Rich Interfaces for Dependability: Compositional Methods for Dynamic Fault Trees and Arcade models
This paper discusses two behavioural interfaces for reliability analysis: dynamic fault trees, which model the system reliability in terms of the reliability of its components and Arcade, which models the system reliability at an architectural level. For both formalisms, the reliability is analyzed by transforming the DFT or Arcade model to a set of input-output Markov Chains. By using compositional aggregation techniques based on weak bisimilarity, significant reductions in the state space can be obtained
On cost-effective reuse of components in the design of complex reconfigurable systems
Design strategies that benefit from the reuse of system components can reduce costs while maintaining or increasing dependability—we use the term dependability to tie together reliability and availability. D3H2 (aDaptive Dependable Design for systems with Homogeneous and Heterogeneous redundancies) is a methodology that supports the design of complex systems with a focus on reconfiguration and component reuse. D3H2 systematizes the identification of heterogeneous redundancies and optimizes the design of fault detection and reconfiguration mechanisms, by enabling the analysis of design alternatives with respect to dependability and cost. In this paper, we extend D3H2 for application to repairable systems. The method is extended with analysis capabilities allowing dependability assessment of complex reconfigurable systems. Analysed scenarios include time-dependencies between failure events and the corresponding reconfiguration actions. We demonstrate how D3H2 can support decisions about fault detection and reconfiguration that seek to improve dependability while reducing costs via application to a realistic railway case study
Integrated Safety and Security Risk Assessment Methods: A Survey of Key Characteristics and Applications
Over the last years, we have seen several security incidents that compromised
system safety, of which some caused physical harm to people. Meanwhile, various
risk assessment methods have been developed that integrate safety and security,
and these could help to address the corresponding threats by implementing
suitable risk treatment plans. However, an overarching overview of these
methods, systematizing the characteristics of such methods, is missing. In this
paper, we conduct a systematic literature review, and identify 7 integrated
safety and security risk assessment methods. We analyze these methods based on
5 different criteria, and identify key characteristics and applications. A key
outcome is the distinction between sequential and non-sequential integration of
safety and security, related to the order in which safety and security risks
are assessed. This study provides a basis for developing more effective
integrated safety and security risk assessment methods in the future
QuantUM: Quantitative Safety Analysis of UML Models
When developing a safety-critical system it is essential to obtain an
assessment of different design alternatives. In particular, an early safety
assessment of the architectural design of a system is desirable. In spite of
the plethora of available formal quantitative analysis methods it is still
difficult for software and system architects to integrate these techniques into
their every day work. This is mainly due to the lack of methods that can be
directly applied to architecture level models, for instance given as UML
diagrams. Also, it is necessary that the description methods used do not
require a profound knowledge of formal methods. Our approach bridges this gap
and improves the integration of quantitative safety analysis methods into the
development process. All inputs of the analysis are specified at the level of a
UML model. This model is then automatically translated into the analysis model,
and the results of the analysis are consequently represented on the level of
the UML model. Thus the analysis model and the formal methods used during the
analysis are hidden from the user. We illustrate the usefulness of our approach

Integrating model checking with HiP-HOPS in model-based safety analysis
The ability to perform an effective and robust safety analysis on the design of modern safety–critical systems is crucial. Model-based safety analysis (MBSA) has been introduced in recent years to support the assessment of complex system design by focusing on the system model as the central artefact, and by automating the synthesis and analysis of failure-extended models. Model checking and failure logic synthesis and analysis (FLSA) are two prominent MBSA paradigms. Extensive research has placed emphasis on the development of these techniques, but discussion on their integration remains limited. In this paper, we propose a technique in which model checking and Hierarchically Performed Hazard Origin and Propagation Studies (HiP-HOPS) – an advanced FLSA technique – can be applied synergistically with benefit for the MBSA process. Model-based dependability analysis : state-of-the-art, challenges and future outlook
Abstract: Over the past two decades, the study of model-based dependability analysis has gathered significant research interest. Different approaches have been developed to automate and address various limitations of classical dependability techniques to contend with the increasing complexity and challenges of modern safety-critical system. Two leading paradigms have emerged, one which constructs predictive system failure models from component failure models compositionally using the topology of the system. The other utilizes design models - typically state automata - to explore system behaviour through fault injection. This paper reviews a number of prominent techniques under these two paradigms, and provides an insight into their working mechanism, applicability, strengths and challenges, as well as recent developments within these fields. We also discuss the emerging trends on integrated approaches and advanced analysis capabilities. Lastly, we outline the future outlook for model-based dependability analysis
