Contention-aware performance monitoring counter support for real-time MPSoCs
Tasks running in MPSoCs experience contention delays when accessing MPSoC’s shared resources, complicating task timing analysis and deriving execution time bounds. Understanding the Actual Contention Delay (ACD) each task suffers due to other corunning tasks, and the particular hardware shared resources in which contention occurs, is of prominent importance to increase confidence on derived execution time bounds of tasks. And, whenever those bounds are violated, ACD provides information on the reasons for overruns. Unfortunately, existing MPSoC designs considered in real-time domains offer limited hardware support to measure tasks’ ACD losing all these potential benefits. In this paper we propose the Contention Cycle Stack (CCS), a mechanism that extends performance monitoring counters to track specific events that allow estimating the ACD that each task suffers from every contending task on every hardware shared resource. We build the CCS using a set of specialized low-overhead Performance Monitoring Counters for the Cobham Gaisler GR740 (NGMP) MPSoC – used in the space domain – for which we show CCS’s benefits. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Space Agency under contracts 4000109680,

Self-* overload control for distributed web systems
Unexpected increases in demand and most of all flash crowds are considered
the bane of every web application as they may cause intolerable delays or even
service unavailability. Proper quality of service policies must guarantee rapid
reactivity and responsiveness even in such critical situations. Previous
solutions fail to meet common performance requirements when the system has to
face sudden and unpredictable surges of traffic. Indeed they often rely on a
proper setting of key parameters which requires laborious manual tuning,
preventing a fast adaptation of the control policies. We contribute an original
Self-* Overload Control (SOC) policy. This allows the system to self-configure
a dynamic constraint on the rate of admitted sessions in order to respect
service level agreements and maximize the resource utilization at the same
time. Our policy does not require any prior information on the incoming traffic
or manual configuration of key parameters. We ran extensive simulations under a
wide range of operating conditions, showing that SOC rapidly adapts to time
varying traffic and self-optimizes the resource utilization. It admits as many
new sessions as possible in observance of the agreements, even under intense
workload variations. We compared our algorithm to previously proposed
approaches highlighting a more stable behavior and a better performance.Comment: The full version of this paper, titled "Self-* through self-learning:
overload control for distributed web systems", has been published on Computer
Networks, Elsevier. The simulator used for the evaluation of the proposed
algorithm is available for download at the address:

Review and assessment of simplification measures in cohesion policy 2007-2013 : Report to policy department B: structural and cohesion policies
Simplification has been an ongoing feature of Cohesion policy reform debates since 1988, and the most recent simplification exercise responds to the economic crisis and involves measures for speeding up programme implementation. The study by John Bachtler and Carlos Mendez drew on an online survey of IQ-Net partners in May 2010 to assess their experience of individual simplification measures. The research also made extensive use of material from IQ-Net Review papers published over the past 18 months which have reported on the relevance and utility of the simplification exercise. The study found that these measures have been at least partially effective, with some programmes playing a major role in dealing with the crisis, through accelerated spending or special instruments. The longer term focus of attention is on how the current, administratively complex management and control system can be simplified while maintaining assurance on the regularity of spending
Technical Design Report for PANDA Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC)
This document presents the technical layout and the envisaged performance of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC) for the
PANDA target spectrometer. The EMC has been designed to meet the physics goals of the PANDA experiment. The performance figures are based on extensive prototype tests and radiation hardness studies. The document shows that the EMC is ready for construction up to the front-end electronics interface
