    Forensic Linguistics: Science or Fiction?

    The history of linguistics is meager and splintered due to the subject’s interdisciplinary nature. In the postwar era, the discipline attempted to revive as a scientific one, spearheaded by Noam Chomsky and his theory of generative grammar. Linguistics consequently broke away from the predominant structuralist approach of the nineteenth century, returning to rationalist roots. But with the rise of computer technology, Chomsky’s critiques of empirical, applicational linguistic approaches have lost their force. As academic linguistics splinters off again, loses its scientific edge, and regroups with the humanities, linguistics applied in the forensic context may implicate more questions than it answers, fundamental questions about humans and language that linguists are still unable to solve: What is language? Do we use language in a way that is uniquely identifiable? Should we look at language use from a societal or individualized, psychological perspective? This Note seeks to reveal these tensions, by providing an overview of the historical development of forensic linguistics; highlights the theory of idiolect backing the use of forensic linguistic evidence; and critiques idiolect and forensic linguistics’ statistical turn in light of linguistics’ ebbing scientific status. As the larger epistemological questions behind forensic linguistic theory remain indeterminate, authorship identification may remain a question of weight, similarity, and difference for judges and juries to grapple with, highlighting the “sliding scale” problem of reliability in the forensic sciences

    Bayesian hierarchical modeling for the forensic evaluation of handwritten documents

    The analysis of handwritten evidence has been used widely in courts in the United States since the 1930s (Osborn, 1946). Traditional evaluations are conducted by trained forensic examiners. More recently, there has been a movement toward objective and probability-based evaluation of evidence, and a variety of governing bodies have made explicit calls for research to support the scientific underpinnings of the field (National Research Council, 2009; President\u27s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (US), 2016; National Institutes of Standards and Technology). This body of work makes contributions to help satisfy those needs for the evaluation of handwritten documents. We develop a framework to evaluate a questioned writing sample against a finite set of genuine writing samples from known sources. Our approach is fully automated, reducing the opportunity for cognitive biases to enter the analysis pipeline through regular examiner intervention. Our methods are able to handle all writing styles together, and result in estimated probabilities of writership based on parametric modeling. We contribute open-source datasets, code, and algorithms. A document is prepared for the evaluation processed by first being scanned and stored as an image file. The image is processed and the text within is decomposed into a sequence of disjoint graphical structures. The graphs serve as the smallest unit of writing we will consider, and features extracted from them are used as data for modeling. Chapter 2 describes the image processing steps and introduces a distance measure for the graphs. The distance measure is used in a K-means clustering algorithm (Forgy, 1965; Lloyd, 1982; Gan and Ng, 2017), which results in a clustering template with 40 exemplar structures. The primary feature we extract from each graph is a cluster assignment. We do so by comparing each graph to the template and making assignments based on the exemplar to which each graph is most similar in structure. The cluster assignment feature is used for a writer identification exercise using a Bayesian hierarchical model on a small set of 27 writers. In Chapter 3 we incorporate new data sources and a larger number of writers in the clustering algorithm to produce an updated template. A mixture component is added to the hierarchical model and we explore the relationship between a writer\u27s estimated mixing parameter and their writing style. In Chapter 4 we expand the hierarchical model to include other graph-based features, in addition to cluster assignments. We incorporate an angular feature with support on the polar coordinate system into the hierarchical modeling framework using a circular probability density function. The new model is applied and tested in three applications

In the current informatics context, the development of the applications with databases is the work of the specialists. Using databases, reach a database from various applications, and also some of related concepts, have become accessible to all categories of IT users. This paper aims to summarize the curricular area regarding the fundamental database systems issues, which are necessary in order to train specialists in economic informatics higher education. The database systems integrate and interfere with several informatics technologies and therefore are more difficult to understand and use. Thus, students should know already a set of minimum, mandatory concepts and their practical implementation: computer systems, programming techniques, programming languages, data structures.     The WOZ Recognizer: A Tool For Understanding User Perceptions of Sketch-Based Interfaces

    Sketch recognition has the potential to be an important input method for computers in the coming years; however, designing and building an accurate and sophisticated sketch recognition system is a time consuming and daunting task. Since sketch recognition is still at a level where mistakes are common, it is important to understand how users perceive and tolerate recognition errors and other user interface elements with these imperfect systems. A problem in performing this type of research is that we cannot easily control aspects of recognition in order to rigorously study the systems. We performed a study examining user perceptions of three pen-based systems for creating logic gate diagrams: a sketch-based interface, a WIMP-based interface, and a hybrid interface that combined elements of sketching and WIMP. We found that users preferred the sketch-based interface and we identified important criteria for pen-based application design. This work exposed the issue of studying recognition systems without fine-grained control over accuracy, recognition mode, and other recognizer properties. In order to solve this problem, we developed a Wizard of Oz sketch recognition tool, the WOZ Recognizer, that supports controlled symbol and position accuracy and batch and streaming recognition modes for a variety of sketching domains. We present the design of the WOZ Recognizer, modeling recognition domains using graphs, symbol alphabets, and grammars; and discuss the types of recognition errors we included in its design. Further, we discuss how the WOZ Recognizer simulates sketch recognition, controlling the WOZ Recognizer, and how users interact with it. In addition, we present an evaluative user study of the WOZ Recognizer and the lessons we learned. We have used the WOZ Recognizer to perform two user studies examining user perceptions of sketch recognition; both studies focused on mathematical sketching. In the first study, we examined whether users prefer recognition feedback now (real-time recognition) or later (batch recognition) in relation to different recognition accuracies and sketch complexities. We found that participants displayed a preference for real-time recognition in some situations (multiple expressions, low accuracy), but no statistical preference in others. In our second study, we examined whether users displayed a greater tolerance for recognition errors when they used mathematical sketching applications they found interesting or useful compared to applications they found less interesting. Participants felt they had a greater tolerance for the applications they preferred, although our statistical analysis did not positively support this. In addition to the research already performed, we propose several avenues for future research into user perceptions of sketch recognition that we believe will be of value to sketch recognizer researchers and application designers

    Becoming the Expert - Interactive Multi-Class Machine Teaching

    Compared to machines, humans are extremely good at classifying images into categories, especially when they possess prior knowledge of the categories at hand. If this prior information is not available, supervision in the form of teaching images is required. To learn categories more quickly, people should see important and representative images first, followed by less important images later - or not at all. However, image-importance is individual-specific, i.e. a teaching image is important to a student if it changes their overall ability to discriminate between classes. Further, students keep learning, so while image-importance depends on their current knowledge, it also varies with time. In this work we propose an Interactive Machine Teaching algorithm that enables a computer to teach challenging visual concepts to a human. Our adaptive algorithm chooses, online, which labeled images from a teaching set should be shown to the student as they learn. We show that a teaching strategy that probabilistically models the student's ability and progress, based on their correct and incorrect answers, produces better 'experts'. We present results using real human participants across several varied and challenging real-world datasets.Comment: CVPR 201
