    Synthetic aperture radar/LANDSAT MSS image registration

    Algorithms and procedures necessary to merge aircraft synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery were determined. The design of a SAR/LANDSAT data merging system was developed. Aircraft SAR images were registered to the corresponding LANDSAT MSS scenes and were the subject of experimental investigations. Results indicate that the registration of SAR imagery with LANDSAT MSS imagery is feasible from a technical viewpoint, and useful from an information-content viewpoint

    Radio tomography and borehole radar delineation of the McConnell nickel sulfide deposit, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

    In an effort to reduce costs and increase revenues at mines, there is a strong incentive to develop high-resolution techniques both for near-mine exploration and for delineation of known orebodies To investigate the potential of high-frequency EM techniques for exploration and delineation of massive sulfide orebodies, radio frequency electromagnetic (RFEM) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted in boreholes through the McConnell massive nickel-copper sulfide body near Sudbury, Ontario, from 1993-1996. Crosshole RFEM data were acquired with a JW-4 electric dipole system between two boreholes on section 2720W. Ten frequencies between 0.5 and 5.0 MHz were recorded. Radio signals propagated through the Sudbury Breccia over ranges of at least 150 m at all frequencies. The resulting radio absorption tomogram clearly imaged the McConnell deposit over 110 m downdip. Signal was extinguished when either antenna entered the sulfide body. However, the expected radio shadow did not eventuate when transmitter and receiver were on opposite sides of the deposit. Two-dimensional modeling suggested that diffraction around the edges of the sulfide body could not account for the observed held amplitudes. It was concluded at the time that the sulfide body is discontinuous; according to modeling, a gap as small as 5 m could have explained the observations. Subsequent investigations by INCO established that pick-up in the metal-cored downhole cables was actually responsible for the elevated signal levels. Both single-hole reflection profiles and crosshole measurements were acquired using RAMAC borehole radar systems, operating at 60 MHz. Detection of radar reflections from the sulfide contact was problematic. One coherent reflection was observed from the hanging-wall contact in single-hole reflection mode. This reflection could be traced about 25 m uphole from the contact. In addition to unfavorable survey geometry, factors which may have suppressed reflections included host rock heterogeneity, disseminated sulfides, and contact irregularity. Velocity and absorption tomograms were generated in the Sudbury Breccia host rock from the crosshole radar. Radar velocity was variable, averaging 125 m/mus, while absorption was typically 0.8 dB/m at 60 MHz. Kirchhoff-style 2-D migration of later arrivals in the crosshole radargrams defined reflective zones that roughly parallel the inferred edge of the sulfide body. The McConnell high-frequency EM surveys established that radio tomography and simple radio shadowing are potentially valuable for near- and in-mine exploration and orebody delineation in the Sudbury Breccia.     Self-correcting multi-channel Bussgang blind deconvolution using expectation maximization (EM) algorithm and feedback

    A Bussgang based blind deconvolution algorithm called self-correcting multi-channel Bussgang (SCMB) blind deconvolution algorithm was proposed. Unlike the original Bussgang blind deconvolution algorithm where the probability density function (pdf) of the signal being recovered is assumed to be completely known, the proposed SCMB blind deconvolution algorithm relaxes this restriction by parameterized the pdf with a Gaussian mixture model and expectation maximization (EM) algorithm, an iterative maximum likelihood approach, is employed to estimate the parameter side by side with the estimation of the equalization filters of the original Bussgang blind deconvolution algorithm. A feedback loop is also designed to compensate the effect of the parameter estimation error on the estimation of the equalization filters.     Massive MIMO is a Reality -- What is Next? Five Promising Research Directions for Antenna Arrays

    Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) is no longer a "wild" or "promising" concept for future cellular networks - in 2018 it became a reality. Base stations (BSs) with 64 fully digital transceiver chains were commercially deployed in several countries, the key ingredients of Massive MIMO have made it into the 5G standard, the signal processing methods required to achieve unprecedented spectral efficiency have been developed, and the limitation due to pilot contamination has been resolved. Even the development of fully digital Massive MIMO arrays for mmWave frequencies - once viewed prohibitively complicated and costly - is well underway. In a few years, Massive MIMO with fully digital transceivers will be a mainstream feature at both sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequencies. In this paper, we explain how the first chapter of the Massive MIMO research saga has come to an end, while the story has just begun. The coming wide-scale deployment of BSs with massive antenna arrays opens the door to a brand new world where spatial processing capabilities are omnipresent. In addition to mobile broadband services, the antennas can be used for other communication applications, such as low-power machine-type or ultra-reliable communications, as well as non-communication applications such as radar, sensing and positioning.     Dynamic Denoising of Tracking Sequences

