Ultra-high peak power laser systems are applicable in new and very promising areas, such as charged particles acceleration and inertial confinement of the fusion nuclear reaction. First one could be used as effective secondary source of Y and X-ray beams, which have multiple applications in industry and medicine if repetition rate will be increased, the last one could serve as a source of unlimited energy after transforming in to the power plants. New technologies are able to significantly increase the output peak power due to extraction of the higher energy extracting during pumping (EDP). The record of extracted energy about 200 J and output power of 5 PW were reached with this technique. Polarization Encoded Chirped Pulse Amplification (PE-CPA) technique as well as two stages of compression produced shorter pulse duration also are presented in this chapter. Besides, the capability of combination of the EDP method and the Thin Disk (EDP-TD) applied to Ti:Sa amplifiers to produce the higher repetition rate in the PW-class laser systems, as well as the results of the proof-of-principal experiments will be demonstrated

This thesis describes the construction of a hybrid OPCPA and Nd:Glass based laser system to provide advanced diagnostic capabilities for the MAGPIE pulsed power facility at Imperial College London. The laser system (named Cerberus) is designed to provide one short pulse 500 fs beam for proton probing and two long pulse beams, one for x-ray backlighting and one for Thomson scattering. The aim of this project is to accurately determine plasma parameters in a range of demanding experimental environments. The thesis is split into two sections; the first section provides details about the design and implementation of the laser system while the latter chapters present experimental data obtained on the MAGPIE facilty. The front end for the laser system is based on optically synchronised Optical Parametric Chirped Puled Amplification (OPCPA) which is supplemented by large aperture flashlamp pumped Nd:Glass power amplifiers in the latter stages to increase the energy to the Joule level. The use of optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) in the pre-amplifier stages reduces gain narrowing, B-integral and improves contrast. Simulations of the dispersive optics for the Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) system are described in detail. Spatially resolved Thomson scattering was used to measure temperature and velocity of ablation streams in aluminium and tungsten cylindrical wire arrays. The measurements show a peak ow velocity of 120 km/s and agree well with 3D MHD simulations for the case of aluminium. There is discrepancy with the tungsten data caused by the difficulty in handling of collisionality calculations. Novel data showing the self-emission of ions from tungsten radial wire arrays is presented as a key step towards laser driven proton probing of MAGPIE. It is observed that the bulk of the emission corresponds to low energy protons with energies of ~ 100 keV. Protons with energy > 600 keV were observed to emanate from the collapsing magnetic jet using a coded aperture camera. These results offer interesting new prospects in diagnosing wire arrays.Open Acces

Timing Jitter In Long-haul WDM Return-To-Zero Systems

Optical pulse processing towards Tb/s high-speed photonic systems

Due to the continued growth of high-bandwidth services provided by the internet, there is a requirement to operate individual line rates in excess of 100 Gb/s in next generation optical communications systems. Thus, to implement these high-speed optical networks all-optical processing techniques are necessary for pulse shaping and pulse routing. Two sub-systems (pulse generation and wavelength conversion), which exploit optical processing techniques are explored within this thesis. Future systems will require high-quality pulse sources and this thesis develops the pulse generation technique of gain switching to provide simple and cost efficient pulse sources. The poor pulse quality typically associated with gain switching is enhanced by developing all-optical methods. The main attribute of the first pulse generation scheme presented is its wavelength tunability over 50 nm. The novelty of the second scheme lies in the ability to design a grating which has a nonlinear chirp profile exactly opposite to the gain-switched pulses. This grating used in conjunction with the gain-switched laser generates transform limited pulses suitable for 80 Gb/s systems. Furthermore the use of a vertical microcavity-based saturable absorber to suppress detrimental temporal pulse pedestals of a pulse source is investigated. Next generation networks will require routing of data in the optical domain, which can be accomplished by high-speed all-optical wavelength converters. A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is an ideal device to carry out wavelength conversion. In this thesis pulses following propagation through an SOA are experimentally characterised to examine the temporal and spectral dynamics due to the nonlinear response of the SOA. High-speed wavelength conversion is presented using SOA-based shifted filtering. For the first time 80 Gb/s error-free performance was obtained using cross phase modulation in conjunction with blue spectral shifted filtering. In addition an important attribute of this work experimentally examines the temporal profile and phase of the SOA-based shifted filtering wavelength converted signals. Thus the contribution and effect of ultrafast carrier dynamics associated with SOAs is presented
