    Optimizing Proactive Measures for Security Operations

    Digital security threats may impact governments, businesses, and consumers through intellectual property theft, loss of physical assets, economic damages, and loss of confidence. Significant effort has been placed on technology solutions that can mitigate threat exposure. Additionally, hundreds of years of literature have focused on non-digital, human-centric strategies that proactively allow organizations to assess threats and implement mitigation plans. For both human and technology-centric solutions, little to no prior research exists on the efficacy of how humans employ digital security defenses. Security professionals are armed with commonly adopted "best practices" but are generally unaware of the particular artifacts and conditions (e.g., organizational culture, procurement processes, employee training/education) that may or may not make a particular environment well-suited for employing the best practices. In this thesis, I study proactive measures for security operations and related human factors to identify generalizable optimizations that can be applied for measurable increases in security. Through interview and survey methods, I investigate the human and organizational factors that shape the adoption and employment of defensive strategies. Case studies with partnered organizations and comprehensive evaluations of security programs reveal security gaps that many professionals were previously unaware of --- as well as opportunities for changes in security behaviors to mitigate future risk. These studies highlight that, in exemplar environments, the adoption of proactive security assessments and training programs lead to measurable improvements in organizations' security posture

    Security Strategies for Hosting Sensitive Information in the Commercial Cloud

    IT experts often struggle to find strategies to secure data on the cloud. Although current security standards might provide cloud compliance, they fail to offer guarantees of security assurance. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the strategies used by IT security managers to host sensitive information in the commercial cloud. The study\u27s population consisted of information security managers from a government agency in the eastern region of the United States. The routine active theory, developed by Cohen and Felson, was used as the conceptual framework for the study. The data collection process included IT security manager interviews (n = 7), organizational documents and procedures (n = 14), and direct observation of a training meeting (n = 35). Data collection from organizational data and observational data were summarized. Coding from the interviews and member checking were triangulated with organizational documents and observational data/field notes to produce major and minor themes. Through methodological triangulation, 5 major themes emerged from the data analysis: avoiding social engineering vulnerabilities, avoiding weak encryption, maintaining customer trust, training to create a cloud security culture, and developing sufficient policies. The findings of this study may benefit information security managers by enhancing their information security practices to better protect their organization\u27s information that is stored in the commercial cloud.     Cyberattacks and Security of Cloud Computing: A Complete Guideline

    Cloud computing is an innovative technique that offers shared resources for stock cache and server management. Cloud computing saves time and monitoring costs for any organization and turns technological solutions for large-scale systems into server-to-service frameworks. However, just like any other technology, cloud computing opens up many forms of security threats and problems. In this work, we focus on discussing different cloud models and cloud services, respectively. Next, we discuss the security trends in the cloud models. Taking these security trends into account, we move to security problems, including data breaches, data confidentiality, data access controllability, authentication, inadequate diligence, phishing, key exposure, auditing, privacy preservability, and cloud-assisted IoT applications. We then propose security attacks and countermeasures specifically for the different cloud models based on the security trends and problems. In the end, we pinpoint some of the futuristic directions and implications relevant to the security of cloud models. The future directions will help researchers in academia and industry work toward cloud computing security

    Recent trends in applying TPM to cloud computing

    Trusted platform modules (TPM) have become important safe‐guards against variety of software‐based attacks. By providing a limited set of cryptographic services through a well‐defined interface, separated from the software itself, TPM can serve as a root of trust and as a building block for higher‐level security measures. This article surveys the literature for applications of TPM in the cloud‐computing environment, with publication dates comprised between 2013 and 2018. It identifies the current trends and objectives of this technology in the cloud, and the type of threats that it mitigates. Toward the end, the main research gaps are pinpointed and discussed. Since integrity measurement is one of the main usages of TPM, special attention is paid to the assessment of run time phases and software layers it is applied to.</p

    Investigating Emerging Security Threats in Clouds and Data Centers

    Data centers have been growing rapidly in recent years to meet the surging demand of cloud services. However, the expanding scale of a data center also brings new security threats. This dissertation studies emerging security issues in clouds and data centers from different aspects, including low-level cooling infrastructures and different virtualization techniques such as container and virtual machine (VM). We first unveil a new vulnerability called reduced cooling redundancy that might be exploited to launch thermal attacks, resulting in severely worsened thermal conditions in a data center. Such a vulnerability is caused by the wide adoption of aggressive cooling energy saving policies. We conduct thermal measurements and uncover effective thermal attack vectors at the server, rack, and data center levels. We also present damage assessments of thermal attacks. Our results demonstrate that thermal attacks can negatively impact the thermal conditions and reliability of victim servers, significantly raise the cooling cost, and even lead to cooling failures. Finally, we propose effective defenses to mitigate thermal attacks. We then perform a systematic study to understand the security implications of the information leakage in multi-tenancy container cloud services. Due to the incomplete implementation of system resource isolation mechanisms in the Linux kernel, a spectrum of system-wide host information is exposed to the containers, including host-system state information and individual process execution information. By exploiting such leaked host information, malicious adversaries can easily launch advanced attacks that can seriously affect the reliability of cloud services. Additionally, we discuss the root causes of the containers\u27 information leakage and propose a two-stage defense approach. The experimental results show that our defense is effective and incurs trivial performance overhead. Finally, we investigate security issues in the existing VM live migration approaches, especially the post-copy approach. While the entire live migration process relies upon reliable TCP connectivity for the transfer of the VM state, we demonstrate that the loss of TCP reliability leads to VM live migration failure. By intentionally aborting the TCP connection, attackers can cause unrecoverable memory inconsistency for post-copy, significantly increase service downtime, and degrade the running VM\u27s performance. From the offensive side, we present detailed techniques to reset the migration connection under heavy networking traffic. From the defensive side, we also propose effective protection to secure the live migration procedure

At the time of virtual communication under any types of topologies, firstly, the validity and security must be guaranteed. Otherwise, such communication cause complex problems and resources damage over the networks. However, communication systems are vulnerable, the nation's reliance on the integrities, confidentialities, and availabilities of information stand in stark contrast to the inadequacy of their cybersecurity. In fact, communication systems or internet was not primarily designed with security in oriented or human minds. On the other word, coordinating of huge numbers of network components, first of all, need to a secure connection, either such connection established via air-interface or integrated physically under predefined protocols over the network. Additionally, one of the accomplishment responsibility of a government is creating a deterrence team or military to combat any types of attack and threat either on cyberspace or on realistic. In modern communication systems cyber-attacks becoming increasingly in terms of espionage, and it would make a big challenge in the future of cyberspace by causing serious damage to information systems. From the other hand, the government of Afghanistan does not have a well-defined strategy against any types of outsider cyberattacks while the huge amount of the exchangeable data transferring from the countries who are in charge of espionage and attempt to make catastrophic problems on Afghanistan's cyberspace. In consideration to these issues, this study concerned in Afghanistan's cyber-threats including cyber-attacks and cyber-exploit, information security challenges, analysis and effects of cyber-attacks on current Afghanistan network infrastructures. Definition of somewhat solution for distinctive and non-distinctive cyber-attacks over cyberspace, as well as the analysis of current and future cyberspace crisis, models and simulations aspect in some partial part of this report, has been also covered. However, current cyberspace status of Afghanistan in term of security, challenges of prevalent future cyber security and cyber security difficulties have also illustrated in this report

    On the Security Assessment of the Cloud

    Cloud computing is an enabling technology paradigm that provides access to the geodistributed pool of resources that are rapidly and flexibly provisioned at run-time with minimum management from the user. These benefits have driven the proliferation of the Cloud over the last decade. Many organizations have migrated to the Cloud or have a Cloudfirst strategy for their businesses. Despite these benefits, the security of the Cloud has been flagged as among the top concerns by its users. To address security concerns, Threat Analysis (TA) is often advocated to ascertain a system’s exposure to threats. A plethora of TA techniques exist that focus on analyzing threats to targeted assets at the system’s level (e.g., components, hardware) or at the user’s level (e.g., virtual machine) in the Cloud. These techniques are effective, but their applicability is limited beyond their targeted asset. However, the Cloud is a complex system entailing both the physical and virtual resources. Moreover, these resources can instantiate, migrate across physical hosts, or decommission to provide rapid resource elasticity to the users. On this background, this thesis aims at assessing the security of the Cloud holistically by considering the interactions among the services/components involved in the operational stack of the Cloud. In this regard, a technology-agnostic information flow model is developed that represents the Cloud’s functionality through a set of conditional transitions. Furthermore, threats are added to the model to analyze their impact on the Cloud. This enables the exploration of a threat’s behavior and its propagation across the Cloud and supports assessing the security of the Cloud by analyzing the impact of multiple threats across various operational layers/assets. Using public information on threats from the National Vulnerability Database (NVD), actual Cloud attacks were traced and speculatively postulated alternate potential attack paths. Furthermore, the thesis also investigates different threats with similar indicators of compromise (e.g., attack patterns) to be considered in the security assessment along with the specific user’s requirements. Finally, the thesis also targets the evaluation of potential violations from the Cloud providers that breach users’ requirements. The results presented in the thesis demonstrate that by ascertaining the attack paths and considering the interplay between threats and security requirements, the security of the Cloud can be comprehensively assessed
