KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN ORGANIZATION: MODELLING THE BARRIERS

    Get PDF
Knowledge sharing means the exchange of knowledge and share of experience among different organizational units. Knowledge sharing is about stimulating the exchange of experiences, ideas, and thoughts between people. The barriers which resist in the KS are known as knowledge Sharing Barriers (KSBs). The main aim of this paper is to understand mutual influence of KSBs using interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and to identify driving KSBs (KSBs that support other KSBs) and dependent KSBs (KSBs that are most influenced by others KSBs). It has been observed that KSBs ‘Lack of top management support and KM is not well understood’ has high driving power and low dependency

The evaluation of factors influencing knowledge sharing to improve supply chain performance in oil industry

Nowadays, knowledge sharing as a part of knowledge management process has determining role in organization development. Despite the growing importance of knowledge sharing for competitive organizations, the lack of proper understanding of its barriers and facilitators makes problematic knowledge sharing which is one of the most important goals of knowledge management by organizations. This study aims to evaluate the factors influencing knowledge sharing to improve supply chain performance in the oil industry. In this study, the opinions of 98 managers and experts of Oil Company were studied as sample. Then the structural equation modeling technique was used to analyze the data. The results showed that knowledge sharing has direct and significant relationship with competitive strategies of supply chain and competitive strategies of supply chain have the same relationship with supply chain performance

Enabling collaborative numerical modeling in earth sciences using knowledge infrastructure

Knowledge Infrastructure is an intellectual framework for creating, sharing, and distributing knowledge. In this paper, we use Knowledge Infrastructure to address common barriers to entry to numerical modeling in Earth sciences: computational modeling education, replicating published model results, and reusing published models to extend research. We outline six critical functional requirements: 1) workflows designed for new users; 2) a community-supported collaborative web platform; 3) distributed data storage; 4) a software environment; 5) a personalized cloud-based high-performance computing platform; and 6) a standardized open source modeling framework. Our methods meet these functional requirements by providing three interactive computational narratives for hands-on, problem-based research demonstrating how to use Landlab on HydroShare. Landlab is an open-source toolkit for building, coupling, and exploring two-dimensional numerical models. HydroShare is an online collaborative environment for the sharing of data and models. We describe the methods we are using to accelerate knowledge development by providing a suite of modular and interoperable process components that allows students, domain experts, collaborators, researchers, and sponsors to learn by exploring shared data and modeling resources. The system is designed to support uses on the continuum from fully-developed modeling applications to prototyping research software tools

A Causal Model to Predict Organizational Knowledge Sharing via Information and Communication Technologies

Knowledge management literature identifies numerous barriers that inhibit employees\u27 knowledge seeking and knowledge contributing practices via information and communication technologies (ICTs). Presently, there is a significant gap in the literature that explains what factors promote common knowledge sharing barriers. To bridge this gap, this study examined two research questions: 1) What are the potential factors that contribute to the commonly accepted barriers to knowledge sharing?, and 2) How do these factors impact employees\u27 use of ICTs for knowledge seeking and knowledge contributing? Literature review of 103 knowledge management articles identified three major barriers to knowledge sharing practices (lack of time, poor communication skills, and lack of trust) and three underlying factors that promoted these barriers (role conflict, role ambiguity, and locus of control). A six-stage content analysis study of the 103 knowledge articles identified 199 references to the observed contributors. To address the second research question, a causal knowledge sharing model was developed and seven hypotheses proposed. A survey consisting of 41 questions was distributed to 1,368 full-time analysts from a variety of industries, and 314 useful responses were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The results confirmed that role conflict, role ambiguity, and locus of control predicted knowledge seeking and knowledge contributing behaviors via ICTs. Moreover, type of ICTs used was found to moderate the strength of these predictors

Construction informatics in Turkey: strategic role of ICT and future research directions

Construction Informatics deals with subjects ranging from strategic management of ICTs to interoperability and information integration in the construction industry. Studies on defining research directions for Construction Informatics have a history over 20 years. The recent studies in the area highlight the priority themes for Construction Informatics research as interoperability, collaboration support, intelligent sites and knowledge sharing. In parallel, today it is widely accepted in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry that ICT is becoming a strategic asset for any organisation to deliver business improvement and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. However, traditionally the AEC industry has approached investing in ICT with a lack of strategic focus and low level of priority to the business. This paper presents a recent study from Turkey that is focused on two themes. The first theme investigates the strategic role of ICT implementations from an industrial perspective, and explores if organisations within the AEC industry view ICT as a strategic resource for their business practice. The second theme investigates the ‘perspective of academia’ in terms of future research directions of Construction Informatics. The results of the industrial study indicates that ICT is seen as a value-adding resource, but a shift towards the recognition of the importance of ICT in terms of value adding in winning work and achieving strategic competitive advantage is observed. On the other hand, ICT Training is found to be the theme of highest priority from the academia point of view

Knowledge Management and the Effectiveness of Innovation Outcomes: The Role of Cultural Barriers

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a conceptual model to test the moderating effect of cultural barriers on the link between knowledge strategies and innovation using healthcare organizations. In order to study the tie (knowledge-innovation) and the effects of the moderating variable (cultural barriers), the resource-based view is followed. It has been generally accepted that both explicit and tacit knowledge play a basic role in organizational innovation. However, there are few research works that study the relationship between knowledge management strategy and the effectiveness of the innovation process. On the other hand, the extant research on this relationship has yielded inconclusive results. Our paper revisits this research topic based on data of knowledge management strategy, Knowledge base, cultural barriers and innovation outcomes from a sample of Spanish hospitals
