Chronic-Pain Protective Behavior Detection with Deep Learning
In chronic pain rehabilitation, physiotherapists adapt physical activity to
patients' performance based on their expression of protective behavior,
gradually exposing them to feared but harmless and essential everyday
activities. As rehabilitation moves outside the clinic, technology should
automatically detect such behavior to provide similar support. Previous works
have shown the feasibility of automatic protective behavior detection (PBD)
within a specific activity. In this paper, we investigate the use of deep
learning for PBD across activity types, using wearable motion capture and
surface electromyography data collected from healthy participants and people
with chronic pain. We approach the problem by continuously detecting protective
behavior within an activity rather than estimating its overall presence. The
best performance reaches mean F1 score of 0.82 with leave-one-subject-out cross
validation. When protective behavior is modelled per activity type, performance
is mean F1 score of 0.77 for bend-down, 0.81 for one-leg-stand, 0.72 for
sit-to-stand, 0.83 for stand-to-sit, and 0.67 for reach-forward. This
performance reaches excellent level of agreement with the average experts'
rating performance suggesting potential for personalized chronic pain
management at home. We analyze various parameters characterizing our approach
to understand how the results could generalize to other PBD datasets and

Designing for Ballet Classes: Identifying and Mitigating Communication Challenges Between Dancers and Teachers
Dancer-teacher communication in a ballet class can be challenging: ballet is one of the most complex forms of movements, and learning happens through multi-faceted interactions with studio tools (mirror, barre, and floor) and the teacher. We conducted an interview-based qualitative study with seven ballet teachers and six dancers followed by an open-coded analysis to explore the communication challenges that arise while teaching and learning in the ballet studio. We identified key communication issues, including adapting to multi-level dancer expertise, transmitting and realigning development goals, providing personalized corrections and feedback, maintaining the state of flow, and communicating how to properly use tools in the environment. We discuss design implications for crafting technological interventions aimed at mitigating these communication challenges

Trends in virtual reality technologies for the learning patient
NextMed convened the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality 22 (MMVR 22) conference in 2016. Since 1992, the conference has brought together a diverse group of researchers to share creative solutions for the evolving challenge of integrating virtual reality tools into medical education. Virtual reality (VR) and its enabling technologies utilize hardware and software to simulate environments and encounters where users can interact and learn. The MMVR 22 symposium proceedings contain projects that support a variety of learners: medical students, practitioners, soldiers, and patients. This report will contemplate the trends in virtual reality technologies for patients navigating their medical and healthcare learning. The learning patient seeks more than intervention; they seek prevention. From virtual humans and environments to motion sensors and haptic devices, patients are surrounded by increasingly rich and transformative data-driven tools. Applied data enables VR applications to simulate experience, predict health outcomes, and motivate new behavior. The MMVR 22 presents investigations into the usability of wearable devices, the efficacy of avatar inclusion, and the viability of multi-player gaming. Data literacy in the smart university approach
Equipping classrooms with inexpensive sensors for data collection can provide students and teachers with the opportunity to interact with the classroom in a smart way. In this paper two approaches to acquiring contextual data from a classroom environment are presented. We further present our approach to analysing the collected room usage data on site, using low cost single board computer, such as a Raspberry Pi and Arduino units, performing a significant part of the data analysis on-site. We demonstrate how the usage data was used to model specifcic room usage situation as cases in a Case-based reasoning (CBR) system. The room usage data was then integrated in a room recommender system, reasoning on the formalised usage data, allowing for a convenient and intuitive end user experience based on the collected raw sensor data. Having implemented and tested our approaches we are currently investigating the possibility of using (XML)Schema-informed compression to enhance the security and efficiency of the transmission of a large number of sensor reports generated by interpreting the raw data on-site, to our central data sink. We are investigating this new approach to usage data transmission as we are aiming to integrate our on-going work into our vision of the Smart University to ensure and enhance the Smart University's data literacy
A study on the application of nicenet for learning
The aim of this research is to investigate how KUiTTHO students use an online forum in the process of learning; how KUiTTHO students communicate with their lecturer and the socio-linguistic aspect of using and online platform. The participants of this research were students from Electrical Department who were taking the subject- Electric and Magnet subject in KUiTTHO. The number of the students in the sample class was 63. This research is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The researcher used four methods in the data collection. They were interview, observation, content analysis and questionnaire. The online platform used to conduct this research was Nicenet. At the end of this research, the finding suggests that online classroom should be applied into the process of teaching and learning in institution of higher education in Malaysia such as KUiTTH
