    Container-Managed ETL Applications for Integrating Data in Near Real-Time

    As the analytical capabilities and applications of e-business systems expand, providing real-time access to critical business performance indicators to improve the speed and effectiveness of business operations has become crucial. The monitoring of business activities requires focused, yet incremental enterprise application integration (EAI) efforts and balancing information requirements in real-time with historical perspectives. The decision-making process in traditional data warehouse environments is often delayed because data cannot be propagated from the source system to the data warehouse in a timely manner. In this paper, we present an architecture for a container-based ETL (extraction, transformation, loading) environment, which supports a continual near real-time data integration with the aim of decreasing the time it takes to make business decisions and to attain minimized latency between the cause and effect of a business decision. Instead of using vendor proprietary ETL solutions, we use an ETL container for managing ETLets (pronounced “et-lets”) for the ETL processing tasks. The architecture takes full advantage of existing J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) technology and enables the implementation of a distributed, scalable, near real-time ETL environment. We have fully implemented the proposed architecture. Furthermore, we compare the ETL container to alternative continuous data integration approaches

    Performance measurements of Web services

    Web services are rapidly evolving application-integration technologies that allow applications in heterogeneous environments to communicate with each other. In this thesis we perform a measurements-based study of an e-commerce application that uses web services to execute business operations. We use the TPC-W specification to generate a session-based workload. The component level response times and the hardware resource usage on the different machines are measured. The component level response times are extracted from the application server logs. From the results it is seen that as the workload increases the response times of the web services components increase. From the hardware resource usage it is clear that web service components require more processing time due to the processing of XML data required in each web service call. The method used in this thesis allows us to study the impact that different components can have on the overall performance of an application

    Attribute based component design: Supporting model driven development in CbSE

    In analysing the evolution of Software Engineering, the scale of the components has increased, the requirements for different domains become complex and a variety of different component frameworks and their associated models have emerged. Many modern component frameworks provide enterprise level facilities and services, such as instance management, and component container support, that allow developers to apply if needed to manage scale and complexity. Although the services provided by these frameworks are common, they have different models and implementation. Accordingly, the main problem is, when developing a component based application using a component framework, the design of the components becomes tightly integrated with the framework implementation and the framework model is embedded in the component functionality, and hence reduces reusability. Another problem arose is, the designers must have in-depth knowledge of the implementation of a component framework to be able to model, design and implement the components and take advantages of the services provided. To address these problems, this research proposes the Attribute based Component Design (AbCD) approach which allows developers to model software using logical and abstract components at the specification level. The components encapsulate the provided functionality, as well as the required services, runtime requirements and interaction models using a set of attributes. These attributes are systemically derived by grouping common features and services from light weight component frameworks and heavy weight component frameworks that are available in the literature. The AbCD approach consists of the AbCD Meta-model, which is an extension of the บML meta-model, and the Component Design Guidelines (CDG) that includes core Component based Software Engineering principles to assist the modelling process for designers. To support the AbCD approach, an implementation has been developed as a set of plug-ins, called the AbCD tool suite, for Eclipse IDE. An evaluation of the AbCD approach is conducted by using the tool suite with two case studies. The first case study focuses on abstraction achieved by the AbCD approach and the second focuses on reusability of the components. The evaluation shows that the artefacts produced using the approach provide an alternative architectural view to the design and help to re-factor the design based on aspects. At the same time the evaluation process identified possible improvements in the AbCD meta-model and the tool suite constructed. This research provides a non-invasive approach for designing component based software using model driven development

    An Empirical Assessment of User Perceptions of Feature versus Application Level Usage

    Users often use application software because of particular features. However, little remains known on whether user perceptions of application use is merely feature-driven or whether users perceive their application use as being more than an amalgamation of features. As the software industry ushers trends such as Web services, it becomes evermore important for vendors and users alike to clarify how users perceive features and applications. The paper is an attempt to confirm whether users can perceptively unbundle application software features from the overall applications themselves. Using a modified version of the repertory grid technique, this study investigates user perceptions of application features using data collected from users in the design and development departments across five firms. The results suggest that user perceptions of overall applications overshadow their perceptions of independent features, suggesting application-level lock-in effects and pointing out the difficulty in vendor attempts to unbundle features from feature categories and applications. The study closes with a discussion of the findings and offering cues for future research

    Automatic performance optimisation of component-based enterprise systems via redundancy

    Component technologies, such as J2EE and .NET have been extensively adopted for building complex enterprise applications. These technologies help address complex functionality and flexibility problems and reduce development and maintenance costs. Nonetheless, current component technologies provide little support for predicting and controlling the emerging performance of software systems that are assembled from distinct components. Static component testing and tuning procedures provide insufficient performance guarantees for components deployed and run in diverse assemblies, under unpredictable workloads and on different platforms. Often, there is no single component implementation or deployment configuration that can yield optimal performance in all possible conditions under which a component may run. Manually optimising and adapting complex applications to changes in their running environment is a costly and error-prone management task. The thesis presents a solution for automatically optimising the performance of component-based enterprise systems. The proposed approach is based on the alternate usage of multiple component variants with equivalent functional characteristics, each one optimized for a different execution environment. A management framework automatically administers the available redundant variants and adapts the system to external changes. The framework uses runtime monitoring data to detect performance anomalies and significant variations in the application's execution environment. It automatically adapts the application so as to use the optimal component configuration under the current running conditions. An automatic clustering mechanism analyses monitoring data and infers information on the components' performance characteristics. System administrators use decision policies to state high-level performance goals and configure system management processes. A framework prototype has been implemented and tested for automatically managing a J2EE application. Obtained results prove the framework's capability to successfully manage a software system without human intervention. The management overhead induced during normal system execution and through management operations indicate the framework's feasibility

    QoS control of E-business systems through performance modelling and estimation

    E-business systems provide the infrastructure whereby parties interact electronically via business transactions. At peak loads, these systems are susceptible to large volumes of transactions and concurrent users and yet they are expected to maintain adequate performance levels. Over provisioning is an expensive solution. A good alternative is the adaptation of the system, managing and controlling its resources. We address these concerns by presenting a model that allows fast evaluation of performance metrics in terms of measurable or controllable parameters. The model can be used in order to (a) predict the performance of a system under given or assumed loading conditions and (b) to choose the optimal configuration set-up for certain controllable parameters with respect to specified performance measures. Firstly, we analyze the characteristics of E-business systems. This analysis leads to the analytical model, which is sufficiently general to capture the behaviour of a large class of commonly encountered architectures. We propose an approximate solution which is numerically efficient and fast. By mean of simulation, we prove that its accuracy is acceptable over a wide range of system configurations and different load levels. We further evaluate the approximate solution by comparing it to a real-life E-business system. A J2EE application of non-trivial size and complexity is deployed on a 2-tier system composed of the JBoss application server and a database server. We implement an infrastructure fully integrated on the application server, capable of monitoring the E-business system and controlling its configuration parameters. Finally, we use this infrastructure to quantify both the static parameters of the model and the observed performance. The latter are then compared with the metrics predicted by the model, showing that the approximate solution is almost exact in predicting performance and that it assesses the optimal system configuration very accurately.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
