Content-driven design and architecture of E-learning applications
E-learning applications combine content with learning technology systems to support the creation of content and its delivery to the learner. In the future, we can expect the distinction between learning content and its supporting infrastructure to become blurred. Content objects will interact with infrastructure services as independent objects. Our solution to the development of e-learning applications â content-driven design and architecture â is based on content-centric ontological modelling and development of architectures. The emerging trends for e-business engineering revolve around specialisation and cooperation. Successful companies focus on their core competencies and rely on a network of business partners for the support services required to compose a comprehensive offer for their customers. Modularity is crucial for a flexible e-business infrastructure, but related requirements seldom reflect on the design and operational models of business information systems. Software components are widely used for the implementation of e-business applications, with proven benefits in terms of system development and maintenance. We propose a service-oriented componentisation of e-business systems as a way to close the gap with the business models they support. Blurring the distinction between external services and internal capabilities, we propose a homogeneous model for the definition of e-business applications components and present a process-based technique for component modelling. We finally present an Enterprise Java Beans extension that implements the model
New trends on urban goods movement: Modelling and simulation of e-commerce distribution
In this paper, a modelling framework to complete the recent scientific works on urban goods modelling is proposed. More precisely, we introduce a substitution procedure that estimates the number of trips and the corresponding travelled distances for shopping drive, home delivery and reception points' strategies. Moreover, an appraisal of scenarios is proposed in order to study how these three new forms of proximity delivery services impact on the overall urban goods movement distribution. Starting from four extreme situations, we introduce more realistic scenarios in order to find a suitable combination of delivery strategies. All the scenarios are simulated using the proposed framework, and the main traffic issues related to e-commerce distribution channel are discussed. The best realistic combination promotes the joint usage of home deliveries and proximity reception points and allows a reduction of about 13% of the road occupancy rates in urban areas.urban goods movement, modelling, shopping trips, e-commerce

Modelling the determinants of electronic tax filing servicesâ continuance usage intention
The success of electronic filing services largely depends
on their continuance usage. This study examines the
factors affecting the continuance usage intention of the
online tax filing services in Mauritius. An integrated
model comprising Trust Theory and Information System
Success Model (ISSM) is applied to assess the continuance
usage behaviour of e-filing systems. The model
has been extended by adding two additional variables:
Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Risk. The model
was tested using a sample of 315 users of e-filing services
in Mauritius. A structural equation modelling
technique using partial least square structural equation
modelling verified the hypotheses. The results reveal
that the continuance usage intention of an electronic
tax filing system is influenced by Perceived Usefulness,
User Satisfaction, and Service Quality. However, Perceived
Risk does not influence the continuance usage
intention of e-filing systems since the importance of Perceived
Risk diminishes as trust in the e-service provider
increases. The theoretical and practical implications
derived fromthe findings of this study are also discussed. This paper makes several contributions to the literature

A simulation tool for better management of retinal services
Background: Advances in the management of retinal diseases have been fast-paced as new treatments become available, resulting in increasing numbers of patients receiving treatment in hospital retinal services. These patients require frequent and long-term follow-up and repeated treatments, resulting in increased pressure on clinical workloads. Due to limited clinic capacity, many National Health Service (NHS) clinics are failing to maintain recommended follow-up intervals for patients receiving care. As such, clear and robust, long term retinal service models are required to assess and respond to the needs of local populations, both currently and in the future. Methods: A discrete event simulation (DES) tool was developed to facilitate the improvement of retinal services by identifying efficiencies and cost savings within the pathway of care. For a mid-size hospital in England serving a population of over 500,000, we used 36 months of patient level data in conjunction with statistical forecasting and simulation to predict the impact of making changes within the service. Results: A simulation of increased demand and a potential solution of the 'Treat and Extend' (T&E) regimen which is reported to result in better outcomes, in combination with virtual clinics which improve quality, effectiveness and productivity and thus increase capacity is presented. Without the virtual clinic, where T&E is implemented along with the current service, we notice a sharp increase in the number of follow-ups, number of Anti-VEGF injections, and utilisation of resources. In the case of combining T&E with virtual clinics, there is a negligible (almost 0%) impact on utilisation of resources. Conclusions: Expansion of services to accommodate increasing number of patients seen and treated in retinal services is feasible with service re-organisation. It is inevitable that some form of initial investment is required to implement service expansion through T&E and virtual clinics. However, modelling with DES indicates that such investment is outweighed by cost reductions in the long term as more patients receive optimal treatment and retain vision with better outcomes. The model also shows that the service will experience an average of 10% increase in surplus capacity.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Multi-process modelling approach to complex organisation design
Present day markets require manufacturing enterprises (MEs) to be designed and run in a flexibly
structured yet optimised way. However, contemporary approaches to ME engineering do not
enable this requirement to capture ME attributes such that suitable processes, resource systems
and support services can be readily implemented and changed.
This study has developed and prototyped a model-driven environment for the design,
optimisation and control of MEs with an embedded capability to handle various types of change.
This so called Enriched-Process Modelling (E-MPM) Environment can support the engineering
of strategic, tactical and operational processes and comprises two parts: (1) an E-MPM Method
that informs, structures, and guides modelling activities required at different stages of ME
systems design; and (2) an E-MPM Modelling Framework that specifies interconnections between
modelling concepts necessary for the design and run time operation of ME systems. [Continues.
The effects of website quality on adoption of e-government service : an empirical study applying UTAUT model using SEM
In today’s global age, e-government services have become the main channel for online communication between the government and its citizens. They aim to provide citizens with more accessible, accurate, real-time and high quality services. Therefore, the quality of government websites which provide e-services is an essential factor in the successful adoption of e-government services by the public. This paper discusses an investigation of the effect of the Website Quality (WQ) factor on the acceptance of using e-government services (G2C) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) by adopting the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Model. Survey Data collected from 400 respondents were examined using the structural equation modelling (SEM) technique and utilising AMOS tools. This study found that the factors that significantly influenced the Use Behaviour of e-government services in KSA (USE) include Performance Expectancy (PE), Effort expectancy (EE), Facilitating Conditions (FC) and Website Quality (WQ), while the construct known Social Influence (SI) did not. Moreover, the results confirm the importance of quality government websites and support systems as one of the main significant and influential factors of e-government services adoption. The results of this study can be helpful to Saudi’s governmental sectors to adjust their corporate strategies and plans to advance successful adoption and diffusion of e-government services (G2C) in KSA.<br /
