Improving QPSK Transmission In Band-Limited Channels With Interchannel Interference Through Equalization
This paper describes the use of equalization in conjunction with channel filtering to improve QPSK transmission subject to both InterSymbol interference (ISI) and interchange interference (ICI). Performance bounds are computed using the nonclassical Gauss-quadrature rule (GQR) method. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain due to linear equalization over Non equalization is thereby obtained and presented. The performance of a linear equalizer thus obtained is compared with the Viterbi algorithm sequence estimator (VASE). In the absence of bounds for the VASE receiver under the channel conditions considered, simulation results are used to make the comparison. With a possible difference in the accuracies of the performance thus obtained it is shown that the VASE provides improved performance over the linear equalizer under the channel conditions considered. Error Rates of the Maximum-Likelihood Detector for Arbitrary Constellations: Convex/Concave Behavior and Applications
Motivated by a recent surge of interest in convex optimization techniques,
convexity/concavity properties of error rates of the maximum likelihood
detector operating in the AWGN channel are studied and extended to
frequency-flat slow-fading channels. Generic conditions are identified under
which the symbol error rate (SER) is convex/concave for arbitrary
multi-dimensional constellations. In particular, the SER is convex in SNR for
any one- and two-dimensional constellation, and also in higher dimensions at
high SNR. Pairwise error probability and bit error rate are shown to be convex
at high SNR, for arbitrary constellations and bit mapping. Universal bounds for
the SER 1st and 2nd derivatives are obtained, which hold for arbitrary
constellations and are tight for some of them. Applications of the results are
discussed, which include optimum power allocation in spatial multiplexing
systems, optimum power/time sharing to decrease or increase (jamming problem)
error rate, an implication for fading channels ("fading is never good in low
dimensions") and optimization of a unitary-precoded OFDM system. For example,
the error rate bounds of a unitary-precoded OFDM system with QPSK modulation,
which reveal the best and worst precoding, are extended to arbitrary
constellations, which may also include coding. The reported results also apply
to the interference channel under Gaussian approximation, to the bit error rate
when it can be expressed or approximated as a non-negative linear combination
of individual symbol error rates, and to coded systems.Comment: accepted by IEEE IT Transaction
On Time-Variant Distortions in Multicarrier Transmission with Application to Frequency Offsets and Phase Noise
Phase noise and frequency offsets are due to their time-variant behavior one
of the most limiting disturbances in practical OFDM designs and therefore
intensively studied by many authors. In this paper we present a generalized
framework for the prediction of uncoded system performance in the presence of
time-variant distortions including the transmitter and receiver pulse shapes as
well as the channel. Therefore, unlike existing studies, our approach can be
employed for more general multicarrier schemes. To show the usefulness of our
approach, we apply the results to OFDM in the context of frequency offset and
Wiener phase noise, yielding improved bounds on the uncoded performance. In
particular, we obtain exact formulas for the averaged performance in AWGN and
time-invariant multipath channels.Comment: 10 pages (twocolumn), 5 figure

Trellis phase codes for power-bandwith efficient satellite communications
Support work on improved power and spectrum utilization on digital satellite channels was performed. Specific attention is given to the class of signalling schemes known as continuous phase modulation (CPM). The specific work described in this report addresses: analytical bounds on error probability for multi-h phase codes, power and bandwidth characterization of 4-ary multi-h codes, and initial results of channel simulation to assess the impact of band limiting filters and nonlinear amplifiers on CPM performance
Satellite communication performance evaluation: Computational techniques based on moments
Computational techniques that efficiently compute bit error probabilities when only moments of the various interference random variables are available are presented. The approach taken is a generalization of the well known Gauss-Quadrature rules used for numerically evaluating single or multiple integrals. In what follows, basic algorithms are developed. Some of its properties and generalizations are shown and its many potential applications are described. Some typical interference scenarios for which the results are particularly applicable include: intentional jamming, adjacent and cochannel interferences; radar pulses (RFI); multipath; and intersymbol interference. While the examples presented stress evaluation of bit error probilities in uncoded digital communication systems, the moment techniques can also be applied to the evaluation of other parameters, such as computational cutoff rate under both normal and mismatched receiver cases in coded systems. Another important application is the determination of the probability distributions of the output of a discrete time dynamical system. This type of model occurs widely in control systems, queueing systems, and synchronization systems (e.g., discrete phase locked loops)
Shuttle Ku-band signal design study
Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed
A Linear Subspace Approach to Burst Communication Signal Processing
This dissertation focuses on the topic of burst signal communications in a high interference environment. It derives new signal processing algorithms from a mathematical linear subspace approach instead of the common stationary or cyclostationary approach. The research developed new algorithms that have well-known optimality criteria associated with them. The investigation demonstrated a unique class of multisensor filters having a lower mean square error than all other known filters, a maximum likelihood time difference of arrival estimator that outperformed previously optimal estimators, and a signal presence detector having a selectivity unparalleled in burst interference environments. It was further shown that these improvements resulted in a greater ability to communicate, to locate electronic transmitters, and to mitigate the effects of a growing interference environment
