    Smart Grid Ecosystem Modeling Using a Novel Framework for Heterogenous Agent Communities

    The modeling of smart grids using multi-agent systems is a common approach due to the ability to model complex and distributed systems using an agent-based solution. However, the use of a multi-agent system framework can limit the integration of new operation and management models, especially artificial intelligence algorithms. Therefore, this paper presents a study of available open-source multi-agent systems frameworks developed in Python, as it is a growing programming language and is largely used for data analytics and artificial intelligence models. As a consequence of the presented study, the authors proposed a novel open-source multi-agent system framework built for smart grid modeling, entitled Python-based framework for heterogeneous agent communities (PEAK). This framework enables the use of simulation environments but also allows real integration at pilot sites using a real-time clock. To demonstrate the capabilities of the PEAK framework, a novel agent ecosystem based on agent communities is shown and tested. This novel ecosystem, entitled Agent-based ecosystem for Smart Grid modeling (A4SG), takes full advantage of the PEAK framework and enables agent mobility, agent branching, and dynamic agent communities.     The innovation network as a complex adaptive system: flexible multi-agent based modeling, simulation and evolutionary decision making

    The literature rarely considers an innovation network as a complex adaptive system. In this paper, theories of complex adaptive systems research are employed to model and analyze intra-organization networks, inter-organization networks as well as their interaction mechanisms in the whole innovation context, with a conceptual framework proposed and presented. Flexible multi-agent based modeling, smart simulation, self-survival and adaptive intelligent software agents, expert systems, analytic hierarchy process, hybrid decision support approach, and statistical methods are integrated to deal with the innovation network problem and support evolutionary decision making in the open and dynamic environments

    This Special Issue ""Multi-Agent Systems"" gathers original research articles reporting results on the steadily growing area of agent-oriented computing and multi-agent systems technologies. After more than 20 years of academic research on multi-agent systems (MASs), in fact, agent-oriented models and technologies have been promoted as the most suitable candidates for the design and development of distributed and intelligent applications in complex and dynamic environments. With respect to both their quality and range, the papers in this Special Issue already represent a meaningful sample of the most recent advancements in the field of agent-oriented models and technologies. In particular, the 17 contributions cover agent-based modeling and simulation, situated multi-agent systems, socio-technical multi-agent systems, and semantic technologies applied to multi-agent systems. In fact, it is surprising to witness how such a limited portion of MAS research already highlights the most relevant usage of agent-based models and technologies, as well as their most appreciated characteristics. We are thus confident that the readers of Applied Sciences will be able to appreciate the growing role that MASs will play in the design and development of the next generation of complex intelligent systems.     Mosaik and PADE: Multiagents and Co-simulation for smart grids modeling

    This paper describes the integration process between two tools in order to perform co-simulation for representation and analysis of dynamic environments in the context of smart grids. The integrated tools are Mosaik, a software to co-simulation management, and PADE, a software to multi-agent systems development. As a study case for demonstrate the integration, a scenary was utilized composed of a low voltage electricity distribution grid with 37 load bus, 20 photo-voltaic distributed generations, randomly connected to load bus, as well as, 20 PADE agents associated to distributed generation, modeling the behavior of electricity storage systems. The simulation results show the integration happening and demonstrate how useful is to model the dynamics of distributed electric resources with multi-agent systems

    A Methodology to Engineer and Validate Dynamic Multi-level Multi-agent Based Simulations

    This article proposes a methodology to model and simulate complex systems, based on IRM4MLS, a generic agent-based meta-model able to deal with multi-level systems. This methodology permits the engineering of dynamic multi-level agent-based models, to represent complex systems over several scales and domains of interest. Its goal is to simulate a phenomenon using dynamically the lightest representation to save computer resources without loss of information. This methodology is based on two mechanisms: (1) the activation or deactivation of agents representing different domain parts of the same phenomenon and (2) the aggregation or disaggregation of agents representing the same phenomenon at different scales.Comment: Presented at 3th International Workshop on Multi-Agent Based Simulation, Valencia, Spain, 5th June 201
