    Indoor Positioning with GNSS-Like Local Signal Transmitters

    Not all the techniques proposed have, of course, been based on radio techniques, but they are the most important ones for two main reasons: their level of development and maturity on the one hand and their ability to "cross" or to "get around" obstacles such as walls, furniture or people on the other hand. Optical based techniques, like laser based distance measurements or vision based (camera) scene analysis systems present some real advantages in terms of measurement accuracy (a few millimetres for the former) or orientation determination (very useful for any guidance system, available for the latter). Unfortunately, the foreseen use of positioning devices being mainly dedicated to pedestrians in urban environments, optical obstacles are numerous. These latter techniques are then considered as potential hybridisation candidates. Many types of sensors have also been studied for positioning, such as infrared or ultrasound. Once again, although accuracy can reach centimetre values, the environmental constraints are not compatible with the ubiquitous systems being sought. Another category is, of course, inertial systems which could be a valuable alternative to radio systems: time and distance associated position drifts are not yet sufficiently mastered and the given positioning is relative , which means the need for "something else" in order to provide the user with an absolute location.     Behind-wall target detection using micro-doppler effects

    Abstract: During the last decade technology for seeing through walls and through dense vegetation has interested many researchers. This technology offers excellent opportunities for military and police applications, though applications are not limited to the military and police; they go beyond those applications to where detecting a target behind an obstacle is needed. To be able to disclose the location and velocity of obscured targets, scientists’ resort to electromagnetic wave propagation. Thus, through-the-wall radar (TWR) is technology used to propagate electromagnetic waves towards a target through a wall. Though TWR is a promising technology, it has been reported that TWR imaging (TWRI) poses a range of ambiguities in target characterisation and detection. These ambiguities are related to the thickness and electric properties of walls. It has been reported that the mechanical and electric properties of the wall defocus the target image rendered by the radar. The defocusing problem is the phenomenon of displacing the target away from its true location when the image is rendered. Thus, the operator of the TWR will have a wrong position, not the real position of the target. Defocusing is not the only problem observed while the signal is travelling through the wall.     SECURE TRACKING SYSTEM FOR NEXT GENERATION CIT PRODUCTS

    The Cash in Transit (CIT) industry demands reliable and innovative products from its suppliers to ensure safety and reliability within the industry. Product innovation has been directed at a bespoke tracking system for the Cash in Transit industry, which can meet its stringent requirements and excel above the capabilities of standard, readily available tracking systems. The presented research has investigated the state of the art in tracking and localisation systems and has highlighted Wi-Fi as a potential novel Cash in Transit tracking solution. With research into 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and the effects in a CIT environment, the technology has been understood and demonstrated in terms of its advantages and weaknesses when applied to CIT. The research has shown that 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is a novel and viable solution for both wide area tracking and localised tracking of a Cash in Transit security box by testing innovative ways of detecting theft using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi in a set of specific real-world scenarios. An embedded tracking system was developed and a thorough evaluation undertaken using a series of practical usage scenarios. The results show the proposed tracking capability is very effective and ready for initial effective use within a Cash in Transit security box

    Élargir la couverture des services du réseau aux endroits difficiles et aux régions éloignées est un besoin de plus en plus nécessaire de nos vies quotidiennes actuelles et futures. L'augmentation de la population et la demande accrue de services et de solutions de communication requièrent l'augmentation de la capacité des moyens de communication tout en permettant une couverture plus efficiente et plus étendue des territoires et régions faiblement peuplées dans le Canada et dans monde. Des études récentes ont confirmé que des interférences comme les interférences dans le même canal (ICC) et les interférences mutuelles (SI) ont un impact énorme sur les systèmes de communication sans fil et peuvent entraîner une dégradation significative des performances. Les techniques de relayage, dans lesquelles une source émettrice communique avec un récepteur destinataire l'aide d'un noeud intermédiaire, ont été introduites comme des solutions pour répondre au besoin croissant de débits plus élevés et de couverture étendu pour les communications sans fil. En tant que tel, il est essentiel de concevoir des systèmes de relais capables non seulement d'offrir une grande efficacité spectrale du signal radio, mais aussi de bénéficier pleinement des facilités de la diversité antennaire. Pour répondre à cet objectif, ce mémoire présente une étude sur une technique originale de réduction et d'annulation des interférences induite par un relayage quasi instantané sur un même signal radio en utilisant les antennes multiples du relais. Transmettre et recevoir simultanément le même signal radio au niveau du relais, créent une auto-interférence en raison des signaux de bouclage. Le défi principal de la mise en oeuvre du relais est d'atténuer et d'annuler la destruction ou la perte de l'information relayée. L'originalité de du travail réside dans la proposition d'un algorithme efficace utilisant une double projection 1 'une à 1' entrée du relais et une autre à la sortie du relais. Les résultats obtenus démontrent une réduction significative des interférences comparativement à d'autres travaux

    Design and development of wireless underground sensor networks for pipeline monitoring

    Infrastructure monitoring, and specifically pipeline monitoring (e.g. water supply systems), is becoming crucial in order to achieve improved asset management and a more sustainable future. However, different drawbacks in existing methods of monitoring have prevented them from being widely used on water distribution systems. In this research a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art in pipeline monitoring is presented and the advantages and disadvantages of each of these methods are discussed in detail. An ultra-low power Wireless Underground Sensor Network (WUSN) has been carefully researched, designed, developed and presented as part of this project. In addition, a novel non-invasive (to the pipe) relative pressure sensor assembly has been designed, modelled and developed based on Force Sensitive Resistors (FSR). The performance of this sensor is validated by comparison with commercial pressure sensors, and both laboratory and field trials. In this research existing models for RF transmission are reviewed and compared with measurements from field trials. In addition a modification to an existing method of extracting real and imaginary parts of permittivity is proposed in order to improve the accuracy of the existing RF propagation models
