A fault-tolerant intelligent robotic control system
This paper describes the concept, design, and features of a fault-tolerant intelligent robotic control system being developed for space and commercial applications that require high dependability. The comprehensive strategy integrates system level hardware/software fault tolerance with task level handling of uncertainties and unexpected events for robotic control. The underlying architecture for system level fault tolerance is the distributed recovery block which protects against application software, system software, hardware, and network failures. Task level fault tolerance provisions are implemented in a knowledge-based system which utilizes advanced automation techniques such as rule-based and model-based reasoning to monitor, diagnose, and recover from unexpected events. The two level design provides tolerance of two or more faults occurring serially at any level of command, control, sensing, or actuation. The potential benefits of such a fault tolerant robotic control system include: (1) a minimized potential for damage to humans, the work site, and the robot itself; (2) continuous operation with a minimum of uncommanded motion in the presence of failures; and (3) more reliable autonomous operation providing increased efficiency in the execution of robotic tasks and decreased demand on human operators for controlling and monitoring the robotic servicing routines
Advanced service monitoring configurations with SLA decomposition and selection
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for Software Services aim to clearly identify the service level commitments established between service requesters and providers. The commitments that are agreed however can be expressed in complex notations through a combination of expressions that need to evaluated and monitored efficiently. The dynamic allocation of the responsibility for monitoring SLAs (and often different parts within them) to different monitoring components is necessary as both SLAs and the components available for monitoring them may change dynamically during the operation of a service based system. In this paper we discuss an approach to supporting this dynamic configuration, and in particular, how SLAs expressed in higher-level notations can be efficiently decomposed and appropriate monitoring components dynamically allocated for each part of the agreements. The approach is illustrated with mechanical support in the form of a configuration service which can be incorporated into SLA-based service monitoring infrastructures
Remote and Centralized Monitoring of PV Power Plants
This paper presents the concept and operating principles of a low-cost and flexible monitoring system for PV plants. Compared to classical solutions which can require dedicated hardware and/or specialized data logging systems, the monitoring system we propose allows parallel monitoring of PV plants with different architectures and locations by taking advantage of the intrinsic monitoring capabilities of the inverters and their internet connectivity. The backbone of the system is a software system capable of collecting production measurements and current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curve measurements from the inverters within each PV plant. The monitoring software stores the PV measurements in a data warehouse optimized for managing and data mining large amounts of data, from where it can be later visualized, analyzed and exported. By combining PV production measurements data with I-V curve measurements the diagnostic and condition monitoring capabilities of the PV system can be greatly enhanced. The practical implementation and operation of the monitoring system is demonstrated with a study case system deployed at Aalborg University.</p
Design of Wind Turbine Vibration Monitoring System
In order to ensure safety of wind turbine operation and to reduce the occurrence of faults as well as to improve the reliability of wind turbine operation, a vibration monitoring for wind turbine is developed. In this paper, it analyses the enlargement of all the parts of the structure and the working mechanism, the research method of wind turbine operation vibration is introduced, with the focus being the use of the sensor principle. Finally the hardware design and software of this system is introduced and the main function of this system is described, which realizes condition monitoring of the work state of wind turbines
The FRAM robotic telescope for atmospheric monitoring at the Pierre Auger Observatory
FRAM (F/Photometric Robotic Atmospheric Monitor) is a robotic telescope operated at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina for the purposes of atmospheric monitoring using stellar photometry. As a passive system which does not produce any light that could interfere with the observations of the fluorescence telescopes of the observatory, it complements the active monitoring systems that use lasers. We discuss the applications of stellar photometry for atmospheric monitoring at optical observatories in general and the particular modes of operation employed by the Auger FRAM. We describe in detail the technical aspects of FRAM, the hardware and software requirements for a successful operation of a robotic telescope for such a purpose and their implementation within the FRAM system

Improved metrics collection and correlation for the CERN cloud storage test framework
Storage space is one of the most important ingredients that the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) needs for its experiments and operation. Part of the Data & Storage Services (IT-DSS) group’s work at CERN is focused on testing and evaluating the cloud storage system that is provided by the openlab partner Huawei, Huawei Universal Disk Storage System (UDS). As a whole, the system consists of both software and hardware.
The objective of the Huawei-CERN partnership is to investigate the performance of the cloud storage system. Among the interesting questions are the system’s scalability, reliability and ability to store and retrieve files. During the tests, possible bugs and malfunctions can be discovered and corrected. Different versions of the storage software that runs inside the storage system can also be compared to each other.
The nature of testing and benchmarking a storage system gives rise to several small tasks that can be done during a short summer internship. In order to test the storage system a test framework developed by the DSS group is used. The framework consists of various types of file transfer tests, client and server monitoring programs and log file analysis programs. Part of the work done was additions to the existing framework and part was developing new tools. Metrics collection was the central theme. Metrics are to be understood as system statistics, such as memory consumption or processor usage.
Memory usage and disk reads/writes were added to the existing client real-time monitoring framework. CPU and memory usage, network traffic (bytes received/sent) and the number of processes running are collected from a client computer before and after a daily test. Two other additions are visualization for storage system log files, as well as a new monitoring tool for the storage system. This report is divided into parts describing each part of the framework that was improved or added, the problem and the final solution. A short description of the code and the architecture are also included

Measured Water Temperature Characteristics in a Pipeline Distribution System
YesThis paper describes the design, development, deployment and performance assessment of a
prototype system for monitoring the 'health' of a water distribution network based on the
temperature distribution and time-dependent variations in temperature across the network. It
has been found that the water temperature can reveal unusual events in a water distribution
network, indicated by dynamic variations in spatial temperature differential. Based on this
indication it is shown how patterns of changes in the water temperature can be analysed using
AQUIS pipeline distribution software and used in conjunction with hydraulic (e.g. flow and
pressure) sensors to indicate the state of ¿health¿ of the network during operation
