    A model-free control strategy for an experimental greenhouse with an application to fault accommodation

    Writing down mathematical models of agricultural greenhouses and regulating them via advanced controllers are challenging tasks since strong perturbations, like meteorological variations, have to be taken into account. This is why we are developing here a new model-free control approach and the corresponding intelligent controllers, where the need of a good model disappears. This setting, which has been introduced quite recently and is easy to implement, is already successful in many engineering domains. Tests on a concrete greenhouse and comparisons with Boolean controllers are reported. They not only demonstrate an excellent climate control, where the reference may be modified in a straightforward way, but also an efficient fault accommodation with respect to the actuators

    In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

The Lyapunov theory and backstepping method is utilized to appraise the math nonlinearity in the active vehicle suspension as well as acquire the final simulation control law in order to track the suitable signal.     The application of a new PID autotuning method for the steam/water loop in large scale ships

    In large scale ships, the most used controllers for the steam/water loop are still the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. However, the tuning rules for the PID parameters are based on empirical knowledge and the performance for the loops is not satisfying. In order to improve the control performance of the steam/water loop, the application of a recently developed PID autotuning method is studied. Firstly, a 'forbidden region' on the Nyquist plane can be obtained based on user-defined performance requirements such as robustness or gain margin and phase margin. Secondly, the dynamic of the system can be obtained with a sine test around the operation point. Finally, the PID controller's parameters can be obtained by locating the frequency response of the controlled system at the edge of the 'forbidden region'. To verify the effectiveness of the new PID autotuning method, comparisons are presented with other PID autotuning methods, as well as the model predictive control. The results show the superiority of the new PID autotuning method

    Robust predictive tracking control for a class of nonlinear systems

    A robust predictive tracking control (RPTC) approach is developed in this paper to deal with a class of nonlinear SISO systems. To improve the control performance, the RPTC architecture mainly consists of a robust fuzzy PID (RFPID)-based control module and a robust PI grey model (RPIGM)-based prediction module. The RFPID functions as the main control unit to drive the system to desired goals. The control gains are online optimized by neural network-based fuzzy tuners. Meanwhile using grey and neural network theories, the RPIGM is designed with two tasks: to forecast the future system output which is fed to the RFPID to optimize the controller parameters ahead of time; and to estimate the impacts of noises and disturbances on the system performance in order to create properly a compensating control signal. Furthermore, a fuzzy grey cognitive map (FGCM)-based decision tool is built to regulate the RPIGM prediction step size to maximize the control efforts. Convergences of both the predictor and controller are theoretically guaranteed by Lyapunov stability conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed RPTC approach has been proved through real-time experiments on a nonlinear SISO system

    Impact of noise on a dynamical system: prediction and uncertainties from a swarm-optimized neural network

    In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) was developed for the time series prediction. The hybrid ANN+PSO algorithm was applied on Mackey--Glass chaotic time series in the short-term x(t+6)x(t+6). The performance prediction was evaluated and compared with another studies available in the literature. Also, we presented properties of the dynamical system via the study of chaotic behaviour obtained from the predicted time series. Next, the hybrid ANN+PSO algorithm was complemented with a Gaussian stochastic procedure (called {\it stochastic} hybrid ANN+PSO) in order to obtain a new estimator of the predictions, which also allowed us to compute uncertainties of predictions for noisy Mackey--Glass chaotic time series. Thus, we studied the impact of noise for several cases with a white noise level (σN\sigma_{N}) from 0.01 to 0.1.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Vibration suppression using fractional-order disturbance observer based adaptive grey predictive controller

    A novel control strategy is proposed for vibration suppression using an integration of a fractional-order disturbance observer (FDOB) and an adaptive grey predictive controller (AGPC). AGPC is utilized to realize outer loop control for better transient performance by predicting system outputs ahead with metabolic GM(1,1) model, and an adaptive step switching module is adopted for the grey predictor in AGPC. FDOB is used to obtain disturbance estimate and generate compensation signal, and as the order of Q-filter is expanded to real-number domain, FDOB has a wider range to select a suitable tradeoff between robustness and vibration suppression. For implementation of the fractional order Q-filter, broken-line approximation method is introduced. The proposed control strategy is simple in control-law derivation, and its effectiveness is validated by numerical simulations

    Load Frequency Control (LFC) Strategies in Renewable Energy‐Based Hybrid Power Systems:A Review

    The hybrid power system is a combination of renewable energy power plants and conventional energy power plants. This integration causes power quality issues including poor settling times and higher transient contents. The main issue of such interconnection is the frequency variations caused in the hybrid power system. Load Frequency Controller (LFC) design ensures the reliable and efficient operation of the power system. The main function of LFC is to maintain the system frequency within safe limits, hence keeping power at a specific range. An LFC should be supported with modern and intelligent control structures for providing the adequate power to the system. This paper presents a comprehensive review of several LFC structures in a diverse configuration of a power system. First of all, an overview of a renewable energy-based power system is provided with a need for the development of LFC. The basic operation was studied in single-area, multi-area and multi-stage power system configurations. Types of controllers developed on different techniques studied with an overview of different control techniques were utilized. The comparative analysis of various controllers and strategies was performed graphically. The future scope of work provided lists the potential areas for conducting further research. Finally, the paper concludes by emphasizing the need for better LFC design in complex power system environments

    A novel robust predictive control system over imperfect networks

    This paper aims to study on feedback control for a networked system with both uncertain delays, packet dropouts and disturbances. Here, a so-called robust predictive control (RPC) approach is designed as follows: 1- delays and packet dropouts are accurately detected online by a network problem detector (NPD); 2- a so-called PI-based neural network grey model (PINNGM) is developed in a general form for a capable of forecasting accurately in advance the network problems and the effects of disturbances on the system performance; 3- using the PINNGM outputs, a small adaptive buffer (SAB) is optimally generated on the remote side to deal with the large delays and/or packet dropouts and, therefore, simplify the control design; 4- based on the PINNGM and SAB, an adaptive sampling-based integral state feedback controller (ASISFC) is simply constructed to compensate the small delays and disturbances. Thus, the steady-state control performance is achieved with fast response, high adaptability and robustness. Case studies are finally provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach
