General Model for Infrastructure Multi-channel Wireless LANs
In this paper we develop an integrated model for request mechanism and data
transmission in multi-channel wireless local area networks. We calculated the
performance parameters for single and multi-channel wireless networks when the
channel is noisy. The proposed model is general it can be applied to different
wireless networks such as IEEE802.11x, IEEE802.16, CDMA operated networks and

Comparative Analysis of Location Management Schemes in Wireless ATM Networks
Mobility is the cornerstone of wireless networks. Supporting mobility
requires some form of tracking to locate mobile terminals within the network. In
the wireline ATM network, the terminal is fixed and the terminal is located by
identifying the terminal and following the routing information provided at each
switch along the path. As terminals become mobile, the path to the mobile becomes
dynamic; the terminal and the path are no longer synonymous. Signalling traffic
incurred in tracking mobile users and delivering enhanced services causes an
additional load in the Wireless ATM (WArM) network. Efficient database and
location management schemes are needed to meet the challenges from high density
and mobility of users, and various service scenarios.
In this thesis the three "natural" Location Management Strategies, i.e.,
Timer-Based, Location Area Based and Movement Based are studied and analysed
for a W ATM network. The model used for depicting user motion and call arrival is
Brownian motion with drift process and Poisson arrival process, respectively. The Timer-Based location management strategy is one in which the user
updates its location periodically after an "optimum" interval of time. This optimum
interval of time is based upon the user's mobility and call arrival characteristics and
is therefore best suited for that particular mobile.
In the Adaptive Location Area Based strategy, the user updates its location
on each LA boundary crossing. The size of the LA changes according to the user' s
mobility characteristics. The objective is to minimise the combined average
signalling cost of both paging and registration for each individual mobile user such
that the overall system-wide signalling cost for location tracking can be minimised
The application of forward error correction techniques in wireless ATM
Bibliography: pages 116-121.The possibility of providing wireless access to an ATM network promises nomadic users a communication tool of unparalleled power and flexibility. Unfortunately, the physical realization of a wireless A TM system is fraught with technical difficulties, not the least of which is the problem of supporting a traditional ATM protocol over a non-benign wireless link. The objective of this thesis, titled "The Application of Forward Error Correction Techniques in Wireless ATM' is to examine the feasibility of using forward error correction techniques to improve the perceived channel characteristics to the extent that the channel becomes transparent to the higher layers and allows the use of an unmodified A TM protocol over the channel. In the course of the investigation that this dissertation describes, three possible error control strategies were suggested for implementation in a generic wireless channel. These schemes used a combination of forward error correction coding schemes, automatic repeat request schemes and interleavers to combat the impact of bit errors on the performance of the link. The following error control strategies were considered : 1. A stand alone fixed rate Reed-Solomon encoder/decoder with automatic repeat request. 2. A concatenated Reed-Solomon, convolution encoder/decoder with automatic request and convolution interleaving for the convolution codec. 3. A dynamic rate encoder/decoder using either a concatenated Reed-Solomon, convolution scheme or a Reed-Solomon only scheme with variable length Reed-Solomon words

Achieving reliable and enhanced communication in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs)
A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWith the envisioned age of Internet of Things (IoTs), different aspects of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will be linked so as to advance road transportation safety, ease congestion of road traffic, lessen air pollution, improve passenger transportation comfort and significantly reduce road accidents. In vehicular networks, regular exchange of current position, direction, speed, etc., enable mobile vehicle to foresee an imminent vehicle accident and notify the driver early enough in order to take appropriate action(s) or the vehicle on its own may take adequate preventive measures to avert the looming accident. Actualizing this concept requires use of shared media access protocol that is capable of guaranteeing reliable and timely broadcast of safety messages. This dissertation investigates the use of Network Coding (NC) techniques to enrich the content of each transmission and ensure improved high reliability of the broadcasted safety messages with less number of retransmissions. A Code Aided Retransmission-based Error Recovery (CARER) protocol is proposed. In order to avoid broadcast storm problem, a rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric η, is developed, which is used to select a vehicle that will rebroadcast the received encoded message. Although the proposed CARER protocol demonstrates an impressive performance, the level of incurred overhead is fairly high due to the use of complex rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric. To resolve this issue, a Random Network Coding (RNC) and vehicle clustering based vehicular communication scheme with low algorithmic complexity, named Reliable and Enhanced Cooperative Cross-layer MAC (RECMAC) scheme, is proposed. The use of this clustering technique enables RECMAC to subdivide the vehicular network into small manageable, coordinated clusters which further improve transmission reliability and minimise negative impact of network overhead. Similarly, a Cluster Head (CH) selection metric ℱ(\u1d457) is designed, which is used to determine and select the most suitably qualified candidate to become the CH of a particular cluster. Finally, in order to investigate the impact of available radio spectral resource, an in-depth study of the required amount of spectrum sufficient to support high transmission reliability and minimum latency requirements of critical road safety messages in vehicular networks was carried out. The performance of the proposed schemes was clearly shown with detailed theoretical analysis and was further validated with simulation experiments

Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2000.Future wireless networks will have to handle varying combinations of multimedia traffic that present the network with numerous quality of service (QoS) requirements. The continuously growing demand for mobile phones has resulted in radio spectrum becoming a precious resource that cannot be wasted. The current second-generation mobile networks are designed for voice communication and, even with the enhancements being implemented to accommodate data, they cannot efficiently handle the multimedia traffic demands that will be introduced in the near future. This thesis begins with a survey of existing wireless ATM (WATM) protocols, followed by an
examination of some medium access control (MAC) protocols, supporting multimedia traffic, and based on code division multiple access (CDMA) physical layers. A WATM link layer protocol based on a CDMA physical layer, and incorporating techniques from some of the surveyed protocols, is then proposed. The MAC protocol supports a wide range of service requirements by utilising a flexible scheduling algorithm that takes advantage of the graceful degradation of CDMA with increasing user interference to schedule cells for transmission according to their maximum bit error rate (BER) requirements. The data link control (DLC) accommodates the various traffic types by allowing virtual channels (VCs) to make use of forward error correction (FEc) or retransmission techniques. The proposed link layer protocol has been implemented on a Blue Wave Systems DSP board that forms part of Alcatel Altech Telecoms' software radio platform. The details and practicality of the implementation are presented. A simulation model for the protocol has been developed using MIL3 's Opnet Modeler. Hence, both simulated and measured
performance results are presented before the thesis concludes with suggestions for improvements and future work
Quality of service optimization of multimedia traffic in mobile networks
Mobile communication systems have continued to evolve beyond the currently deployed Third
Generation (3G) systems with the main goal of providing higher capacity. Systems beyond 3G
are expected to cater for a wide variety of services such as speech, data, image transmission,
video, as well as multimedia services consisting of a combination of these. With the air interface
being the bottleneck in mobile networks, recent enhancing technologies such as the High Speed
Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), incorporate major changes to the radio access segment of
3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). HSDPA introduces new features
such as fast link adaptation mechanisms, fast packet scheduling, and physical layer retransmissions
in the base stations, necessitating buffering of data at the air interface which presents a
bottleneck to end-to-end communication. Hence, in order to provide end-to-end Quality of
Service (QoS) guarantees to multimedia services in wireless networks such as HSDPA, efficient
buffer management schemes are required at the air interface.
The main objective of this thesis is to propose and evaluate solutions that will address the
QoS optimization of multimedia traffic at the radio link interface of HSDPA systems. In the
thesis, a novel queuing system known as the Time-Space Priority (TSP) scheme is proposed for
multimedia traffic QoS control. TSP provides customized preferential treatment to the constituent
flows in the multimedia traffic to suit their diverse QoS requirements. With TSP queuing, the
real-time component of the multimedia traffic, being delay sensitive and loss tolerant, is given
transmission priority; while the non-real-time component, being loss sensitive and delay tolerant,
enjoys space priority. Hence, based on the TSP queuing paradigm, new buffer managementalgorithms are designed for joint QoS control of the diverse components in a multimedia session
of the same HSDPA user. In the thesis, a TSP based buffer management algorithm known as the
Enhanced Time Space Priority (E-TSP) is proposed for HSDPA. E-TSP incorporates flow
control mechanisms to mitigate congestion in the air interface buffer of a user with multimedia
session comprising real-time and non-real-time flows. Thus, E-TSP is designed to provide
efficient network and radio resource utilization to improve end-to-end multimedia traffic
performance. In order to allow real-time optimization of the QoS control between the real-time
and non-real-time flows of the HSDPA multimedia session, another TSP based buffer management
algorithm known as the Dynamic Time Space Priority (D-TSP) is proposed. D-TSP
incorporates dynamic priority switching between the real-time and non-real-time flows. D-TSP
is designed to allow optimum QoS trade-off between the flows whilst still guaranteeing the
stringent real-time component’s QoS requirements. The thesis presents results of extensive
performance studies undertaken via analytical modelling and dynamic network-level HSDPA
simulations demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed TSP queuing system and the TSP
based buffer management schemes
