion Dataset.Comment: To appear at the 2020 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS).     Occlusion resistant learning of intuitive physics from videos

    To reach human performance on complex tasks, a key ability for artificial systems is to understand physical interactions between objects, and predict future outcomes of a situation. This ability, often referred to as intuitive physics, has recently received attention and several methods were proposed to learn these physical rules from video sequences. Yet, most of these methods are restricted to the case where no, or only limited, occlusions occur. In this work we propose a probabilistic formulation of learning intuitive physics in 3D scenes with significant inter-object occlusions. In our formulation, object positions are modeled as latent variables enabling the reconstruction of the scene. We then propose a series of approximations that make this problem tractable. Object proposals are linked across frames using a combination of a recurrent interaction network, modeling the physics in object space, and a compositional renderer, modeling the way in which objects project onto pixel space. We demonstrate significant improvements over state-of-the-art in the intuitive physics benchmark of IntPhys. We apply our method to a second dataset with increasing levels of occlusions, showing it realistically predicts segmentation masks up to 30 frames in the future. Finally, we also show results on predicting motion of objects in real videos

    SegICP: Integrated Deep Semantic Segmentation and Pose Estimation

    Recent robotic manipulation competitions have highlighted that sophisticated robots still struggle to achieve fast and reliable perception of task-relevant objects in complex, realistic scenarios. To improve these systems' perceptive speed and robustness, we present SegICP, a novel integrated solution to object recognition and pose estimation. SegICP couples convolutional neural networks and multi-hypothesis point cloud registration to achieve both robust pixel-wise semantic segmentation as well as accurate and real-time 6-DOF pose estimation for relevant objects. Our architecture achieves 1cm position error and <5^\circ$ angle error in real time without an initial seed. We evaluate and benchmark SegICP against an annotated dataset generated by motion capture.Comment: IROS camera-read

    Object-based 2D-to-3D video conversion for effective stereoscopic content generation in 3D-TV applications

    Three-dimensional television (3D-TV) has gained increasing popularity in the broadcasting domain, as it enables enhanced viewing experiences in comparison to conventional two-dimensional (2D) TV. However, its application has been constrained due to the lack of essential contents, i.e., stereoscopic videos. To alleviate such content shortage, an economical and practical solution is to reuse the huge media resources that are available in monoscopic 2D and convert them to stereoscopic 3D. Although stereoscopic video can be generated from monoscopic sequences using depth measurements extracted from cues like focus blur, motion and size, the quality of the resulting video may be poor as such measurements are usually arbitrarily defined and appear inconsistent with the real scenes. To help solve this problem, a novel method for object-based stereoscopic video generation is proposed which features i) optical-flow based occlusion reasoning in determining depth ordinal, ii) object segmentation using improved region-growing from masks of determined depth layers, and iii) a hybrid depth estimation scheme using content-based matching (inside a small library of true stereo image pairs) and depth-ordinal based regularization. Comprehensive experiments have validated the effectiveness of our proposed 2D-to-3D conversion method in generating stereoscopic videos of consistent depth measurements for 3D-TV applications

    Video object segmentation introducing depth and motion information

    We present a method to estimate the relative depth between objects in scenes of video sequences. The information for the estimation of the relative depth is obtained from the overlapping produced between objects when there is relative motion as well as from motion coherence between neighbouring regions. A relaxation labelling algorithm is used to solve conflicts and assign every region to a depth level. The depth estimation is used in a segmentation scheme which uses grey level information to produce a first segmentation.
