CFA optimizer: A new and powerful algorithm inspired by Franklin's and Coulomb's laws theory for solving the economic load dispatch problems
Copyright Ā© 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This paper presents a new efficient algorithm inspired by Franklin's and Coulomb's laws theory that is referred to as CFA algorithm, for finding the global solutions of optimal economic load dispatch problems in power systems. CFA is based on the impact of electrically charged particles on each other due to electrical attraction and repulsion forces. The effectiveness of the CFA in different terms is tested on basic benchmark problems. Then, the quality of the CFA to achieve accurate results in different aspects is examined and proven on economic load dispatch problems including 4 different size cases, 6, 10, 15, and 110-unit test systems. Finally, the results are compared with other inspired algorithms as well as results reported in the literature. The simulation results provide evidence for the well-organized and efficient performance of the CFA algorithm in solving great diversity of nonlinear optimization problems
A hybrid Jaya algorithm for reliabilityāredundancy allocation problems
Ā© 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This article proposes an efficient improved hybrid Jaya algorithm based on time-varying acceleration coefficients (TVACs) and the learning phase introduced in teachingālearning-based optimization (TLBO), named the LJaya-TVAC algorithm, for solving various types of nonlinear mixed-integer reliabilityāredundancy allocation problems (RRAPs) and standard real-parameter test functions. RRAPs include series, seriesāparallel, complex (bridge) and overspeed protection systems. The search power of the proposed LJaya-TVAC algorithm for finding the optimal solutions is first tested on the standard real-parameter unimodal and multi-modal functions with dimensions of 30ā100, and then tested on various types of nonlinear mixed-integer RRAPs. The results are compared with the original Jaya algorithm and the best results reported in the recent literature. The optimal results obtained with the proposed LJaya-TVAC algorithm provide evidence for its better and acceptable optimization performance compared to the original Jaya algorithm and other reported optimal results
Hybrid nature-inspired computation methods for optimization
The focus of this work is on the exploration of the hybrid Nature-Inspired Computation (NIC) methods with application in optimization. In the dissertation, we first study various types of the NIC algorithms including the Clonal Selection Algorithm (CSA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Simulated Annealing (SA), Harmony Search (HS), Differential Evolution (DE), and Mind Evolution Computing (MEC), and propose several new fusions of the NIC techniques, such as CSA-DE, HS-DE, and CSA-SA. Their working principles, structures, and algorithms are analyzed and discussed in details. We next investigate the performances of our hybrid NIC methods in handling nonlinear, multi-modal, and dynamical optimization problems, e.g., nonlinear function optimization, optimal LC passive power filter design, and optimization of neural networks and fuzzy classification systems. The hybridization of these NIC methods can overcome the shortcomings of standalone algorithms while still retaining all the advantages. It has been demonstrated using computer simulations that the proposed hybrid NIC approaches are capable of yielding superior optimization performances over the individual NIC methods as well as conventional methodologies with regard to the search efficiency, convergence speed, and quantity and quality of the optimal solutions achieved

Multi particle swarm optimisation algorithm applied to supervisory power control systems
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonPower quality problems come in numerous forms (commonly spikes, surges, sags, outages and harmonics) and their resolution can cost from a few hundred to millions of pounds, depending on the size and type of problem experienced by the power network. They are commonly experienced as burnt-out motors, corrupt data on hard drives, unnecessary downtime and increased maintenance costs. In order to minimise such events, the network can be monitored and controlled with a specific control regime to deal with particular faults. This study developed a control and Optimisation system and applied it to the stability of electrical power networks using artificial intelligence techniques. An intelligent controller was designed to control and optimise simulated models for electrical system power stability. Fuzzy logic controller controlled the power generation, while particle swarm Optimisation (PSO) techniques optimised the systemās power quality in normal operation conditions and after faults. Different types of PSO were tested, then a multi-swarm (M-PSO) system was developed to give better Optimisation results in terms of accuracy and convergence speed.. The developed Optimisation algorithm was tested on seven benchmarks and compared to the other types of single PSOs.
