Mathematical Modeling of the Parabolic Trough Collector Field of the TCP-100 Research Plant
The 9th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation, EUROSIM 2016 Oulu (Finlandia)There are two main drawbacks when operating solar energy systems: a) the resulting energy costs are not yet
competitive and b) solar energy is not always available
when needed. In order to improve the overall solar plants
efficiency, advances control techniques play an important
role. In order to develop efficient and robust control techniques, the use of accurate mathematical models is crucial.
In this paper, the mathematical modeling of the new TCP100 parabolic trough collector (PTC) research facility at
the Plataforma Solar de Almería is presented. Some simulations are shown to demonstrate the adequate behavior

Mathematical Modeling of the Mojave Solar Plants
Competitiveness of solar energy is one of current main research topics. Overall efficiency
of solar plants can be improved by using advanced control strategies. To design and tuning properly
advanced control strategies, a mathematical model of the plant is needed. The model has to fulfill
two important points: (1) It has to reproduce accurately the dynamics of the real system; and (2) since
the model is used to test advanced control strategies, its computational burden has to be as low as
possible. This trade-off is essential to optimize the tuning process of the controller and minimize the
commissioning time. In this paper, the modeling of the large-scale commercial solar trough plants
Mojave Beta and Mojave Alpha is presented. These two models were used to test advanced control
strategies to operate the plants.Comisión Europea OCONTSOLAR 78905
Comparison of linear and point focus collectors in solar power plants
AbstractSolar tower based plants are seen as a promising technology to reduce the cost of electricity from solar radiation. This paper assesses the design and overall yearly performances of two different solar tower concepts featuring two commercial plants running in Spain. The first plant investigated is based on Direct Steam Generation and a cavity receiver (PS-10 type). The second plant considers an external cylindrical receiver with molten salts as heat transfer fluid and storage system (Gemasolar type). About the optical assessment performed with DELSOL3, a calibration of heliostat aim points was performed to match available flux maps on the receiver. Moving to results, the PS-10 type has higher optical performances both nominal design and yearly average. This is due both to the field size and orientation which guarantee a higher efficiency and to the receiver concept itself. About power production, the molten salts allow higher temperature and consequently conversion efficiency than PS-10. The solar-to-electricity efficiency is equal to 18.7% vs. 16.4% of DSG cavity plant. The obtained results are strictly related to the set of assumptions made on each plant component: when available real plant data where used. The two solar tower plants results were also compared to corresponding commercial linear focus plants featuring the same power block concept. Gemasolar type shows a higher solar-to-electricity efficiency compared to a parabolic trough plant with storage (18.7% vs. 15.4%) because of the higher maximum temperatures and, consequently, power block efficiency. PS-10 is better than a linear Fresnel DSG (16.4% vs. 10.4%) because of the higher optical performances
Object-oriented modeling for the transient performance simulation of solar thermal power plants using parabolic trough collectors: a review and proposal of modeling approaches for thermal energy storage
utilizan ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias y algebraicas. This work's intention is to extend the current state-of-the-art regarding
the modeling of the active direct and the active indirect two-tank moltensalt-
based thermal energy storage (TES) concept. The aim is to widen the
knowledge about their thermal behavior and operational aspects. In particular,
the developed models shall enable the evaluation of the storage system's
transient behavior.
Thus, the main part of this work (Part II) focuses on the modeling and
the performance evaluation of oil-to-molten salt heat exchangers for the active
indirect thermal energy storage technology, applying molten salt (60%, by weight, sodium nitrate, NaNO3, and 40%, by weight, potassium nitrate,
KNO3) as storage medium and thermal oil (a mixture of diphenyl, C12H10,
and diphenyl oxide, C12H10O) as heat transfer fluid. Assuming a shell-andtube
heat exchanger design, the performance of the heat exchange process
between the storage medium and the heat transfer fluid is discussed in detail,
considering steady-state as well as transient operating conditions under nominal
as well as partial loads. On the one hand, the steady-state model gives
useful information about overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop
ranges for two specific heat exchanger setups. In particular, it is shown that
two separate heat exchanger trains in parallel exceed the conventional single
train setup in performance. On the other hand, the evaluation of the transient
performance model yields typical process parameters as process gain,
dead time and time constant for charging as well as for discharging mode at
representative heat exchanger loads.
