    The Role of Modular Robotics in Mediating Nonverbal Social Exchanges

    This paper outlines the use of modular robotics to encourage and facilitate non-verbal communication during therapeutic intervention in dementia care. A set of new socially interactive modular robotic devices called Rolling Pins (RPs) have been designed and developed to assist the therapist in interacting with dementia affected patients. The RPs are semi-transparent plastic tubes capable of measuring their orientation and the speed of their rotation; at a local level they have three types of feedback: RGB light, sound and vibration. The peculiarity of the RPs is that they are able to communicate with each other or with other devices equipped with the same radio communication technology. The RPs are usually used in pairs, as the local feedback of an RP can be set depending not only on its own speed and orientation, but also on the speed and the orientation of the peer RP. The system is not used as a therapeutic tool per se but as facilitator and mediator of social dynamics during normal therapy to counteract social isolation that can result in dementia through the loss of social skills. An experiment is reported showing that using the RPs the patients participated in the activity, coordinating their behaviour with the therapist and imitating the same interaction patterns generated by the therapist

    Design and Implementation of a Modular Human-Robot Interaction Framework

    With the increasing longevity that accompanies advances in medical technology comes a host of other age-related disabilities. Among these are neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer\u27s disease, Parkinson\u27s disease, and stroke, which significantly reduce the motor and cognitive ability of affected individuals. As these diseases become more prevalent, there is a need for further research and innovation in the field of motor rehabilitation therapy to accommodate these individuals in a cost-effective manner. In recent years, the implementation of social agents has been proposed to alleviate the burden on in-home human caregivers. Socially assistive robotics (SAR) is a new subfield of research derived from human-robot interaction that aims to provide hands-off interventions for patients with an emphasis on social rather than physical interaction. As these SAR systems are very new within the medical field, there is no standardized approach to developing such systems for different populations and therapeutic outcomes. The primary aim of this project is to provide a standardized method for developing such systems by introducing a modular human-robot interaction software framework upon which future implementations can be built. The framework is modular in nature, allowing for a variety of hardware and software additions and modifications, and is designed to provide a task-oriented training structure with augmented feedback given to the user in a closed-loop format. The framework utilizes the ROS (Robot Operating System) middleware suite which supports multiple hardware interfaces and runs primarily on Linux operating systems. These design requirements are validated through testing and analysis of two unique implementations of the framework: a keyboard input reaction task and a reaching-to-grasp task. These implementations serve as example use cases for the framework and provide a template for future designs. This framework will provide a means to streamline the development of future SAR systems for research and rehabilitation therapy

    Smart Computing and Sensing Technologies for Animal Welfare: A Systematic Review

    Animals play a profoundly important and intricate role in our lives today. Dogs have been human companions for thousands of years, but they now work closely with us to assist the disabled, and in combat and search and rescue situations. Farm animals are a critical part of the global food supply chain, and there is increasing consumer interest in organically fed and humanely raised livestock, and how it impacts our health and environmental footprint. Wild animals are threatened with extinction by human induced factors, and shrinking and compromised habitat. This review sets the goal to systematically survey the existing literature in smart computing and sensing technologies for domestic, farm and wild animal welfare. We use the notion of \emph{animal welfare} in broad terms, to review the technologies for assessing whether animals are healthy, free of pain and suffering, and also positively stimulated in their environment. Also the notion of \emph{smart computing and sensing} is used in broad terms, to refer to computing and sensing systems that are not isolated but interconnected with communication networks, and capable of remote data collection, processing, exchange and analysis. We review smart technologies for domestic animals, indoor and outdoor animal farming, as well as animals in the wild and zoos. The findings of this review are expected to motivate future research and contribute to data, information and communication management as well as policy for animal welfare

    Assistive telehealth systems for neurorehabilitation

    Telehealth is an evolving field within the broader domain of Biomedical Engineering, specifically situated within the context of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). In today's society, the importance of Telehealth systems is increasingly recognized, as they enable remote patient treatment by physicians. One significant application in neurorehabilitation is Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), which has demonstrated its effectiveness in modulating mental function and learning over several years. Furthermore, tDCS is widely accepted as a safe approach in the field. This presentation focuses on the development of a non-invasive wearable tDCS device with integrated Internet connectivity. This IoMT device enables remote configuration of treatment parameters, such as session duration, current level, and placebo status. Clinicians can remotely access the device and define these parameters within the approved safety ranges for tDCS treatments. In addition to the wearable tDCS device, a prototype web portal is being developed to collect performance data during neurorehabilitation exercises conducted by individuals at home. This portal also facilitates remote interaction between patients and clinicians. To provide a platform-independent solution for accessing up-to-date healthcare information, a Progressive Web Application (PWA) is being developed. The PWA enables real-time communication between patients and doctors through text chat and video conferencing. The primary objective is to create a cross-platform web application with PWA features that can function effectively as a native application in various operating systems

The large repertoire of cell activities supporting behavior stems from an equally diverse range of specialized cell types, from neuron to glia. To untangle mechanisms underlying brain function, elementary processes should be dissected, from the complex machinery of signaling pathways at the level of single cells and synapses, to the intricate phenomena leading to orchestrated ensemble activity and the establishment of engrams driving memory-guided behaviors.     Systematic AI Approach for AGI: Addressing Alignment, Energy, and AGI Grand Challenges

    AI faces a trifecta of grand challenges the Energy Wall, the Alignment Problem and the Leap from Narrow AI to AGI. Contemporary AI solutions consume unsustainable amounts of energy during model training and daily operations.Making things worse, the amount of computation required to train each new AI model has been doubling every 2 months since 2020, directly translating to increases in energy consumption.The leap from AI to AGI requires multiple functional subsystems operating in a balanced manner, which requires a system architecture. However, the current approach to artificial intelligence lacks system design; even though system characteristics play a key role in the human brain from the way it processes information to how it makes decisions. Similarly, current alignment and AI ethics approaches largely ignore system design, yet studies show that the brains system architecture plays a critical role in healthy moral decisions.In this paper, we argue that system design is critically important in overcoming all three grand challenges.
