Modeling and Evaluation of Single Machine Flexibility Using Fuzzy Entropy and Genetic Algorithm Based Approach
International audienceFlexibility has long been recognized as a manufacturing capability that has the potential to impact mainly the competitive position of an organization. The entropy approach, which was extended from information theory, fell in handling problems with incomplete and uncertain data, because it depicts only the stochastic aspects included with measured observations. In order to get a global view, this work proposes a new approach based on fuzzy entropy concept. The development of the fuzzy model results in a set of nonlinear constrained problems to be solved using a metaheuristics method. The applicability of our approach is illustrated through a flexible manufacturing cell. By adopting such framework, both dimensions of uncertainty in system modeling, expressed by stochastic variability and imprecision, can be taken into consideration
Intelligent systems in manufacturing: current developments and future prospects
Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS

Diabetes Diagnosis by Case-Based Reasoning and Fuzzy Logic
In the medical field, experts’ knowledge is based on experience, theoretical knowledge and rules. Case-based reasoning is a problem-solving paradigm which is based on past experiences. For this purpose, a large number of decision support applications based on CBR have been developed. Cases retrieval is often considered as the most important step of case-based reasoning. In this article, we integrate fuzzy logic and data mining to improve the response time and the accuracy of the retrieval of similar cases. The proposed Fuzzy CBR is composed of two complementary parts; the part of classification by fuzzy decision tree realized by Fispro and the part of case-based reasoning realized by the platform JColibri. The use of fuzzy logic aims to reduce the complexity of calculating the degree of similarity that can exist between diabetic patients who require different monitoring plans. The results of the proposed approach are compared with earlier methods using accuracy as metrics. The experimental results indicate that the fuzzy decision tree is very effective in improving the accuracy for diabetes classification and hence improving the retrieval step of CBR reasoning
Facility layout problem: Bibliometric and benchmarking analysis
Facility layout problem is related to the location of departments in a facility area, with the aim of determining the most effective configuration. Researches based on different approaches have been published in the last six decades and, to prove the effectiveness of the results obtained, several instances have been developed. This paper presents a general overview on the extant literature on facility layout problems in order to identify the main research trends and propose future research questions. Firstly, in order to give the reader an overview of the literature, a bibliometric analysis is presented. Then, a clusterization of the papers referred to the main instances reported in literature was carried out in order to create a database that can be a useful tool in the benchmarking procedure for researchers that would approach this kind of problems
Optimization of fuzzy rule sets using a bacterial evolutionary algorithm
In this paper we present a novel approach where we rst create a large
set of (possibly) redundant rules using inductive rule learning and where we
use a bacterial evolutionary algorithm to identify the best subset of rules in a
subsequent step. This enables us to nd an optimal rule set with respect to a
freely de nable global goal function, which gives us the possibility to integrate
interpretability related quality criteria explicitly in the goal function and to
consider the interplay of the overlapping fuzzy rulesPeer Reviewe
