When the noise ratio is high, rank order filters, such as the median filter for example, can produce unsatisfactory results. Better results can be obtained by applying the filter twice, which we call two-pass filtering. To further improve the performance, we develop an adaptive two-pass rank order filter. Between the passes of filtering, an adaptive process is used to detect irregularities in the spatial distribution of the estimated impulse noise. The adaptive process then selectively replaces some pixels changed by the first pass of filtering with their original observed pixel values. These pixels are then kept unchanged during the second filtering. In combination, the adaptive process and the sec ond filter eliminate more impulse noise and restore some pixels that are mistakenly altered by the first filtering. As a final result, the reconstructed image maintains a higher degree of fidelity and has a smaller amount of noise. The idea of adaptive two-pass processing can be applied to many rank order filters, such as a center-weighted median filter (CWMF), adaptive CWMF, lower-upper-middle filter, and soft-decision rank-order-mean filter. Results from computer simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of this type of adaptation using a number of basic rank order filters. This work was supported in part by CenSSIS, the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems, under the Engineering Research Centers Program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) under Award EEC-9986821, by an ARO MURI on Demining under Grant DAAG55-97-1-0013, and by the NSF under Award 0208548

Image is captured or noninheritable by any image capturing device like camera or scanner and then it is stored in the mass storage of the computer system. In many of these applications the existence of impulsive noise among the noninheritable pictures is one altogether common problems. This noise is characterized by spots on the image and is usually related to the innate image because of errors in image sensors and information transmission. Now-a-days there are numerous strategies that are offered to remove noise from digital images. Most of the novel methodology includes 2 stages: the primary stage is to find the noise within the image and the second stage is to eliminate the noise from the image. This paper explores the varied novel methods for the removal of noise from the digital images. The distinctive feature of the all the described filters is that offers well line, edge and detail preservation performance while, at the constant time, effectively removing noise from the input image. In later section, we present a short introduction for various strategies for noise reduction in digital images

Partition based vector filtering technique for suppression of noise in digital color images

A partition-based adaptive vector filter is proposed for the restoration of corrupted digital color images. The novelty of the filter lies in its unique three-stage adaptive estimation. The local image structure is first estimated by a series of center-weighted reference filters. Then the distances between the observed central pixel and estimated references are utilized to classify the local inputs into one of preset structure partition cells. Finally, a weighted filtering operation, indexed by the partition cell, is applied to the estimated references in order to restore the central pixel value. The weighted filtering operation is optimized off-line for each partition cell to achieve the best tradeoff between noise suppression and structure preservation. Recursive filtering operation and recursive weight training are also investigated to further boost the restoration performance. The proposed filter has demonstrated satisfactory results in suppressing many distinct types of noise in natural color images. Noticeable performance gains are demonstrated over other prior-art methods in terms of standard objective measurements, the visual image quality and the computational complexity

Noise removal is one of the greatest challenges among the researchers, noise removal algorithms vary with the application areas and the type of images and noises. The work proposes a novel hybrid filter which is capable of predicting the best filter for every pixel using neural network and choose the best technique to remove noise with 3x3 mask operation. Proposed algorithm first train the neural network for various filters like mean, median, mode, geometrical mean, arithmetic mean and will use to remove noise later on. Later, the proposed method is compared with the existing techniques using the parameters MAE, PSNR, MSE and IEF. The experimental result shows that proposed method gives better performance in comparison with MF, AMF and other existing noise removal algorithms and improves the values of various parameter

An Effective Noise Adaptive Median Filter for Removing High Density Impulse Noises in Color Images

Images are normally degraded by some form of impulse noises during the acquisition, transmission and storage in the physical media. Most of the real time applications usually require bright and clear images, hence distorted or degraded images need to be processed to enhance easy identification of image details and further works on the image. In this paper we have analyzed and tested the number of existing median filtering algorithms and their limitations. As a result we have proposed a new effective noise adaptive median filtering algorithm, which removes the impulse noises in the color images while preserving the image details and enhancing the image quality. The proposed method is a spatial domain approach and uses the 3×3 overlapping window to filter the signal based on the correct selection of neighborhood values to obtain the effective median per window. The performance of the proposed effective median filter has been evaluated using MATLAB, simulations on a both gray scale and color images that have been subjected to high density of corruption up to 90% with impulse noises. The results expose the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm when compared with the quantitative image metrics such as PSNR, MSE, RMSE, IEF, Time and SSIM of existing standard and adaptive median filtering algorithms

An Efficient Approach of Removing the High Density Salt

Images are often corrupted by impulse noise, also known as salt and pepper noise. Salt and pepper noise can corrupt the images where the corrupted pixel takes either maximum or minimum gray level. Amongst these standard median filter has been established as reliable - method to remove the salt and pepper noise without harming the edge details. However, the major problem of standard Median Filter (MF) is that the filter is effective only at low noise densities. When the noise level is over 50% the edge details of the original image will not be preserved by standard median filter. Adaptive Median Filter (AMF) performs well at low noise densities. In our proposed method, first we apply the Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) for noise added image. It will separate into four bands like LL, LH, HL and HH. Further, we calculate the window size 3x3 for LL band image by Reading the pixels from the window, computing the minimum, maximum and median values from inside the window. Then we find out the noise and noise free pixels inside the window by applying our algorithm which replaces the noise pixels. The higher bands are smoothing by soft thresholding method. Then all the coefficients are decomposed by inverse stationary wavelet transform. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested for various levels of noise corruption and compared with standard filters namely standard median filter (SMF), weighted median filter (WMF). Our proposed method performs well in removing low to medium density impulse noise with detail preservation up to a noise density of 70% and it gives better Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean square error (MSE) values

A Study on Development of Optimal Noise Filter Algorithm for Laser Vision System in GMA Welding

AbstractIn recent years, noise filter of image processing have been widely used in automated manufacturing processes in noisy environment, such as removal of noise in arc welding process, because such filters are robust even in the presence of extreme noise. Since arc, soot and splash etc., salt noise which has certain noise amplitude at random location was found in captured image. It is important to employ a noise filter to intensify the laser lines and ultimately remove or reduce the noise. In this study, the welding seam image captured from the CCD camera was processed by noise filters to remove the noise due to the complexity of welding environment. Comparison of three noise filters (Gaussian filter, Median filter and Wiener filter) was made to find out the optimal noise filtering algorithm. The result showed that the Median filter algorithm is the preferred method, as not only this algorithm performance provided lower MSE (Mean Square Error) and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) values than those of Gaussian filter and Wiener filter, but also the values of the PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) were higher. Therefore, the Median filter can be considered to have a better enhancement effect than the other two filters
