Robust Feature Detection and Local Classification for Surfaces Based on Moment Analysis
The stable local classification of discrete surfaces with respect to features such as edges and corners or concave and convex regions, respectively, is as quite difficult as well as indispensable for many surface processing applications. Usually, the feature detection is done via a local curvature analysis. If concerned with large triangular and irregular grids, e.g., generated via a marching cube algorithm, the detectors are tedious to treat and a robust classification is hard to achieve. Here, a local classification method on surfaces is presented which avoids the evaluation of discretized curvature quantities. Moreover, it provides an indicator for smoothness of a given discrete surface and comes together with a built-in multiscale. The proposed classification tool is based on local zero and first moments on the discrete surface. The corresponding integral quantities are stable to compute and they give less noisy results compared to discrete curvature quantities. The stencil width for the integration of the moments turns out to be the scale parameter. Prospective surface processing applications are the segmentation on surfaces, surface comparison, and matching and surface modeling. Here, a method for feature preserving fairing of surfaces is discussed to underline the applicability of the presented approach.
Probability flux as a method for detecting scaling
We introduce a new method for detecting scaling in time series. The method
uses the properties of the probability flux for stochastic self-affine
processes and is called the probability flux analysis (PFA). The advantages of
this method are: 1) it is independent of the finiteness of the moments of the
self-affine process; 2) it does not require a binning procedure for numerical
evaluation of the the probability density function. These properties make the
method particularly efficient for heavy tailed distributions in which the
variance is not finite, for example, in Levy alpha-stable processes. This
utility is established using a comparison with the diffusion entropy (DE)
method
Covariate conscious approach for Gait recognition based upon Zernike moment invariants
Gait recognition i.e. identification of an individual from his/her walking
pattern is an emerging field. While existing gait recognition techniques
perform satisfactorily in normal walking conditions, there performance tend to
suffer drastically with variations in clothing and carrying conditions. In this
work, we propose a novel covariate cognizant framework to deal with the
presence of such covariates. We describe gait motion by forming a single 2D
spatio-temporal template from video sequence, called Average Energy Silhouette
image (AESI). Zernike moment invariants (ZMIs) are then computed to screen the
parts of AESI infected with covariates. Following this, features are extracted
from Spatial Distribution of Oriented Gradients (SDOGs) and novel Mean of
Directional Pixels (MDPs) methods. The obtained features are fused together to
form the final well-endowed feature set. Experimental evaluation of the
proposed framework on three publicly available datasets i.e. CASIA dataset B,
OU-ISIR Treadmill dataset B and USF Human-ID challenge dataset with recently
published gait recognition approaches, prove its superior performance.Comment: 11 page
Detecting Similarity of Rational Plane Curves
A novel and deterministic algorithm is presented to detect whether two given
rational plane curves are related by means of a similarity, which is a central
question in Pattern Recognition. As a by-product it finds all such
similarities, and the particular case of equal curves yields all symmetries. A
complete theoretical description of the method is provided, and the method has
been implemented and tested in the Sage system for curves of moderate degrees.Comment: 22 page
Accurate Feature Extraction and Control Point Correction for Camera Calibration with a Mono-Plane Target
The paper addresses two problems related to 3D camera calibration using a single mono-plane calibration target with circular control marks. The first problem is how to compute accurately the locations of the features (ellipses) in images of the target. Since the structure of the control marks is known beforehand, we propose to use a shape-specific searching technique to find the optimal locations of the features. Our experiments have shown this technique generates more accurate feature locations than the state-of-the-art ellipse extraction methods. The second problem is how to refine the control mark locations with unknown manufacturing errors. We demonstrate in a case study, where the control marks are laser printed on a A4 paper, that the manufacturing errors of the control marks can be compensated to a good extent so that the remaining calibration errors are reduced significantly. 1
