Using language technologies to support individual formative feedback
In modern educational environments for group learning it is often challenging for tutors to provide timely individual formative feedback to learners. Taking the case of undergraduate Medicine, we have found that formative feedback is generally provided to learners on an ad-hoc basis, usually at the group, rather than individual, level. Consequently, conceptual issues for individuals often remain undetected until summative assessment. In many subject domains, learners will typically produce written materials to record their study activities. One way for tutors to diagnose conceptual development issues for an individual learner would be to analyse the contents of the learning materials they produce, which would be a significant undertaking.
CONSPECT is one of six core web-based services of the Language Technologies for Lifelong Learning (LTfLL) project. This European Union Framework 7-funded project seeks to make use of Language Technologies to provide semi-automated analysis of the large quantities of text generated by learners through the course of their learning. CONSPECT aims to provide formative feedback and monitoring of learnersâ conceptual development. It uses a Natural Language Processing method, based on Latent Semantic Analysis, to compare learner materials to reference models generated from reference or learning materials.

Nudging folks towards stronger password choices:providing certainty is the key
Persuading people to choose strong passwords is challenging. One way to influence password strength, as and when people are making the choice, is to tweak the choice architecture to encourage stronger choice. A variety of choice architecture manipulations i.e. ânudgesâ, have been trialled by researchers with a view to strengthening the overall password profile. None has made much of a difference so far. Here we report on our design of an influential behavioural intervention tailored to the password choice context: a hybrid nudge that significantly prompted stronger passwords.We carried out three longitudinal studies to analyse the efficacy of a range of ânudgesâ by manipulating the password choice architecture of an actual university web application. The first and second studies tested the efficacy of several simple visual framing ânudgesâ. Password strength did not budge. The third study tested expiration dates directly linked to password strength. This manipulation delivered a positive result: significantly longer and stronger passwords. Our main conclusion was that the final successful nudge provided participants with absolute certainty as to the benefit of a stronger password, and that it was this certainty that made the difference
Identification of threshold concepts involved in early electronics: Some new methods and results
This manuscript reports the threshold concepts identified over a two-year study in early circuits and electronics courses. Some novel methods have been used to improve confidence in the identification process. We also identify some concepts, potentially threshold, that ought to have been mastered in high-school physics courses but that are often absent from student repertoires. Weak understanding of these underlying concepts may be a confusing factor for researchers in their search for threshold concepts as well as an additional source of trouble for students of electronics
Teaching and Learning Data Visualization: Ideas and Assignments
This article discusses how to make statistical graphics a more prominent
element of the undergraduate statistics curricula. The focus is on several
different types of assignments that exemplify how to incorporate graphics into
a course in a pedagogically meaningful way. These assignments include having
students deconstruct and reconstruct plots, copy masterful graphs, create
one-minute visual revelations, convert tables into `pictures', and develop
interactive visualizations with, e.g., the virtual earth as a plotting canvas.
In addition to describing the goals and details of each assignment, we also
discuss the broader topic of graphics and key concepts that we think warrant
inclusion in the statistics curricula. We advocate that more attention needs to
be paid to this fundamental field of statistics at all levels, from
introductory undergraduate through graduate level courses. With the rapid rise
of tools to visualize data, e.g., Google trends, GapMinder, ManyEyes, and
Tableau, and the increased use of graphics in the media, understanding the
principles of good statistical graphics, and having the ability to create
informative visualizations is an ever more important aspect of statistics
education

Supporting location-based inquiry learning across school, field and home contexts
Here we explore how technology can be applied to support inquiry learning spanning a range of contexts. The development process of a location-based inquiry learning toolset is presented for a secondary school GCSE Geography project. The design framework used and the process of participatory development is discussed with regard to the co-development of the activities and tools involved in an inquiry project. The lessons learned relate to the formation of a motivational context for the inquiry; the role of personal data collection in the field; the use of bridging representations across field and classroom activities; and the development of flexible, re-usable tools to support and bridge sequences of activities
Towards an Intelligent Tutor for Mathematical Proofs
Computer-supported learning is an increasingly important form of study since
it allows for independent learning and individualized instruction. In this
paper, we discuss a novel approach to developing an intelligent tutoring system
for teaching textbook-style mathematical proofs. We characterize the
particularities of the domain and discuss common ITS design models. Our
approach is motivated by phenomena found in a corpus of tutorial dialogs that
were collected in a Wizard-of-Oz experiment. We show how an intelligent tutor
for textbook-style mathematical proofs can be built on top of an adapted
assertion-level proof assistant by reusing representations and proof search
strategies originally developed for automated and interactive theorem proving.
The resulting prototype was successfully evaluated on a corpus of tutorial
