    Planning grasping motions for humanoid robots

    This paper addresses the problem of obtaining the required motions for a humanoid robot to perform grasp actions trying to mimic the coordinated hand–arm movements humans do. The first step is the data acquisition and analysis, which consists in capturing human movements while grasping several everyday objects (covering four possible grasp types), mapping them to the robot and computing the hand motion synergies for the pre-grasp and grasp phases (per grasp type). Then, the grasp and motion synthesis step is done, which consists in generating potential grasps for a given object using the four family types, and planning the motions using a bi-directional multi-goal sampling-based planner, which efficiently guides the motion planning following the synergies in a reduced search space, resulting in paths with human-like appearance. The approach has been tested in simulation, thoroughly compared with other state-of-the-art planning algorithms obtaining better results, and also implemented in a real robot.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Human-like arm motion generation: a review

    In the last decade, the objectives outlined by the needs of personal robotics have led to the rise of new biologically-inspired techniques for arm motion planning. This paper presents a literature review of the most recent research on the generation of human-like arm movements in humanoid and manipulation robotic systems. Search methods and inclusion criteria are described. The studies are analyzed taking into consideration the sources of publication, the experimental settings, the type of movements, the technical approach, and the human motor principles that have been used to inspire and assess human-likeness. Results show that there is a strong focus on the generation of single-arm reaching movements and biomimetic-based methods. However, there has been poor attention to manipulation, obstacle-avoidance mechanisms, and dual-arm motion generation. For these reasons, human-like arm motion generation may not fully respect human behavioral and neurological key features and may result restricted to specific tasks of human-robot interaction.     Event-Driven Technologies for Reactive Motion Planning: Neuromorphic Stereo Vision and Robot Path Planning and Their Application on Parallel Hardware

    Die Robotik wird immer mehr zu einem Schlüsselfaktor des technischen Aufschwungs. Trotz beeindruckender Fortschritte in den letzten Jahrzehnten, übertreffen Gehirne von Säugetieren in den Bereichen Sehen und Bewegungsplanung noch immer selbst die leistungsfähigsten Maschinen. Industrieroboter sind sehr schnell und präzise, aber ihre Planungsalgorithmen sind in hochdynamischen Umgebungen, wie sie für die Mensch-Roboter-Kollaboration (MRK) erforderlich sind, nicht leistungsfähig genug. Ohne schnelle und adaptive Bewegungsplanung kann sichere MRK nicht garantiert werden. Neuromorphe Technologien, einschließlich visueller Sensoren und Hardware-Chips, arbeiten asynchron und verarbeiten so raum-zeitliche Informationen sehr effizient. Insbesondere ereignisbasierte visuelle Sensoren sind konventionellen, synchronen Kameras bei vielen Anwendungen bereits überlegen. Daher haben ereignisbasierte Methoden ein großes Potenzial, schnellere und energieeffizientere Algorithmen zur Bewegungssteuerung in der MRK zu ermöglichen. In dieser Arbeit wird ein Ansatz zur flexiblen reaktiven Bewegungssteuerung eines Roboterarms vorgestellt. Dabei wird die Exterozeption durch ereignisbasiertes Stereosehen erreicht und die Pfadplanung ist in einer neuronalen Repräsentation des Konfigurationsraums implementiert. Die Multiview-3D-Rekonstruktion wird durch eine qualitative Analyse in Simulation evaluiert und auf ein Stereo-System ereignisbasierter Kameras übertragen. Zur Evaluierung der reaktiven kollisionsfreien Online-Planung wird ein Demonstrator mit einem industriellen Roboter genutzt. Dieser wird auch für eine vergleichende Studie zu sample-basierten Planern verwendet. Ergänzt wird dies durch einen Benchmark von parallelen Hardwarelösungen wozu als Testszenario Bahnplanung in der Robotik gewählt wurde. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die vorgeschlagenen neuronalen Lösungen einen effektiven Weg zur Realisierung einer Robotersteuerung für dynamische Szenarien darstellen. Diese Arbeit schafft eine Grundlage für neuronale Lösungen bei adaptiven Fertigungsprozesse, auch in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Menschen, ohne Einbußen bei Geschwindigkeit und Sicherheit.     Optimization of Humanoid's Motions under Multiple Constraints in Vehicle-Handling Task

    In this dissertation, an approach on whole body motion optimization is presented for humanoid vehicle-handling task. To achieve this goal, the author built a reinforcement-learning-agent based trajectory-optimization framework. The framework planned and optimized a guideline input trajectory with respect to various kinematic and dynamic constraints. A path planner module designed an initial suboptimal motion. Reinforcement learning was then implemented to optimize the trajectories with respect to time-varying constraints at the body and joint level. The cost functions in the body level calculated a robot's static balancing ability, collisions and validity of the end-effector movement. Quasi-static balancing and collisions were computed from kinematic models of the robot and the vehicle. Various costs such as joint angle and velocity limits were computed in the joint level. Energy consumption such as torque limit obedience was also checked at the joint level. Such physical limits of each joint ensured both spatial and temporal smoothness of the generated trajectories. Keeping overall structure of the framework, cost functions and learning algorithm were selected adaptively based on the requirements of given tasks. After the optimization process, experimental tests of the presented approach are demonstrated through simulations using a virtual robot model. Verification-and-validation process then confirmed the efficacy of the optimized trajectory approach using the robot's real physical platform.     Planning and Control Strategies for Motion and Interaction of the Humanoid Robot COMAN+

