    This open access book tackles the design of 3D spatial interactions in an audio-centered and audio-first perspective, providing the fundamental notions related to the creation and evaluation of immersive sonic experiences.     Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool for Somatics and Somatic Psychology

    Many years ago when Somatics magazine was young, it occurred to me that it would be valuable to collect and publish research article references in Somatics magazine that were relevant to the different somatics disciplines to encourage the development of the field. There were next to no studies devoted to Somatics itself, but there were many studies devoted to the elements of somatic practices. Somatics is a multidisciplinary field. It builds on the research findings from many fields, such as anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, psychology, dance, biomechanics, and education. The references are selected to be suggestive to the interested researcher and practitioner for their purposes and of the many possible research avenues that are yet to be explored. I have collected these research references for more than four decades. I worked originally with Psychological Abstracts, then PsychInfo, and finally, PubMed. Over that time there has been more research done on the somatic disciplines themselves. The greatest amount of research has been done on yoga (the oldest and largest of the somatic disciplines) and yoga therapy. These studies are examples of the research that can be done with the other somatics disciplines as well. We are in an era that appreciates evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence. This is evidence. These research articles are selected according to the following criteria: The article combines both body and mind either in its research design or theoretical perspective; the research design incorporates convergent measures—that is, it includes physiological, behavioral, and psychological measures; subjective and objective measures; and the research focuses on the whole organism (human) from a somatic perspective—that is, the effect of a body therapy on a psychological state. Topics addressed include biofeedback, body psychotherapy, consciousness states, electrophysiology, kinesiology, mind and body, motor processes, neural basis of motor control, neuroscience, posture and emotion, psychophysiology, and yoga/yoga therapy

    The development of multisensory integration in autism spectrum disorders

    In order to understand and interact with the world, our brains must integrate information from multiple sensory modalities to create coherent representations of scenes and events. The integration of visual, tactile and proprioceptive inputs underpins the subjective sense of self and body ownership. This, in turn, underlies the development of social processes including self-awareness, imitation and empathising, which are impaired in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Evidence suggests that the social functioning deficits characterising ASD could contribute to atypical sensory integration underlying body representation. However, the exact mechanisms underlying sensory integration difficulties have not been specified. Moreover, it is not clear when, and how, visual, tactile and proprioceptive integration matures in typical development. This is important to establish, in order to compare how and why this integration may differ in ASD populations. This thesis firstly aimed to investigate the typical development of multisensory integration underlying body representation. Experiment One found that the ability to optimally integrate visual and proprioceptive inputs during hand localisation increases with age from very little integration in 4-year-olds to almost adult-like in typically developing 10- to 11-year-olds. Experiments Two and Three showed that sensitivity to the spatial constraints of visuo-proprioceptive integration, and sensitivity to the temporal constraints of visuo-tactile integration, develops with age in 4 to 11-year-olds. Together these studies suggest that the maturation of adult-like multisensory integration for body representation follows a protracted time course over childhood. The second aim of this thesis was to investigate the evidence for two prominent theories of atypical sensory integration underlying body representation in ASD. These are 1) an over-reliance on proprioception and 2) temporally extended sensory binding. Experiment Four examined whether trypically developing (TD) adults with a high number of autistic traits exhibit an over-reliance on proprioception. No evidence was found for this, which could indicate that atypical sensory integration is only present in individuals with a clinical diagnosis of ASD. Experiments Five and Six found evidence for temporally extended visuo-tactile integration in children with ASD, compared to TD control participants. Though no evidence was found for a fundamental over-reliance on proprioception, extended binding may have led to reduced processing of temporal synchrony over modality-specific information (i.e. proprioception). Experiment Seven and Eight found no evidence of proprioceptive over-reliance or temporally extended sensory binding in adults with ASD, relative to a TD control group. I conclude that children with ASD demonstrate temporally extended visuo-tactile binding. This represents a developmental delay rather than a life-long deficit; however, it could have a life-long impact on sensory sensitivities and social processing

Product design that provides aesthetic appeal, pleasure and satisfaction can greatly influence success of a product. Sound as a cognitive artifact, plays a significant role in the cognition of product interaction and in shaping its identity. This thesis will review emotion theories end their application to sound design and sound quality modeling, the measurement of emotional responses to sound, and the relationship between psycho-acoustical sound descriptions and emotions. In addition to that, affects of sounds to emotionally significant brands will be evaluated so as to examine marketing values. One of the main purposes of chapter 2 is to prove knowledge about psychoacoustics; as product sound quality is a basic understanding of the underlying psychoacoustics phenomena. Perception; particularly sound perception and its elements are described during chapter 2. Starting with the description of sound wave and how our hear works, sound perception and auditory sensation is reviewed in continuation. In chapter 3, product sound quality concept and its evaluation principles are reviewed. Thus, in order to understand the coupling between the acoustic perception and the product design; knowledge of general principles for product sound quality are required. Chapter 4 can be considered as two main sections. .How does emotion act as a delighter in product design?. is examined to better understand customer and user experiences impacting pleasure-ability in first section. In the second section, emotion is evaluated through sound design. A qualitative evaluation is done so as to examine cognition and emotion in sound perception. Chapter 5 leads subject through emotional branding. Sounds that carry the brand.s identity are evaluated within.
