    A context-based navigation paradigm for accessing web data.

    This paper presents a context-based navigation paradigm, so as to overcome the phenomenon of user disorientation in a Web environment. Conventional navigation along static links is complemented by run-time generated guided tours, which are derived dynamically from the context of a user's information requirements. The result is a two-dimensional navigation paradigm, which reconciles complete navigational freedom and flexibility with a measure of linear guidance. In particular, they need to be flexible in order to cope with dynamism in different forms (e.g. service and data providers and consumers). The current trend to build applications out of remote services makes the availability of constituent application components inherently dynamic. Developers can no longer assume that applications are static after development or at run time. Unfortunately, developing applications that are able to cope with dynamism is very complex.Existing development approaches do not provide explicit support for managing dynamism. In this paper we describe Rondo, a tool suite for designing pervasive applications. More specifically, we present our propositions in pervasive application specification, which borrows concepts from service-oriented component assembly, model-driven engineering (MDE) and continuous deployment, resulting in a more flexible approach than traditional application definitions. Then the capabilities of our application model are demonstrated with an example application scenario designed using our approach

    A Hierarchical Filtering-Based Monitoring Architecture for Large-scale Distributed Systems

    On-line monitoring is essential for observing and improving the reliability and performance of large-scale distributed (LSD) systems. In an LSD environment, large numbers of events are generated by system components during their execution and interaction with external objects (e.g. users or processes). These events must be monitored to accurately determine the run-time behavior of an LSD system and to obtain status information that is required for debugging and steering applications. However, the manner in which events are generated in an LSD system is complex and represents a number of challenges for an on-line monitoring system. Correlated events axe generated concurrently and can occur at multiple locations distributed throughout the environment. This makes monitoring an intricate task and complicates the management decision process. Furthermore, the large number of entities and the geographical distribution inherent with LSD systems increases the difficulty of addressing traditional issues, such as performance bottlenecks, scalability, and application perturbation. This dissertation proposes a scalable, high-performance, dynamic, flexible and non-intrusive monitoring architecture for LSD systems. The resulting architecture detects and classifies interesting primitive and composite events and performs either a corrective or steering action. When appropriate, information is disseminated to management applications, such as reactive control and debugging tools. The monitoring architecture employs a novel hierarchical event filtering approach that distributes the monitoring load and limits event propagation. This significantly improves scalability and performance while minimizing the monitoring intrusiveness. The architecture provides dynamic monitoring capabilities through: subscription policies that enable applications developers to add, delete and modify monitoring demands on-the-fly, an adaptable configuration that accommodates environmental changes, and a programmable environment that facilitates development of self-directed monitoring tasks. Increased flexibility is achieved through a declarative and comprehensive monitoring language, a simple code instrumentation process, and automated monitoring administration. These elements substantially relieve the burden imposed by using on-line distributed monitoring systems. In addition, the monitoring system provides techniques to manage the trade-offs between various monitoring objectives. The proposed solution offers improvements over related works by presenting a comprehensive architecture that considers the requirements and implied objectives for monitoring large-scale distributed systems. This architecture is referred to as the HiFi monitoring system. To demonstrate effectiveness at debugging and steering LSD systems, the HiFi monitoring system has been implemented at the Old Dominion University for monitoring the Interactive Remote Instruction (IRI) system. The results from this case study validate that the HiFi system achieves the objectives outlined in this thesis

    Teaching geography for a sustainable world: a case study of a secondary school in Spain

    Geography has a major responsibility in delivering education for sustainable development (ESD), especially because the geographical concepts of place and space are key dimensions for the analysis and pursuit of sustainability. This paper presents the results of a research that investigated how the teaching of geography in secondary education in Catalonia (Spain) contributes to ESD. For the development of this research it was explored what is involved in understanding and resolving issues about sustainable development and how geography teachers might best conceptualize and teach in this new domain. As a result of this theoretical reflection it has been defined a proposal or model for reorienting the geography curriculum from the basis of the ESD paradigm, which is based and structured in four groups of criteria and recommendations as follows: recommendations for defining competences and learning objectives; criteria for selecting geographical contents and themes; criteria for selecting geographical areas and for the use of scale; and finally, recommendations for choosing the most suitable teaching and learning approach

    Applying autonomy to distributed satellite systems: Trends, challenges, and future prospects

    While monolithic satellite missions still pose significant advantages in terms of accuracy and operations, novel distributed architectures are promising improved flexibility, responsiveness, and adaptability to structural and functional changes. Large satellite swarms, opportunistic satellite networks or heterogeneous constellations hybridizing small-spacecraft nodes with highperformance satellites are becoming feasible and advantageous alternatives requiring the adoption of new operation paradigms that enhance their autonomy. While autonomy is a notion that is gaining acceptance in monolithic satellite missions, it can also be deemed an integral characteristic in Distributed Satellite Systems (DSS). In this context, this paper focuses on the motivations for system-level autonomy in DSS and justifies its need as an enabler of system qualities. Autonomy is also presented as a necessary feature to bring new distributed Earth observation functions (which require coordination and collaboration mechanisms) and to allow for novel structural functions (e.g., opportunistic coalitions, exchange of resources, or in-orbit data services). Mission Planning and Scheduling (MPS) frameworks are then presented as a key component to implement autonomous operations in satellite missions. An exhaustive knowledge classification explores the design aspects of MPS for DSS, and conceptually groups them into: components and organizational paradigms; problem modeling and representation; optimization techniques and metaheuristics; execution and runtime characteristics and the notions of tasks, resources, and constraints. This paper concludes by proposing future strands of work devoted to study the trade-offs of autonomy in large-scale, highly dynamic and heterogeneous networks through frameworks that consider some of the limitations of small spacecraft technologies.Postprint (author's final draft

    An Inquiry into the Competitiveness of Emerging Philippine Cities

    This paper attempts to approximate the competitiveness of the country’s ten leading emerging urban centers: Angeles, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Davao City, General Santos, Iligan, Iloilo, San Fernando La Union, Tacloban and Zamboanga. The study uses both ranking and scoring methods to rate the cities in eight major drivers: cost competitiveness, human resources endowment, infrastructure, linkages with major urban centers and growth areas, quality of life, responsive of local government units and dynamism of local economy. It best serves as a policy and urban management tool for concerned local officials and leaders of various private sector groups in identifying the cities’ strength and areas of improvement. Insights on overall scores and rankings point to the importance of local leadership, emphasis on improving quality of lives in urban centers and the role of surrounding local and/or international growth formations in enhancing urban competitiveness. Any combination of these factors actually explains the high rankings garnered by General Santos City, Angeles City and Baguio.urban management, urbanization, competitiveness, urban development
