    Underwater acoustic communications and adaptive signal processing

    This dissertation proposes three new algorithms for underwater acoustic wireless communications. One is a new tail-biting circular MAP decoder for full tail-biting convolution (FTBC) codes for very short data blocks intended for Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT). The proposed algorithm was evaluated by ocean experiments and computer simulations on both Physical (PHY) and Media access control (MAC) layers. The ocean experimental results show that without channel equalization, the full tail-biting convolution (FTBC) codes with short packet lengths not only can perform similarly to zero-tailing convolution (ZTC) codes in terms of bit error rate (BER) in the PHY layer. Computer simulation results show that the FTBC codes outperform the ZTC codes in terms of MAC layer metrics, such as collision rate and bandwidth utilization, in a massive network of battery powered IoUT devices. Second, this dissertation also proposes a new approach to utilizing the underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless communication signals acquired in a real-world experiment as a tool for evaluating new coding and modulation schemes in realistic doubly spread UWA channels.     Further simulation testing in CoopMAC-U for underwater acoustic sensor networks

    In order for underwater wireless sensor networks to communicate more efficiently, MAC protocols are needed to control the use of acoustic channels. With the high propagation delay and the limited bandwidth available on the acoustic channel, a specially designed MAC protocol is needed for UWASN (Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks). In this research, the adaptation of Cooperative MAC for underwater (CoopMAC-U) will be further studied to test the protocol performance. In the previous research, CoopMAC-U was simulated yet the fairness of the transmission was not simulated and tested. In this research, CoopMAC-U will be studied further and improved. The simulation result shows that the Improved CoopMAC-U protocol produces better-normalized throughput than the initial version of CoopMAC-U. The protocol is also proven that it is backward compatible between conventional mode and cooperative mode. For offered load greater than 0.2, both the initial version of CoopMAC-U and the Improved CoopMAC-U result in stagnant normalized throughputs but the improved ones double the value of the initial version

    Analysis of MAC Strategies for Underwater Acoustic Networks

    En esta tesis presentamos los protocolos MAC diseñados para redes acústicas subacuáticas, clasificándolos en amplias categorías, proporcionando técnicas de medición de rendimiento y análisis comparativo para seleccionar el mejor algoritmo MAC para aplicaciones específicas. Floor Acquisition Multiple Access (FAMA) es un protocolo MAC que se propuso para redes acústicas submarinas como medio para resolver los problemas de terminales ocultos y expuestos. Una versión modificada, Slotted FAMA, tenía como objetivo proporcionar ahorros de energía mediante el uso de ranuras de tiempo, eliminando así la necesidad de paquetes de control excesivamente largos en FAMA. Sin embargo, se ha observado que, debido al alto retraso de propagación en estas redes, el coste de perder un ACK es muy alto y tiene un impacto significativo en el rendimiento. Los mecanismos MultiACK y EarlyACK han sido analizados para el protocolo MACA, para mejorar su eficiencia. El mecanismo MultiACK aumenta la probabilidad de recibir al menos un paquete ACK al responder con un tren de paquetes ACK, mientras que el mecanismo EarlyACK evita la repetición de todo el ciclo de contención y transmisión de datos RTS / CTS enviando un ACK temprano. En esta investigación se presenta un análisis matemático de las dos variantes, los mecanismos MultiACK y EarlyACK, en Slotted FAMA. La investigación incluye las expresiones analíticas modificadas así como los resultados numéricos. Las simulaciones se llevaron a cabo utilizando ns-3. Los resultados han sido probados y validados utilizando Excel y MATLAB. La evaluación del rendimiento de S-FAMA con dos variantes mostró un factor de mejora del 65,05% en la probabilidad de recibir un ACK correctamente utilizando el mecanismo MultiACK y del 60,58% en la prevención de la repetición del ciclo completo, con EarlyACK. El impacto de este factor de mejora en el retardo, el tamaño del paquete de datos y el rendimiento también se analiza. La energía de transmisión desperdiciada y consumida en los mecanismos MultiACK y EarlyACK se analizan y comparan con S-FAMA. El rendimiento se ha evaluado, alcanzando una mejora en ambos casos, en comparación con S-FAMA. Estos mecanismos tendrán una utilidad práctica en caso de pérdida de ACK, al ahorrar energía y tiempo en períodos críticos. Los protocolos MAC ayudan en el acceso al medio compartido y la recopilación de datos de los océanos, para monitorizar el clima y la contaminación, la prevención de catástrofes, la navegación asistida, la vigilancia estratégica y la exploración de los recursos minerales. Esta investigación beneficiará a sectores como las industrias militares, de petróleo y gas, pesquerías, compañías de instrumentación subacuática, organismos de investigación, etc. El protocolo MAC afecta la vida útil de las redes inalámbricas de sensores. La eficiencia energética de las redes acústicas submarinas se ve gravemente afectada por las propiedades típicas de la propagación de las ondas acústicas. Los largos retrasos de propagación y las colisiones de paquetes de datos dificultan la transmisión de los paquetes de datos, que contienen información útil para que los usuarios realicen tareas de supervisión colectivas. El objetivo de este estudio es proponer nuevos mecanismos para protocolos MAC diseñados para funcionar en redes acústicas submarinas, con el propósito de mejorar su rendimiento. Para alcanzar ese objetivo es necesario realizar un análisis comparativo de los protocolos existentes. Lo que además sienta un procedimiento metodológicamente correcto para realizar esa comparación. Como la comunicación subacuática depende de ondas acústicas, en el diseño de los protocolos de MAC submarinos surgen varios desafíos como latencia prolongada, ancho de banda limitado, largas demoras en la propagación, grandes tasas de error de bit, pérdidas momentáneas en las conexiones, severo efecto multicamino y desvanecimientos. Los protocolos MAC terrestres, si se implementan directamente, funcionarán de manera ineficiente