In addition to this, a reasonable simple transient high-temperature storage
tank model is derived, which is well suited for CSP performance simulations
on system level due to reasonable model simplifications. For example, it
is found in this work that the convective heat losses via the tank's gas atmosphere
(usually nitrogen at ambient pressure) above the molten salt surface
can be neglected by only introducing negligible calculation errors. Also, the
convective heat transfer coefficients between the molten salt and the wetted
parts of the tank's inner steel jacket may be set to constant values. However,
the important radiative heat transfer between the surface of the molten salt
and the non-wetted parts of the tank's inner steel jacket must be considered,
which is done assuming an ideal cylindrical geometry. Furthermore, due to
the transient modeling of the storage tank walls and a detailed estimation
of the exterior surface temperature, the influence of altering environmental
boundary conditions can be captured more accurately than by quasi-steadystate
methods that only account for the current ambient air temperature.
Finally, Part III treats the application of the developed TES model components
in a comprehensive model of a parabolic trough collector plant on
system level, showing not only the behavior of a typical active indirect twotank
TES system under transient operating conditions, but also the responses
of the entire solar thermal power plant to changing environmental boundary
conditions. It is shown that the thermal inertia of the active indirect TES
concept is considerable and forms a major obstacle for rapid load changes
that are crucial for capturing as much solar energy as possible, and to supply
the power block with constant thermal power, independently of the current
solar irradiance.
Last but not least, the presented models have been developed in a flexible,
well-structured and object-oriented way, particularly giving importance to a simulation-platform-independent implementation, which has been accomplished
applying Modelica, a multi-purpose physical system modeling
language, developed in an international effort in order to unify already existing
similar modeling approaches, and to enable developed models and model
libraries to be easily exchanged. Modelica's concept is based on non-causal
models featuring true ordinary differential and algebraic equations.Programa Oficial de Doctorado en Ingeniería y Arquitectura (RD 1393/2007)Ingeniaritzako eta Arkitekturako Doktoretza Programa Ofiziala (ED 1393/2007
Incremental State-Space Model Predictive Control of a Fresnel Solar Collector Field
Model predictive control has been demonstrated to be one of the most efficient control
techniques for solar power systems. An incremental offset-free state-space Model Predictive
Controller (MPC) is developed for the Fresnel collector field located at the solar cooling plant
installed on the roof of the Engineering School of Sevilla. A robust Luenberger observer is used for
estimating the states of the plant which cannot be measured. The proposed strategy is tested on a
nonlinear distributed parameter model of the Fresnel collector field. Its performance is compared to
that obtained with a gain-scheduling generalized predictive controller. A real test carried out at the
real plant is presented, showing that the proposed strategy achieves a very good performance.Comisión Europea ID 78905
Cascade solar thermal power system modeling and research of the key features.
