In this work, as the last step of a longitudinal study of the impact of so- cial learning and gamification methodologies on learning results in higher education, we have recorded the activity in a software platform based on Moodle, especially built for encouraging online participation of the stu- dents to design, carry out and evaluate a set of learning tasks and games, during two consecutive editions of an undergraduate course. Our aim is to confirm the relationships of the patterns of accomplishment of the gam- ified activities and the network structure of the social graphs associated to the online forums with knowledge adquisition and final outcomes. For this purpose we have offered two learning paths, traditional and novel, to our students. We have identified course variables that quantitatively explain the improvements reported when using the innovative methodolo- gies integrated in the course design, and we have applied techniques from the social network analysis (SNA) and the machine learning/deep learn- ing (ML/DL) domains to conduct success/failure classification methods finding that, generally, very good results are obtained when an ensemble approach is used, that is, when we blend the predictions made by different classifiers. The proposed methodology can be used over reduced datasets and variable time windows for having early estimates that allow pedagog- ical interventions. Finally, we have applied other statistical tests to our datasets, that confirm the influence of learning path on learning results

Theory of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Fibers for Highly Multimode Excitations

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is an important nonlinear optical effect which can both enable and impede optical processes in guided wave systems. Highly multi-mode excitation of fibers has been proposed as a novel route towards efficient suppression of SBS in both active and passive fibers. To study the effects of multimode excitation generally, we develop a theory of SBS for arbitrary input excitations, fiber cross section geometries and refractive index profiles. We derive appropriate nonlinear coupled mode equations for the signal and Stokes modal amplitudes starting from vector optical and tensor acoustic equations. Using applicable approximations, we find an analytical formula for the SBS (Stokes) gain susceptibility, which takes into account the vector nature of both optical and acoustic modes exactly. We show that upon multimode excitation, the SBS power in each Stokes mode grows exponentially with a growth rate that depends parametrically on the distribution of power in the signal modes. Specializing to isotropic fibers we are able to define and calculate an effective SBS gain spectrum for any choice of multimode excitation. The peak value of this gain spectrum determines the SBS threshold, the maximum SBS-limited power that can be sent through the fiber. We show theoretically that peak SBS gain is greatly reduced by highly multimode excitation due to gain broadening and relatively weaker intermodal SBS gain. We demonstrate that equal excitation of the 160 modes of a commercially available, highly multimode circular step index fiber raises the SBS threshold by a factor of 6.5, and find comparable suppression of SBS in similar fibers with a D-shaped cross-section

Knowledge Graph Building Blocks: An easy-to-use Framework for developing FAIREr Knowledge Graphs

Knowledge graphs and ontologies provide promising technical solutions for implementing the FAIR Principles for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable data and metadata. However, they also come with their own challenges. Nine such challenges are discussed and associated with the criterion of cognitive interoperability and specific FAIREr principles (FAIR + Explorability raised) that they fail to meet. We introduce an easy-to-use, open source knowledge graph framework that is based on knowledge graph building blocks (KGBBs). KGBBs are small information modules for knowledge-processing, each based on a specific type of semantic unit. By interrelating several KGBBs, one can specify a KGBB-driven FAIREr knowledge graph. Besides implementing semantic units, the KGBB Framework clearly distinguishes and decouples an internal in-memory data model from data storage, data display, and data access/export models. We argue that this decoupling is essential for solving many problems of knowledge management systems. We discuss the architecture of the KGBB Framework as we envision it, comprising (i) an openly accessible KGBB-Repository for different types of KGBBs, (ii) a KGBB-Engine for managing and operating FAIREr knowledge graphs (including automatic provenance tracking, editing changelog, and versioning of semantic units); (iii) a repository for KGBB-Functions; (iv) a low-code KGBB-Editor with which domain experts can create new KGBBs and specify their own FAIREr knowledge graph without having to think about semantic modelling. We conclude with discussing the nine challenges and how the KGBB Framework provides solutions for the issues they raise. While most of what we discuss here is entirely conceptual, we can point to two prototypes that demonstrate the principle feasibility of using semantic units and KGBBs to manage and structure knowledge graphs

A Design Science Research Approach to Smart and Collaborative Urban Supply Networks

    Get PDF
Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness. A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense. Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice

Mapping the Practice of Site Layout Planning in the Construction Industry

    Get PDF
Site Layout Planning (SLP) is a key activity for construction management and the overall success of construction projects. Past studies in this field have approached multiple techniques to solve SLP as a decision-making optimization problem. However, construction practitioners in the industry typically use intangible or subjective methods to plan the site layout, with the support of multiple tools that are not directly designed for planning construction sites. The mismatch between the available developments from research and actual methods approached in practice directed to the exploration of the practice of SLP conducted by practitioners to define the requirements needed in an SLP tool. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among forty-seven highly experienced construction practitioners who self-identified as fully responsible of SLP activities. Constructivist grounded theory and content analysis were used as the methodological basis to collect and analyze the data. From the analysis of 18635 transcript lines, 5028 codes were obtained, resulting in 190 labels, 60 categories, and 5 themes. The emergent themes describe the components of SLP as site characteristics, purpose, decision-making variables, tools and technology, and planning perspectives. The first part of the results details the practice of SLP, and the considerations and approaches taken by SLP practitioners when conducting a SLP, where the focus is to produce a functional site layout in the early stages of the project. The final part of the results presents the tools and functionalities that practitioners currently use to plan a site layout and highlights the need to integrate these functions and requirements into a single tool that can be practical for the construction industry. The requirements include resource properties and pairwise spatial relationships, planning documents and regulations, layout assessment metrics, and tool modules that facilitate addressing every stage of the planning as identified in the first part of the results. Finally, the aim of this study was to present a guideline for future developments in SLP to ensure their implementation in practical settings. This guideline was designed through the exploration of processes, needs, and requirements of the final users
