    Metamorphic Domain-Specific Languages: A Journey Into the Shapes of a Language

    External or internal domain-specific languages (DSLs) or (fluent) APIs? Whoever you are -- a developer or a user of a DSL -- you usually have to choose your side; you should not! What about metamorphic DSLs that change their shape according to your needs? We report on our 4-years journey of providing the "right" support (in the domain of feature modeling), leading us to develop an external DSL, different shapes of an internal API, and maintain all these languages. A key insight is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution or no clear superiority of a solution compared to another. On the contrary, we found that it does make sense to continue the maintenance of an external and internal DSL. The vision that we foresee for the future of software languages is their ability to be self-adaptable to the most appropriate shape (including the corresponding integrated development environment) according to a particular usage or task. We call metamorphic DSL such a language, able to change from one shape to another shape

    Numerical Integration and Dynamic Discretization in Heuristic Search Planning over Hybrid Domains

    In this paper we look into the problem of planning over hybrid domains, where change can be both discrete and instantaneous, or continuous over time. In addition, it is required that each state on the trajectory induced by the execution of plans complies with a given set of global constraints. We approach the computation of plans for such domains as the problem of searching over a deterministic state model. In this model, some of the successor states are obtained by solving numerically the so-called initial value problem over a set of ordinary differential equations (ODE) given by the current plan prefix. These equations hold over time intervals whose duration is determined dynamically, according to whether zero crossing events take place for a set of invariant conditions. The resulting planner, FS+, incorporates these features together with effective heuristic guidance. FS+ does not impose any of the syntactic restrictions on process effects often found on the existing literature on Hybrid Planning. A key concept of our approach is that a clear separation is struck between planning and simulation time steps. The former is the time allowed to observe the evolution of a given dynamical system before committing to a future course of action, whilst the later is part of the model of the environment. FS+ is shown to be a robust planner over a diverse set of hybrid domains, taken from the existing literature on hybrid planning and systems.Comment: 17 page

    BeSpaceD: Towards a Tool Framework and Methodology for the Specification and Verification of Spatial Behavior of Distributed Software Component Systems

    In this report, we present work towards a framework for modeling and checking behavior of spatially distributed component systems. Design goals of our framework are the ability to model spatial behavior in a component oriented, simple and intuitive way, the possibility to automatically analyse and verify systems and integration possibilities with other modeling and verification tools. We present examples and the verification steps necessary to prove properties such as range coverage or the absence of collisions between components and technical details

    A Universal Machine for Biform Theory Graphs

    Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of semantics-aware assistant systems for mathematics: proof assistants express the semantic in logic and emphasize deduction, and computer algebra systems express the semantics in programming languages and emphasize computation. Combining the complementary strengths of both approaches while mending their complementary weaknesses has been an important goal of the mechanized mathematics community for some time. We pick up on the idea of biform theories and interpret it in the MMTt/OMDoc framework which introduced the foundations-as-theories approach, and can thus represent both logics and programming languages as theories. This yields a formal, modular framework of biform theory graphs which mixes specifications and implementations sharing the module system and typing information. We present automated knowledge management work flows that interface to existing specification/programming tools and enable an OpenMath Machine, that operationalizes biform theories, evaluating expressions by exhaustively applying the implementations of the respective operators.     A Scala Embedded DSL for Combinatorial Optimization in Software Requirements Engineering

    The goal of the presented work is to provide support for software requirements engineering domain experts in modeling combinatorial optimization problems that arise in requirements prioritization and release planning. A Domain-Specific Language (DSL), called reqT/CSP, is presented that integrates constraints modeling with requirements modeling. The DSL is embedded in the object-functional Scala programming language. The DSL is demonstrated using principal examples of priority ranking and release planning. Benefits, limitations and future work are discussed

    Detailed Simulation of the Cochlea: Recent Progress Using Large Shared Memory Parallel Computers

    We have developed and are refining a detailed three-dimensional computational model of the human cochlea. The model uses the immersed boundary method to calculate the fluid-structure interactions produced in response to incoming sound waves. An accurate cochlear geometry obtained from physical measurements is incorporated. The model includes a detailed and realistic description of the various elastic structures present. Initially, a macro-mechanical computational model was developed for execution on a CRAY T90 at the San Diego Supercomputing Center. This code was ported to the latest generation of shared memory high performance servers from Hewlett Packard. Using compiler generated threads and OpenMP directives, we have achieved a high degree of parallelism in the executable, which has made possible to run several large scale numerical simulation experiments to study the interesting features of the cochlear system. In this paper, we outline the methods, algorithms and software tools that were used to implement and fine tune the code, and discuss some of the simulation results