Solar-thermal hybridization of AZEP
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2012.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 43-44).Carbon Dioxide emissions from power production are believed to have significant contributions to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Alternative energy resources, such as solar radiation, may help abate emissions but suffer from high costs of power production and temporal variations. On the other hand, Carbon Capture and Sequestration allows the continued use of fossil fuels without the CO2 emissions but it comes at an energetic penalty. The Advanced Zero Emissions Plant (AZEP) minimizes this energy loss by making use of Ion Transport Membrane (ITM)-based oxy-combustion to reduce the cost of carbon dioxide separation. This work seeks to assess if there are any thermodynamic gains from hybridizing solar-thermal energy with AZEP. The particular focus is hybridizing of the bottoming cycle with supplemental solar heating. A simple model of parabolic solar trough was used to hybridize a model of the AZEP cycle in ASPEN Plus*. Two cycle configurations are studied: the first uses solar parabolic troughs to indirectly vaporize high pressure steam through Therminol and the second uses parabolic troughs to directly preheat the high pressure water stream prior to vaporization. Simulations of the solar vaporizer hybrid by varying the total area of collectors (holding fuel input constant) show an increase of net electric output from 439MW for the non-hybridized AZEP to 533MW with an input solar share of 38.8%. The incremental solar efficiency is found to be around 16% for solar shares of input ranging from 5% to 38.8%. Moreover, simulations of variable solar insolation for collector area of 550,000 m2 , show that incremental solar efficiency increased with solar insolation reaching a plateau around 17%. Simulations of the direct solar preheater, show a net electric output of 501.3 MW for a solar share of 35%, (an incremental solar efficiency of 13.73%). The power generation and hence incremental efficiency is lower than in hybridization with steam vaporization with the same input solar share. Synergy analysis for the steam vaporization hybrid indicates no thermodynamic gains from hybridization.by Ragheb Mohamad Fawaz El Khaja.S.B
Numerical Characterization of the Flow Field and Heat Transfer Inside the Receiver of a Parabolic Trough Solar Collector Carrying Supercritical Co2
The aim of this research is to provide a detailed numerical analysis of flow field and heat transfer inside the heat collecting element of a parabolic trough collector. The parabolic trough collector is used as the boiler in a direct Super Critical Carbon Dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle.
A single collector is modeled and analyzed with different inlet conditions. The working fluid is supercritical since its pressure is increased to above critical pressure in the compressor while its temperature reaches 300 °C after passing through the recuperators and before entering the solar field. For the first time, this research considers both the non-uniform solar radiation irradiance around the trough receiver and the natural convection inside the receiver combined with the nonlinear variations in the physical properties of S-CO2.
Moreover, to investigate the variations in the outputs during a typical day a pseudo steady state scheme is applied. The changes in ambient conditions are so slow compared to the variations in the flow field that in each time step the flow filed is considered to fulfill the
steady state conditions. Hence, steady state numerical analysis is repeated for five time-steps (8 AM, 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM and 4 PM) and the results are graphed. A curve is then fitted to the thermal efficiency graph and outlet temperature of receiver graph to let the user interpolate the middle time steps
Model Predictive Control Based on Deep Learning for Solar Parabolic-Trough Plants
cuartil en Green & sustainable science & technology y Energy and fuels.Nowadays, there is an increasing interest in using renewable energy sources, including solar energy.
Parabolic trough plants are a type of solar thermal power plant in which solar radiation is reflected onto tubes
with parabolic mirrors. Inside these tubes circulates a fluid, usually oil or water, which is heated to generate
steam and turn a turbine to produce electricity.
One of the most widely used methods to control these plants is model predictive control (MPC), which
obtains the optimal control signals to send to the plant based on the use of a model. This method makes it
possible to predict its future state according to the chosen control strategy over a time horizon.
The MPC has the disadvantage of a significant computational cost associated with resolving an optimization
problem at each sampling time. This makes it challenging to implement in commercial and large plants, so
currently, one of the main challenges is to reduce these computational times, either technologically or by
using suboptimal techniques that simplify the problem.
This project proposes the use of neural networks that learn offline from the output provided by a predictive
controller to then approximate it. Different neural networks have been trained using a 30-day simulation
dataset and modifying the number of irradiance and temperature inputs. The results show that the neural
networks can provide practically the same power as the MPC with smoother variations of the output and very
low violations of the constraints, even when decreasing the number of inputs. The work has been published
in Renewable Energy, a first quartile journal in Green & sustainable science & technology and Energy and
fuels.Universidad de Sevilla. Máster en Ingeniería Industria
Dual Mode MPC for a Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Plant
A model predictive control strategy for a concentrated solar thermal power plant is proposed. Design of the proposed controller is based on an estimated linear time-invariant state space model around a nominal operating point. The model is estimated directly from input-output data using the subspace identification method and taking into account the frequency response of the plant. Input-output data are obtained from a nonlinear distributed parameter model of a plant rather than the plant itself. Effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in terms of tracking and disturbance rejection is evaluated through two different scenarios created in a nonlinear simulation environment