    Despite the majority of robotic platforms are still confined in controlled environments such as factories, thanks to the ever-increasing level of autonomy and the progress on human-robot interaction, robots are starting to be employed for different operations, expanding their focus from uniquely industrial to more diversified scenarios. Humanoid research seeks to obtain the versatility and dexterity of robots capable of mimicking human motion in any environment. With the aim of operating side-to-side with humans, they should be able to carry out complex tasks without posing a threat during operations. In this regard, locomotion, physical interaction with the environment and safety are three essential skills to develop for a biped. Concerning the higher behavioural level of a humanoid, this thesis addresses both ad-hoc movements generated for specific physical interaction tasks and cyclic movements for locomotion. While belonging to the same category and sharing some of the theoretical obstacles, these actions require different approaches: a general high-level task is composed of specific movements that depend on the environment and the nature of the task itself, while regular locomotion involves the generation of periodic trajectories of the limbs. Separate planning and control architectures targeting these aspects of biped motion are designed and developed both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint, demonstrating their efficacy on the new humanoid robot COMAN+, built at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. The problem of interaction has been tackled by mimicking the intrinsic elasticity of human muscles, integrating active compliant controllers. However, while state-of-the-art robots may be endowed with compliant architectures, not many can withstand potential system failures that could compromise the safety of a human interacting with the robot. This thesis proposes an implementation of such low-level controller that guarantees a fail-safe behaviour, removing the threat that a humanoid robot could pose if a system failure occurred

    Real-Time Navigation for Bipedal Robots in Dynamic Environments

    The popularity of mobile robots has been steadily growing, with these robots being increasingly utilized to execute tasks previously completed by human workers. Bipedal robots, a subset of mobile robots, have been a popular field of research due to the large range of tasks for which they can be utilized. For bipedal robots to see a similarly successful integration into society, robust autonomous navigation systems need to be designed. These autonomous navigation systems can generally be divided into three components: perception, planning, and control. A holistic navigation system for bipedal robots must successfully integrate all three components of the autonomous navigation problem to enable robust real-world navigation. Many works expand on fundamental planning algorithms such as A*, RRT, and PRM to address the unique problems of bipedal motion planning. However, many of these works lack several components required for autonomous navigation systems such as real-time perception, mapping, and localization processes. Thus, the goal of this research is to develop a real-time navigation system for bipedal robots in dynamic environments which addresses all components of the navigation problem. To achieve this: a depth-based sensor suite was used for obstacle segmentation, mapping, and localization. Additionally, a two-stage planning system generates collision-free and kinematically feasible trajectories robust to unknown and dynamic environments. Finally, the Digit bipedal robot's default low-level controller is used to execute these feasible trajectories. The navigation system was first validated on a differential drive robot in simulation. Next, the system was adapted for bipedal robots and validated in hardware on the Digit bipedal robot.     Accelerating Motion Planning via Optimal Transport

    Motion planning is still an open problem for many disciplines, e.g., robotics, autonomous driving, due to their need for high computational resources that hinder real-time, efficient decision-making. A class of methods striving to provide smooth solutions is gradient-based trajectory optimization. However, those methods usually suffer from bad local minima, while for many settings, they may be inapplicable due to the absence of easy-to-access gradients of the optimization objectives. In response to these issues, we introduce Motion Planning via Optimal Transport (MPOT) -- a \textit{gradient-free} method that optimizes a batch of smooth trajectories over highly nonlinear costs, even for high-dimensional tasks, while imposing smoothness through a Gaussian Process dynamics prior via the planning-as-inference perspective. To facilitate batch trajectory optimization, we introduce an original zero-order and highly-parallelizable update rule: the Sinkhorn Step, which uses the regular polytope family for its search directions. Each regular polytope, centered on trajectory waypoints, serves as a local cost-probing neighborhood, acting as a \textit{trust region} where the Sinkhorn Step "transports" local waypoints toward low-cost regions. We theoretically show that Sinkhorn Step guides the optimizing parameters toward local minima regions of non-convex objective functions. We then show the efficiency of MPOT in a range of problems from low-dimensional point-mass navigation to high-dimensional whole-body robot motion planning, evincing its superiority compared to popular motion planners, paving the way for new applications of optimal transport in motion planning.Comment: Published as a conference paper at NeurIPS 2023. Such task is extremely complicated and the results are not totally satisfactory. However, with increasing technological advances based on theoretical and experimental researches, man gets, in a way, to copy or to imitate some systems of the human body. These researches not only intended to create humanoid robots, great part of them constituting autonomous systems, but also, in some way, to offer a higher knowledge of the systems that form the human body, objectifying possible applications in the technology of rehabilitation of human beings, gathering in a whole studies related not only to Robotics, but also to Biomechanics, Biomimmetics, Cybernetics, among other areas.
