    A Modular Programmable CMOS Analog Fuzzy Controller Chip

    We present a highly modular fuzzy inference analog CMOS chip architecture with on-chip digital programmability. This chip consists of the interconnection of parameterized instances of two different kind of blocks, namely label blocks and rule blocks. The architecture realizes a lattice partition of the universe of discourse, which at the hardware level means that the fuzzy labels associated to every input (realized by the label blocks) are shared among the rule blocks. This reduces the area and power consumption and is the key point for chip modularity. The proposed architecture is demonstrated through a 16-rule two input CMOS 1-μm prototype which features an operation speed of 2.5 Mflips (2.5×10^6 fuzzy inferences per second) with 8.6 mW power consumption. Core area occupation of this prototype is of only 1.6 mm 2 including the digital control and memory circuitry used for programmability.     We present a fuzzy inference chip capable to evaluate 16 programmable rules at a speed of 2.5Mflips (2.5 × 10 6 fuzzy inferences per second) with 8.6mW power consumption. It occupies 2.89mm 2 (including pads) in a CMOS 1μm single-poly technology. Measurements are given to demonstrate its performance. All the operations needed for fuzzy inference are realized on-chip using analog circuitry compatible with standard VLSI CMOS technologies. On-chip digital control and memory circuitry is also incorporated for programmability. The chip architecture and circuitry are based on our design methodology for neurofuzzy systems reported in [1]. A few architectural modifications are made to share circuitry among rules and, thus, obtain reduced area and power consumption. The chip parameters can be learned in situ, for operation in a changing environment, by using dedicated hardware-compatible learning algorithms [1][8

    A multiplexed mixed-signal fuzzy architecture

    Analog circuits provide better area/power efficiency than their digital counterparts for low-medium precision requirements. This limit in precision as well as the lack of design tools when compared to the digital approach, imposes a limit of complexity, hence fuzzy analog controllers are usually oriented to fast low-power systems with low-medium complexity. The paper presents a strategy to preserve most of the advantages of an analog implementation, while allowing a notorious increment of the system complexity. Such strategy consists in implementing a reduced number of rules, those that really determine the output in a lattice controller, which we call analog core, then this core is dynamically programmed to perform the computation related to a specific rule set. The data to program the analog core are stored in a memory, and constitutes the whole knowledge base in a kind of virtual rule set. HSPICE simulations from an exemplary controller are shown to illustrate the viability of the proposal

    This paper presents a mixed-signal neuro-fuzzy controller chip which, in terms of power consumption, input–output delay, and precision, performs as a fully analog implementation. However, it has much larger complexity than its purely analog counterparts. This combination of performance and complexity is achieved through the use of a mixed-signal architecture consisting of a programmable analog core of reduced complexity, and a strategy, and the associated mixed-signal circuitry, to cover the whole input space through the dynamic programming of this core. Since errors and delays are proportional to the reduced number of fuzzy rules included in the analog core, they are much smaller than in the case where the whole rule set is implemented by analog circuitry. Also, the area and the power consumption of the new architecture are smaller than those of its purely analog counterparts simply because most rules are implemented through programming. The Paper presents a set of building blocks associated to this architecture, and gives results for an exemplary prototype. This prototype, called multiplexing fuzzy controller (MFCON), has been realized in a CMOS 0.7 um standard technology. It has two inputs, implements 64 rules, and features 500 ns of input to output delay with 16-mW of power consumption. Results from the chip in a control application with a dc motor are also provided

    What grid cells convey about rat location

    We characterize the relationship between the simultaneously recorded quantities of rodent grid cell firing and the position of the rat. The formalization reveals various properties of grid cell activity when considered as a neural code for representing and updating estimates of the rat's location. We show that, although the spatially periodic response of grid cells appears wasteful, the code is fully combinatorial in capacity. The resulting range for unambiguous position representation is vastly greater than the ≈1–10 m periods of individual lattices, allowing for unique high-resolution position specification over the behavioral foraging ranges of rats, with excess capacity that could be used for error correction. Next, we show that the merits of the grid cell code for position representation extend well beyond capacity and include arithmetic properties that facilitate position updating. We conclude by considering the numerous implications, for downstream readouts and experimental tests, of the properties of the grid cell code

    Interfacing PDM sensors with PFM spiking systems: application for Neuromorphic Auditory Sensors

    In this paper we present a sub-system to convert audio information from low-power MEMS microphones with pulse density modulation (PDM) output into rate coded spike streams. These spikes represent the input signal of a Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor (NAS), which is implemented with Spike Signal Processing (SSP) building blocks. For this conversion, we have designed a HDL component for FPGA able to interface with PDM microphones and converts their pulses to temporal distributed spikes following a pulse frequency modulation (PFM) scheme with an accurate configurable Inter-Spike-Interval. The new FPGA component has been tested in two scenarios, first as a stand-alone circuit for its characterization, and then it has been integrated with a full NAS design to verify its behavior. This PDM interface demands less than 1% of a Spartan 6 FPGA resources and has a power consumption below 5mW.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-
