Influence of Intrapredatory Interferences on Impulsive Biological Control Efficiency

International audienceIn this paper, a model is proposed for the biological control of a pest by its natural predator. The model incorporates a qualitative description of intrapredatory interference whereby predator density decreases the per capita predation efficiency and generalises the classical Beddington-DeAngelis formulation. A pair of coupled ordinary differential equations are used, augmented by a discrete component to depict the periodic release of a fixed number of predators into the system. This number is defined in terms of the rate of predator release and the frequency at which the releases are to be carried out. This formulation allows us to compare different biological control strategies in terms of release size and frequency that involve the same overall number of predators. The stability properties of the zero-pest solution are analysed. We obtain an upper bound on the interference strength (the biological condition) and a minimal bound on the predator release rate (the managerial condition) required to eradicate a pest population. We demonstrate that increasing the frequency of releases reduces this minimal rate and also increases the rate of convergence of the system to the zero-pest solution for a given release rate. Additionally, we show that other conclusions are to be expected if the interferences between predators have weaker or stronger effects than the generalised Beddington-DeAngelis formulation proposed in this paper

The sterile insect technique in a predator-prey system with monotone functional response

In this paper, we focus on the sterile insect release technique (SIRT) in a predator--prey system with monotone functional response. Unlike most of the existing modeling studies in this field that mainly deal with the pest population only, we have incorporated the predation population as a distinct dynamical equation together with the wild and sterile insect pests. The aim is to investigate the influence of the predation on the SIRT. We use both the continuous model and the impulsive model to carry out a theoretical study, discuss the dynamical behaviour of the model, and compute the critical conditions for eradication of wild insects. We get that both kinds of the predator-prey system with the most popular functional responses Holling type II and III and some other monotone response functions always have the wild insects eradication solution under the certain conditions. Our analytical findings are verified through computer simulation

Use of baited remote underwater video (BRUV) and motion analysis for studying the impacts of underwater noise upon free ranging fish and implications for marine energy management

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd Free-ranging individual fish were observed using a baited remote underwater video (BRUV) system during sound playback experiments. This paper reports on test trials exploring BRUV design parameters, image analysis and practical experimental designs. Three marine species were exposed to playback noise, provided as examples of behavioural responses to impulsive sound at 163–171 dB re 1 μPa (peak-to-peak SPL) and continuous sound of 142.7 dB re 1 μPa (RMS, SPL), exhibiting directional changes and accelerations. The methods described here indicate the efficacy of BRUV to examine behaviour of free-ranging species to noise playback, rather than using confinement. Given the increasing concern about the effects of water-borne noise, for example its inclusion within the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and the lack of empirical evidence in setting thresholds, this paper discusses the use of BRUV, and short term behavioural changes, in supporting population level marine noise management

Dynamic analysis of a Leslie–Gower-type predator–prey system with the fear effect and ratio-dependent Holling III functional response

In this paper, we extend a Leslie–Gower-type predator–prey system with ratio-dependent Holling III functional response considering the cost of antipredator defence due to fear. We study the impact of the fear effect on the model, and we find that many interesting dynamical properties of the model can occur when the fear effect is present. Firstly, the relationship between the fear coefficient K and the positive equilibrium point is introduced. Meanwhile, the existence of the Turing instability, the Hopf bifurcation, and the Turing–Hopf bifurcation are analyzed by some key bifurcation parameters. Next, a normal form for the Turing–Hopf bifurcation is calculated. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to corroborate our theoretical results

Finite-Time Stability Analysis and Control for a Class of Stochastic Singular Biological Economic Systems Based on T-S Fuzzy Model

This paper studies the problem of finite-time stability and control for a class of stochastic singular biological economic systems. It shows that such systems exhibit the distinct dynamic behavior when the economic profit is a variable rather than a constant. Firstly, the stochastic singular biological economic systems are established as fuzzy models based on T-S fuzzy control approach. These models are described by stochastic singular T-S fuzzy systems. Then, novel sufficient conditions of finite-time stability are obtained for the stochastic singular biological economic systems, and the state feedback controller is designed so that the population (state of the systems) can be driven to the bounded range by the management of the open resource. Finally, by using Matlab software, numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results
