    Engineering data compendium. Human perception and performance. User's guide

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use

In addition, several issues in tone reproduction are discussed: eliminatiing high frequency information invisible to scotopic (night vision) observers; representing the flare lines around stars; determining the dominant hue for the displayed image.     The effect of image size on the color appearance of image reproductions

    Original and reproduced art are usually viewed under quite different viewing conditions. One of the interesting differences in viewing condition is size difference. The main focus of this research was investigation of the effect of image size on color perception of rendered images. This research had several goals. The first goal was to develop an experimental paradigm for measuring the effect of image size on color appearance. The second goal was to identify the most affected image attributes for changes of image size. The final goal was to design and evaluate algorithms to compensate for the change of visual angle (size). To achieve the first goal, an exploratory experiment was performed using a colorimetrically characterized digital projector and LCD. The projector and LCD were light emitting devices and in this sense were similar soft-copy media. The physical sizes of the reproduced images on the LCD and projector screen could be very different. Additionally, one could benefit from flexibility of soft-copy reproduction devices such as real-time image rendering, which is essential for adjustment experiments. The capability of the experimental paradigm in revealing the change of appearance for a change of visual angle (size) was demonstrated by conducting a paired-comparison experiment. Through contrast matching experiments, achromatic and chromatic contrast and mean luminance of an image were identified as the most affected attributes for changes of image size. Measurement of the extent and trend of changes for each attribute were measured using matching experiments. Proper algorithms to compensate for the image size effect were design and evaluated. The correction algorithms were tested versus traditional colorimetric image rendering using a paired-comparison technique. The paired-comparison results confirmed superiority of the algorithms over the traditional colorimetric image rendering for the size effect compensation

    Studies in ambient intelligent lighting

    The revolution in lighting we are arguably experiencing is led by technical developments in the area of solid state lighting technology. The improved lifetime, efficiency and environmentally friendly raw materials make LEDs the main contender for the light source of the future. The core of the change is, however, not in the basic technology, but in the way users interact with it and the way the quality of the produced effect on the environment is judged. With the new found freedom the users can switch their focus from the confines of the technology to the expression of their needs, regardless of the details of the lighting system. Identifying the user needs, creating an effective language to communicate them to the system, and translating them to control signals that fulfill them, as well as defining the means to measure the quality of the produced result are the topic of study of a new multidisciplinary area of study, Ambient Intelligent Lighting. This thesis describes a series of studies in the field of Ambient Intelligent Lighting, divided in two parts. The first part of the thesis demonstrates how, by adopting a user centric design philosophy, the traditional control paradigms can be superseded by novel, so-called effect driven controls. Chapter 3 describes an algorithm that, using statistical methods and image processing, generates a set of colors based on a term or set of terms. The algorithm uses Internet image search engines (Google Images, Flickr) to acquire a set of images that represent a term and subsequently extracts representative colors from the set. Additionally, an estimate of the quality of the extracted set of colors is computed. Based on the algorithm, a system that automatically enriches music with lyrics based images and lighting was built and is described. Chapter 4 proposes a novel effect driven control algorithm, enabling users easy, natural and system agnostic means to create a spatial light distribution. By using an emerging technology, visible light communication, and an intuitive effect definition, a real time interactive light design system was developed. Usability studies on a virtual prototype of the system demonstrated the perceived ease of use and increased efficiency of an effect driven approach. In chapter 5, using stochastic models, natural temporal light transitions are modeled and reproduced. Based on an example video of a natural light effect, a Markov model of the transitions between colors of a single light source representing the effect is learned. The model is a compact, easy to reproduce, and as the user studies show, recognizable representation of the original light effect. The second part of the thesis studies the perceived quality of one of the unique capabilities of LEDs, chromatic temporal transitions. Using psychophysical methods, existing spatial models of human color vision were found to be unsuitable for predicting the visibility of temporal artifacts caused by the digital controls. The chapters in this part demonstrate new perceptual effects and make the first steps towards building a temporal model of human color vision. In chapter 6 the perception of smoothness of digital light transitions is studied. The studies presented demonstrate the dependence of the visibility of digital steps in a temporal transition on the frequency of change, chromaticity, intensity and direction of change of the transition. Furthermore, a clear link between the visibility of digital steps and flicker visibility is demonstrated. Finally, a new, exponential law for the dependence of the threshold speed of smooth transitions on the changing frequency is hypothesized and proven in subsequent experiments. Chapter 7 studies the discrimination and preference of different color transitions between two colors. Due to memory effects, the discrimination threshold for complete transitions was shown to be larger than the discrimination threshold for two single colors. Two linear transitions in different color spaces were shown to be significantly preferred over a set of other, curved, transitions. Chapter 8 studies chromatic and achromatic flicker visibility in the periphery. A complex change of both the absolute visibility thresholds for different frequencies, as well as the critical flicker frequency is observed. Finally, an increase in the absolute visibility thresholds caused by an addition of a mental task in central vision is demonstrated

    High Dynamic Range Imaging Technology.

    Abstract: In this lecture note, we describe high dynamic range (HDR) imaging systems. Such systems are able to represent luminances of much larger brightness and, typically, a larger range of colors than conventional standard dynamic range (SDR) imaging systems. The larger luminance range greatly improves the overall quality of visual content, making it appear much more realistic and appealing to observers. HDR is one of the key technologies in the future imaging pipeline, which will change the way the digital visual content is represented and manipulated today

    Preferred color correction for mixed taking-illuminant placement and cropping

    The growth of automatic layout capabilities for publications such as photo books and image sharing websites enables consumers to create personalized presentations without much experience or the use of professional page design software. Automated color correction of images has been well studied over the years, but the methodology for determining how to correct images has almost exclusively considered images as independent indivisible objects. In modern documents, such as photo books or web sharing sites, images are automatically placed on pages in juxtaposition to others and some images are automatically cropped. Understanding how color correction preferences are impacted by complex arrangements has become important. A small number of photographs taken under a variety illumination conditions were presented to observers both individually and in combinations. Cropped and uncropped versions of the shots were included. Users had opportunities to set preferred color balance and chroma for the images within the experiment. Analyses point toward trends indicating a preference for higher chroma for most cropped images in comparison to settings for the full spatial extent images. It is also shown that observers make different color balance choices when correcting an image in isolation versus when correcting the same image in the presence of a second shot taken under a different illuminant. Across 84 responses, approximately 60% showed the tendency to choose image white points that were further from the display white point when multiple images from different taking illuminants were simultaneously presented versus when the images were adjusted in isolation on the same display. Observers were also shown to preserve the relative white point bias of the original taking illuminants

    Color Layer Scissioning in See-Through Augmented Reality

    Color appearance of transparent objects is not adequately described by colorimetry or color appearance models. Despite the fact that the retinal projection of a transparent object is a combination of its color and the background, measurements of this physical combination fail to predict the saliency with which we perceive the object’s color. When the perceive color forms in the mind, awareness of their physical relationship separates the physical combination into two unique perceptions. This is known as color scissioning. In this paper a psychophysical experiment utilizing a seethrough augmented reality display to compare virtual transparent color samples to real color samples is described and confirms the scissioning effect for lightness and chroma attributes. A previous model of color scissioning for AR viewing conditions is tested against this new data and does not satisfactorily predict the observers’ perceptions. However, the model is still found to be a useful tool for analyzing the color scissioning and provides valuable insight on future research directions