    水中環境における光学画像の画質改善に関する研究

    Since the 1960s, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) have been used for deep-sea exploration. Sonar sensors also have been extensively used to detect and recognize objects in oceans. Although sonar sensors are suitable for long-range distance imaging, due to the principles of acoustic imaging, sonar images are low signal to noise ratio, low resolution and no colors. In order to acquire more detail information of underwater object, a short-range imaging system is required. In this situation, a photo vision sensor is used reasonably.However, the low contrast and color distortion of underwater images are still the major issues for practical applications. Therefore, this thesis will concentrate on the underwater optical images quality improvement.Although the underwater optical imaging technology has made a great progress, the recognition of underwater objects is still a challenging subject nowadays. Different from the normal images, underwater images suffer from poor visibility due to the medium scattering and light distortion. First of all, capturing good quality images in underwater circumstance is difficult, mostly due to attenuation caused by light that is reflected from a surface and is deflected and scattered by particles. Secondly, absorption substantially reduces the light energy. The random attenuation of the light mainly causes the haze appearance along with the part of the light scattered back from the water. In particular, an underwater object which 10 meters away from camera lens is almost indistinguishable because of light absorption. Furthermore, when the artificial light is employed, it can cause a distinctive footprint on the seafloor.In order to obtain high quality underwater images that can be adapted to the traditional image identification algorithms, this work aimed to construct an underwater image processing framework. Due to the special characteristic of underwater images,segment the image to several parts before directly perform a subject identification is thought an efficient way. And for obtaining a good underwater image segment result, the work to improve the quality of the image is necessary. Such work contains image enhancement, color correction and noise reduction, etc. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods produced visually pleasing results, and the numerical image quality assessment also proved the effectiveness of this proposal. The organization of this thesis is as follows.Chapter 1 briefly reviews the characteristics and types of acoustic imaging and optical imaging technologies in ocean. The traditional underwater imaging models and the issues of recent underwater imaging systems are also introduced.Chapter 2 describes a novel underwater image enhancement method. The transmission is estimated by the proposed dual-channel prior. Then a robust locally adaptive filter algorithm for enhancing underwater images is used. In addition, theartificial light removal method is also proposed. Compared with the traditional methods, the proposed method obtains better images.Chapter 3 presents a color correction method to recover the distorted image colors. In the experiments, the proposed method recovers the distorted colors in real-time. The color corrected images have a reasonable noise level in their dark regions, and the global contrast is also well improved.Chapter 4 describes two methods for image segmentation. The first one is the automatic clustering Weighted Fuzzy C Means (WFCM) based segmentation method. It automatically obtains a reasonable clustering result for the underwater images with simple texture. The second method is fast Active Contour Model (ACM) based image segmentation method, which dramatically improves the calculation speed.