The developed controller and Optimisation algorithm was applied to power system stability control. Two power electrical network models were used (with two and four generators), controlled by fuzzy logic controllers tuned using the Optimisation algorithm. The system selected the optimal controller parameters automatically for normal and fault conditions during the operation of the power network. Multi objective cost function was used based on minimising the recovery time, overshoot, and steady state error. A supervisory control layer was introduced to detect and diagnose faults then apply the correct controller parameters. Different fault scenarios were used to test the system performance. The results indicate the great potential of the proposed power system stabiliser as a superior tool compared to conventional control systems
Optimalna lokacija i parametri za FACT ureÄaj za kompenzaciju reaktivne snage koristeÄi algoritam harmonijskog pretraživanja
Reactive Power Compensation (RPC) is an important issue in the operation and control of power system. In this paper, two FACTS controller like Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) are considered for RPC. RPC is a multi-objective nonlinear optimization problem that minimizes the bus voltage deviation and real power loss. In this work, Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) is used to determine the optimal location and setting of SVC and TCSC respectively. The efficacy of HSA is demonstrated on modified IEEE 30 bus power system for two operating conditions. A comparison of simulation results reveals the effectiveness of proposed algorithm over other well established population based optimization technique like Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA),Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE).Kompenzacija reaktivne snage (RPC) važan je zadatak pri radu i upravljanju energetskim sustavima. Harmony Search Method: Theory and Applications
The Harmony Search (HS) method is an emerging metaheuristic optimization algorithm, which has been employed to cope with numerous challenging tasks during the past decade. In this paper, the essential theory and applications of the HS algorithm are first described and reviewed. Several typical variants of the original HS are next briefly explained. As an example of case study, a modified HS method inspired by the idea of Pareto-dominance-based ranking is also presented. It is further applied to handle a practical wind generator optimal design problem
Stability Analysis of Artificial Bee Colony Optimization Algorithm
Theoretical analysis of swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms is relatively less explored area of research. Stability and convergence analysis of swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms can help the researchers to fine tune the parameter values. This paper presents the stability analysis of a famous Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) optimization algorithm using von Neumann stability criterion for two-level finite difference scheme. Parameter selection for the ABC algorithm is recommended based on the obtained stability conditions. The findings are also validated through numerical experiments on test problems
A Novel Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization and Sine Cosine Algorithm for Seismic Optimization of Retaining Structures
This study introduces an effective hybrid optimization algorithm, namely Particle Swarm Sine Cosine Algorithm (PSSCA) for numerical function optimization and automating optimum design of retaining structures under seismic loads. The new algorithm employs the dynamic behavior of sine and cosine functions in the velocity updating operation of particle swarm optimization (PSO) to achieve faster convergence and better accuracy of final solution without getting trapped in local minima. The proposed algorithm is tested over a set of 16 benchmark functions and the results are compared with other well-known algorithms in the field of optimization. For seismic optimization of retaining structure, Mononobe-Okabe method is employed for dynamic loading condition and total construction cost of the structure is considered as the objective function. Finally, optimization of two retaining structures under static and seismic loading are considered from the literature. As results demonstrate, the PSSCA is superior and it could generate better optimal solutions compared with other competitive algorithms
A New Fusion of Salp Swarm with Sine Cosine for Optimization of Non-linear Functions
The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. The foremost objective of this article is to develop a novel hybrid powerful meta-heuristic that integrates the Salp Swarm Algorithm with Sine Cosine Algorithm (called HSSASCA) for improving the convergence performance with the exploration and exploitation being superior to other comparative standard algorithms. In this method, the position of salp swarm in the search space is updated by using the position equations of sine cosine; hence the best and possible optimal solutions are obtained based on the sine or cosine function. During this process, each salp adopts the information sharing strategy of sine and cosine functions to improve their exploration and exploitation ability. The inspiration behind incorporating changes in Salp Swarm Optimizer Algorithm is to assist the basic approach to avoid premature convergence and to rapidly guide the search towards the probable search
space. The algorithm is validated on twenty-two standard mathematical optimization functions and three applications namely the three-bar truss, tension/compression spring and cantilever beam design problems. The aim is to examine and confirm the valuable behaviors of HSSASCA in searching the best solutions for optimization functions. The experimental results reveal that HSSASCA algorithm achieves the highest accuracies with least runtime in comparison with the others