The enhancement part of the algorithm is based on Bayesian wavelet denoising, which has been chosen due to its exceptional ability to incorporate diverse a priori information into the process of image recovery. In particular, we demonstrate that, in dynamic settings, useful statistical priors can come both from some reasonable assumptions on the properties of the image to be enhanced as well as from the images that have already been observed before the current scene. Using such priors forms the main contribution of the present paper which is the proposal of the dynamic denoising as a tool for simultaneously enhancing and tracking image sequences.Within the proposed framework, the previous observations of a dynamic scene are employed to enhance its present observation. The mechanism that allows the fusion of the information within successive image frames is Bayesian estimation, while transferring the useful information between the images is governed by a Kalman filter that is used for both prediction and estimation of the dynamics of tracked objects. Therefore, in this methodology, the processes of target tracking and image enhancement "collaborate" in an interlacing manner, rather than being applied separately. The dynamic denoising is demonstrated on several examples of SAR imagery. The results demonstrated in this paper indicate a number of advantages of the proposed dynamic denoising over "static" approaches, in which the tracking images are enhanced independently of each other

    A compressed sensing approach to block-iterative equalization: connections and applications to radar imaging reconstruction

    The widespread of underdetermined systems has brought forth a variety of new algorithmic solutions, which capitalize on the Compressed Sensing (CS) of sparse data. While well known greedy or iterative threshold type of CS recursions take the form of an adaptive filter followed by a proximal operator, this is no different in spirit from the role of block iterative decision-feedback equalizers (BI-DFE), where structure is roughly exploited by the signal constellation slicer. By taking advantage of the intrinsic sparsity of signal modulations in a communications scenario, the concept of interblock interference (IBI) can be approached more cunningly in light of CS concepts, whereby the optimal feedback of detected symbols is devised adaptively. The new DFE takes the form of a more efficient re-estimation scheme, proposed under recursive-least-squares based adaptations. Whenever suitable, these recursions are derived under a reduced-complexity, widely-linear formulation, which further reduces the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) in comparison with traditional strictly-linear approaches. Besides maximizing system throughput, the new algorithms exhibit significantly higher performance when compared to existing methods. Our reasoning will also show that a properly formulated BI-DFE turns out to be a powerful CS algorithm itself. A new algorithm, referred to as CS-Block DFE (CS-BDFE) exhibits improved convergence and detection when compared to first order methods, thus outperforming the state-of-the-art Complex Approximate Message Passing (CAMP) recursions. The merits of the new recursions are illustrated under a novel 3D MIMO Radar formulation, where the CAMP algorithm is shown to fail with respect to important performance measures.A proliferação de sistemas sub-determinados trouxe a tona uma gama de novas soluções algorítmicas, baseadas no sensoriamento compressivo (CS) de dados esparsos. As recursões do tipo greedy e de limitação iterativa para CS se apresentam comumente como um filtro adaptativo seguido de um operador proximal, não muito diferente dos equalizadores de realimentação de decisão iterativos em blocos (BI-DFE), em que um decisor explora a estrutura do sinal de constelação. A partir da esparsidade intrínseca presente na modulação de sinais no contexto de comunicações, a interferência entre blocos (IBI) pode ser abordada utilizando-se o conceito de CS, onde a realimentação ótima de símbolos detectados é realizada de forma adaptativa. O novo DFE se apresenta como um esquema mais eficiente de reestimação, baseado na atualização por mínimos quadrados recursivos (RLS). Sempre que possível estas recursões são propostas via formulação linear no sentido amplo, o que reduz ainda mais o erro médio quadrático mínimo (MMSE) em comparação com abordagens tradicionais. Além de maximizar a taxa de transferência de informação, o novo algoritmo exibe um desempenho significativamente superior quando comparado aos métodos existentes. Também mostraremos que um equalizador BI-DFE formulado adequadamente se torna um poderoso algoritmo de CS. O novo algoritmo CS-BDFE apresenta convergência e detecção aprimoradas, quando comparado a métodos de primeira ordem, superando as recursões de Passagem de Mensagem Aproximada para Complexos (CAMP). Os méritos das novas recursões são ilustrados através de um modelo tridimensional para radares MIMO recentemente proposto, onde o algoritmo CAMP falha em aspectos importantes de medidas de desempenho

    Hardware architectures for compact microwave and millimeter wave cameras

    Millimeter wave SAR imaging has shown promise as an inspection tool for human skin for characterizing burns and skin cancers. However, the current state-of-the-art in microwave camera technology is not yet suited for developing a millimeter wave camera for human skin inspection. Consequently, the objective of this dissertation has been to build the necessary foundation of research to achieve such a millimeter wave camera. First, frequency uncertainty in signals generated by a practical microwave source, which is prone to drift in output frequency, was studied to determine its effect on SAR-generated images. A direct relationship was found between the level of image distortions caused by frequency uncertainty and the product of frequency uncertainty and distance between the imaging measurement grid and sample under test. The second investigation involved the development of a millimeter wave imaging system that forms the basic building block for a millimeter wave camera. The imaging system, composed of two system-on-chip transmitters and receivers and an antipodal Vivaldi-style antenna, operated in the 58-64 GHz frequency range and employed the ω-k SAR algorithm. Imaging tests on burnt pigskin showed its potential for imaging and characterizing flaws in skin. The final investigation involved the development of a new microwave imaging methodology, named Chaotic Excitation Synthetic Aperture Radar (CESAR), for designing microwave and millimeter wave cameras at a fraction of the size and hardware complexity of previous systems. CESAR is based on transmitting and receiving from all antennas in a planar array simultaneously. A small microwave camera operating in the 23-25 GHz frequency was designed and fabricated based on CESAR.
